One of the best Narratives ever read!
I loved the book from beginning to end. If you are looking for feelings, emotion, and real point of views of the slavery era this is the book for you. It is a short right to the point emotionally filled novel that always keeps you turning pages.

The best, most useful guide to therapeutic change in the whole wide world
I suspect Philip didn't actually read Maps of Narrative Practice, just glanced at the index. If he'd read it, he'd have found it to be a clear, precise, moving, warm, and effective tool kit for those therapists who are interested in further developing their skills. White has been developing these ideas over decades, but this is his first mainstream book, hence the references to his own works. ...

A left hand turn in therapy (for the better).
I was surprised to read the other negative reviews of this book. This book is, after all, the text which defined the philisophical underpinning of a new way of looking at expertise in therapy. Yes, much of the book, especially the discussion of Foucault's ideas, is hard going and at times requires a second or even third read. This is not a "how to" book. It is an invitation to a way of ...

Essential
"I expose slavery in this country, because to expose it is to kill it. Slavery is one of those monsters of darkness to whom the light of truth is death." Frederic Douglass Frederic Douglass tells us the REAL story about slavery in early America. From the first page to the last, I was totally transfixed. There are so many things to admire about this great American. On top of being ...

A Fascinating Way to Read the Bible
Modern Biblical scholarship has tended toward a process of atomization: how many editors were involved in the creation of the Bible? How many different strands of tradition can we find in a given story? Robert Alter's "The Art of Biblical Narrative" at once provides a corrective to this tendency, and a striking alternative way of understanding the Good Book. Although recent scholarship has ...

Reads like a novel
This book reads like a novel rather than like a textbook. The writing is charming and the content is fascinating. To whomever criticised the daunting size of the book, I say this: Use whatever you want. Students should learn to filter what they read and separate the essential from the trivial. This is a reference volume, not a capsule. I was amazed that one reviewer prefers a more tangible and ...

The honesty with which this is written is amazing. I was glued to it from page one. I felt disgusted by the human race, saddened by his traumas and guilty just for being white. I think this needs to be read more. Especially in schools. Why isn't it???

Review of the Berrybender series, vols 1-4. Overall rating 4.8 stars
This a quick minireview of the whole Berrybender series, now complete with the fourth volume -- it's really one long novel, and an omnibus edition can't be far behind. A *very* odd bunch of English aristos visit the American west in the 1830's and have adventures. A few of them even survive . This is McMurtry in antic farce mode, but with a base level of cruelty & violence that may squick ...
