A GRIPPING TALE
I have been looking forward to reading this book by Mary Lightfine ever since I learned that it was in progress. I received my copy this past week. Setting aside another book in which I was involved, NURSES, NOMADS AND WARLORDS caught my attention, my imagination and my respect from the very first. It is a very good read on a most basic level. On a more elevated level the stories of Mary's ...

At last an answer to 'are we doing the right thing?' in relocating with children
Perhaps no life decision is so wrought with uncertainty and apprehension as the one to relocate your children overseas, whether temporarily for an overseas assignment, sabbatical or extended world travel or permanently as emigrants. Will we be damaging them? Will they hate us? Will they suffer academically, personally, emotionally, physically? These are big questions, and before Robin Pascoe's ...

One of my favorite books EVER
I read a lot. And the Gor series stands out. Great, great, great. If you like fantasy, it is obligatory to read the first five. Nomads and Assassins are the best. You can get reading copy sets off Ebay of these five for $25. I cannot imagine $25 better spent. If you have not done so, go for it, you'll not be disappointed. Raiders(6) is also good and has scenes that'll be with you for a long ...

Really enjoyed this Book
Especially for those who are thinking of travelling alone or following a dream, this author encourages us with her adventures. I enjoyed his story and her guts to begin something new at an age when it's easy to get stuck!

another "thumbs-up" vote
Having just scrolled through the other reviews, I don't have anything to add except the comment that I am another fan of this book. I think the author did a good job of bringing this complex, interesting woman to life.

Simply put, an excellent guidebook
To be honest, I clumsily purchased this guidebook. When I went to cancel my order the next day the book had already been shipped. I'm glad I decided not to continue further with my cancellation. Doublejump is a fine publisher and spares little details. Upon receiving my item two days later, browsing through the pages, my expectations of a quality product had been met. I can't stress enough ...

Songs for a Teenage Nomad has a melody for every reader
Calle Smith is a teenager that you've seen standing outside of a high school, or sitting on rocks at the beach. Lucky for us, Kim Culbertson gives us the privilege of knowing Calle, who has been forced to wander through her childhood, moving constantly, never really feeling a part of a community, or a school, or a group of friends. Music lyrics link the chapters to memory and place, the magic ...

Best Practical Planning Book For Long-Term Travel
I am planning a year-long, around-the-world trip, and The Practical Nomad is by far the most useful of the many books I have read. The book is not for casual readers who are looking for the next A Year in Provence. The book is dense and fact-filled, a result of the author's twenty years of experience as a round-the-world travel consultant. The section on airline ticket pricing is as ...

I Enjoyed This Book
I picked this book up at a Waterstone's in Sheffield, under its U.K. title of Ghost Riders, and it brought me back to my hitch-hiking days in America. Grant, a Brit., gets "travel fever" and lights out on the same open road that Whitman, Twain, Jack London, Steinbeck, Kerouac, and scores of others celebrate in American lit. and popular culture. Grant gives us an up-dated version of what the ...

Review of Nomads of the Eurasian Steppes
The scope of the Nomads volume is astonishing - the Eurasian steppes from Eastern Europe through Central Asia and to Mongolia, with a millennial time frame that encompasses components of the Late Bronze and the whole of the Early Iron Ages. The anthology's 10 authors, all of whom are recognized specialists on steppe nomad prehistory, synthesize Soviet research undertaken between 1960 and 1990. ...

This is the thrilling story of a Kurdish doctor, his acceptance as a mullah and teacher of his people, his struggles in turning from Islam to Christianity, his resulting banishment and persecution, and his faithfulness and service to his Lord. All this adds up to a fabulous tale, more absorbing than fiction or a mystery, yet all of it is true. Not in many years has such a moving narrative come out of the Middle East. This story of the highest ...

A really great book!
If I made a list of books everyone should read, this one would right now be number one. Everything that has happened in the last 10,11 years since the breakup of the Soviet Union, is in here- East Germany, Liberia, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia- each story told in the context of the lives of one or a few people, which makes these stories so vivid and real. You'll remember the newspaper headlines, and ...

a sharp but limited ethnography
NOMADS OF SOUTH PERSIA was written in the 1950s when the (nearly always male) researchers tried to conform to a perceived scientific norm. At the time, Barth wrote a book for specialists, not for general readers and his work has become a minor classic in the field. However, anthropology has gone through many a twist and turn since then. It is doubtful if many anthropologists want to read the ...

An amazing life, a one-of-a-kind diary
The unusual life and bizarre death of Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904) remains a mystery. Dressing as a man, she traveled through Saharan Africa and drowned -- in the desert -- at age 27, which only emphasizes the uniqueness of the written record she left behind. Unlike the works of other desert adventurers such as Sir Richard Burton and T. E. Lawrence, Eberhardt's diary never clarifies why she ...

One of the Best of the Best
I love Moorcock's Eternal Champion cycle. I love the way it weaves an entire universe where characters can come and go out of each other's stories at any time. Two years after reading Nomad of the Time Streams, it's still my most memorable volume in the core cycle. Moorcock's vision of alternate histories where airships rule the skies and monorails cross the land manages to portray Utopia and ...
