Excellent Book on Arlington
Stunning pictures and moving text combine to give you an awe inspiring tour of probably the most revered area of the United States. Contents: Preface Essay History Final ...

Orbit14 reviews
Michael Helfert, Justin Wilkinson Jay Apt

National Geographic Society, 1996

High flyers!
Shuttle astronaut Jay Apt, together with scientists Michael Helfert and Justin Wilkinson, has put together a wonderful book of photographs under the auspices of National Geographic, Orbit. These are all photographs taken by astronauts from the space shuttle while in orbit (with a few exceptions, historically significant photographs from moon circlings and early trips into space). Photography, ...

Facing the Lion: Growing Up Maasai on the African Savanna35 reviews
Joseph Lemasolai-Lekuton

National Geographic Children's Books, 2003

Growing up as a Maasai warrior
I really liked this book. It is one of several that I purchased after coming back from Tanzania, and I have recommended it to others. The author is straight-forward about his situation, so I wouldn't recommend it to children under, say, 12, but it is quite moving as an adult book, though he wrote it for young people.

National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, Fourth Edition20 reviews
National Geographic Society

National Geographic, 2003

Great Introduction To The National Parks
This is an excellent book to use as a planning guide for trips to any of the National Parks in the US. I have been to many of the parks, and without exception the book's advice about how to get there, when to go, what to look for, etc., is excellent in every way. The book is filled with excellent color photography, and accompanying explanatory text with detailed entrance information that is ...

Bass Master Shaw Grigsby : Notes on Fishing and Life13 reviews
Shaw Grigsby

National Geographic, 1998

Small but Powerful
I give this book a 5, and I own a lot of fishing books. When I first purchased the book it seemed a bit small, would it be worth it? It was. In short chapters it discusses how to improve your fishing, tournament ethics, and family fishing. That's a lot of ground. Tired of all those birds nests in your spinning reel? Why not follow Shaw's advice and cast and tug your line gently. No more ...

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs: Official Companion Book to the Exhibition sponsored by ...22 reviews
Zahi Hawass

National Geographic, 2005

Very good book
I bought the book before seeing the tour in Philly. The book is very well done, and very good representation of the tour. Beautiful photographs, plus good rich text around the history of the 18th dynasty. Other reviews talk about the tour, which isn't really what the book is about. The tour was rather crowded, and I was somewhat disappointed that all the objects were small, and no Tut ...

Everest50 reviews
Broughton Coburn

National Geographic, 2003

Mt Everest: spectacular photography
I bought this book for the photography alone: this is as close as I am ever likely to get to the Himalayas. The photographs are spectacular, and I can see why so many people are challenged to want to make the journey to Base Camp if not further. Appearances can be deceptive: beautiful colour photographs portray a seemingly benevolent picture of Everest which is quite at odds with reality. ...

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Fifth Edition44 reviews
Jon L. Dunn, Jonathan Alderfer

National Geographic, 2006

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America--a review.
This book is first-rate. I tend to favor wildlife books that depict their subjects in paintings and drawings, rather than photos, and this book is rich in mini-masterpieces. I haven't yet gotten into bird-watching, but the book transcends those who use this as a field guide. Now I can sit in the comfort of my den and enjoy all the glory of Nature's bird treasures. Whether one likes to explore ...

This book has tremendous details about the Civil War. It actually takes you back to that time.

How We Crossed the West9 reviews
Rosalyn Schanzer

National Geographic Children's Books, 1997

A Great American Tale
The adventure and thrill of the Lewis & Clark Expedition is brought to life here in a story that both children and adults could appreciate. In beautiful and carefully rendered folk-style illustrations, and with descriptive text from the actual journals of the participants, the book has the appearance of something that almost could have been written in the early 1800's, when the expedition ...

Light at the Edge of the World: A Journey Through the Realm of Vanishing Cultures10 reviews
Wade Davis

National Geographic, 2002

Plants and people
Wade Davis' long career among isolated peoples and cultures has given him an enviable insight. He manages to connect with people at many levels. They are free and open with him, an obvious outsider. Their stories, legends, life modes all come to light under his gentle persuasive powers. In this outstanding account of his travels and his studies, we share much of what he and his mentors have ...

Silent World (NG Adventure Classics)9 reviews
Jacques Cousteau

National Geographic, 2004

How a showman/researcher/storyteller/philosopher defined modern diving
What can be said about Jacques Cousteau and his groundbreaking book that hasn't been said a thousand times? He is undoubtedly the defining figure of modern scuba diving, his books, films, and documentaries known to millions or billions. Even the name of his ship, the Calypso, is known the world over. It's a small volume, this book, just 160 pages, yet it's absolutely mandatory reading for anyone ...

The Midnight Ride Of Paul Revere12 reviews
Henry W. Longfellow

National Geographic Children's Books, 2000

What a treasure!
You know this book is special as soon as you touch it. You realize that the look of leather on the cover is just that, a look. You flip through the pages and find a scrapbook, complete with worn and mildewed pages, enhanced with token mementos that look so three-dimensional you must trace them with a tentative finger. A letter from Thomas Gage to Lieutenant Colonel Smith is tucked inside the ...

The Prometheus Project: Trapped (Richards, Douglas E. Prometheus Project)13 reviews
Douglas E. Richards

Dna Press, 2005

Trapped
The Resnick family has just moved to the most boring place on earth, Brewster, Pennsylvania. The kids, Ryan and Regan, can't figure out why their parents choose to take this job. Their parents had been offered plenty of great jobs all over the world and they'd always declined. Then, out of the blue, their parents suddenly tell them that they are moving to the middle of no where. What Ryan and ...

National Geographic Guide to America's Public Gardens (National Geographic Guide to)12 reviews
Mary Zuazua Jenkins

National Geographic, 1998

This is the best guide I've used and I've used many
I have visited hundreds of gardens on four continents and, at a national level, this guide is the most pleasing to the eye and has the best general descriptions of gardens and their histories that I have used. It is a powerful incentive to travel, and a most useful guide for finding the best public gardens on one's route.

National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe10 reviews
Roy A. Gallant

National Geographic Society, 1994

Jarringly beautiful
Besides my own copy, I have never seen another one of these books. It's a shame really, because this book combines information and illustration in the way only National Geographic can. The nine planets of our solar system make up the majority of text material here, which goes a long way in preserving the shelf life of this book. Our Universe begins with a brief history of astronomy entitled ...

Hunting With the Moon: The Lions of Savuti7 reviews
Dereck Joubert

National Geographic, 1997

A Book Every One Should Read.
This book is one of the best I have ever read.Extremely detailed and imformative, with excellent photography,I read it from cover to cover, every single word, without putting it down once! But then again, lions are my passion,so I suppose I'm slightly bias. For anyone even remotely interested in wildlife, this book is a must. No bookshelf is complete without it. Hunting With The Moon has some ...

National Geographic Satellite Atlas Of The World (National Geographic)7 reviews
National Geographic Society

National Geographic, 1998

My number one possession
The National Geographic Satellite Atlas of the World, is a must own for anyone with any amount of interest in geography. Satellite imagery itself is still relatively new, and so the imediate impact of these pictures on a viewer is overwhelming. To look at these images and realize that this one of the many views from space is mystifying. But thats not the only reason to look at these pictures. ...
