American Negro Slavery (Large Print Edition): A Survey of the Supply, Employment and Control of Negro Labor ...1 review
Ulrich Bonnell Phillips

BiblioBazaar, 2006

One of the most "fair" books I have seen written on the subject.
The book was well written and took the "road less traveled" in that it presented some of the facts that many people prefer to ignore. Such as how in a good many respects slavery was an easier life than the life of a "wage slave". The book was not always the most exciting book, there were some chapters that I barely made it through. This book was worth the read and worth keeping in my library as ...

1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving5 reviews
Catherine O'Neill Grace, Sisse Brimberg, ...

National Geographic Children's Books, 2001

An exquisite book
This is a beautifully written and exquisitely photographed book about the first Thanksgiving celebration in 1621 (according to the Western calendar). The photos were taken during re-enactments at Plimoth Plantation, and are historically accurate as well as lovely to look at. The text gives the Wampanoag perspective on the event with sensitivity and vibrancy. All in a book that is clearly ...

William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!: A Casebook (Casebooks in Criticism)1 review

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Very good if you like this sort of thing...
I told my duaghter that I finished a great book, "Absalom, Absalom", and that now I was going to read a book ABOUT that book. She gave me a look, as if she never heard of anything so strange. For literary scholars and the academic community, I'm sure this line of thinking is naive, but for many readers, a book of critcal analysis is just wierd, nerdy, or painfully boring. Well, I like ...

Carolina Plantations: Lost Photographs from the Historic American Buildings Survey

The History Press, 2007

Today perhaps only a hundred along the coast and another hundred inland remain. Many of the great plantation homes were lost during the time of war, and many more were simply allowed to collapse in the aftermath. This collection of photographs represents some of the most stunning work present in the Historic American Buildings Survey, an effort to catalogue and document the architecture and building culture of America. In the South, ...
