The PMP Exam: How to Pass On Your First Try (Test Prep series)172 reviews
PMP, Andy Crowe

Velociteach, 2005

The BEST Single Book Out There!
I passed the PMP exam on my first try thanks largely to this book. It's clear, concise and well-organized. It has some great tables and grids that make for easy memorization. I found Rita Mulcahy's book much too conversational, and I found Paul Sanghera's book too technical. In my opinion, if you purchase this one book along with PMI's PMBOK Guide, you'll do fine on the exam!

Cold Sassy Tree216 reviews
Olive Ann Burns

Mariner Books, 2007

Great stand-alone novel...
This novel is perfect in every way all on it's own. That said, there is a follow up "mostly" written by Burns titled Leaving Cold Sassy... don't go for that one. But, this one is a keeper. I was assigned this book in high school (quite a while ago) and it was one of the 1st novels that started my whole love-affair with books. I also recommend Louis L'Amour Last of the Breed (not a western, ...

Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science146 reviews
Atul Gawande

Picador, 2003

Humble Human makes a Great Doctor!
An amazing thriller... Dr.Atul's superb portrayal of finest qualities of a doctor, yet the limitations of an individual, their weekness, strengths, system flaws etc with vivid examples of real life cases makes "Complications" the best medical book I'v ever read. It's not the content of the book alone that deserves appreciation, it's also the flow of words that blend with the topic. Certainly ...

Learning from the Heart: Lessons on Living, Loving, and Listening7 reviews
Daniel Gottlieb

Sterling, 2008

What Does it Mean to be Human?
Daniel Gottlieb is one of the most compassionate souls I have ever "met." A trained psychologist, Gottlieb was in an accident in 1979 when he was 33 years old and was rendered a quadriplegic. Shortly following his accident, he "began to wonder what it really meant to be human." What follows are stories and what he learns about himself, friends, family and patients. Gottlieb began to ...

Wrap, Stitch, Fold & Rivet: Making Designer Metal Jewelry (Lark Jewelry Book)6 reviews
Mary Hettmansperger

Lark Books, 2008

Pleasantly Surprised
Upon seeing this book and the two completely opposing reviews I was in two minds about purchasing,I am quiet happy that I did. Again, it shows that reviews are highly emotive and personal. I certainly do not beleive this is the "worst jewelry book ever" as W. Swift states. She/He seems to think that being a "fiber person" is badge of shame? I see this as being one of the wonderful talents that ...

A laugh out loud book
This is a very funny, easy to read book which will ring true to any parent or grandparent. I laughed out loud the whole time I read it. And yes, being a grandparent is the best job in the world.

Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance71 reviews
Atul Gawande

Picador, 2008

"When the stakes are our lives...we want no one to settle for average."
Atul Gawande, in "Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance," asks, "What does it take to be good at something in which failure is so easy?" When someone's well-being is at stake, is mere competence enough? The author maintains that a great deal more is needed "to enable every human being to lead a life as long and free of frailty as science will allow." With so much on the line, knowledge is ...

Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription: Notes and Asides from National ReviewPM13 reviews
William Buckley

Basic Books, 2007

Entertaining, personal, and worth returning to
With the publication of the wonderful Florence King's "STET, Damnit!" in 2003 and WFB's "Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription" in 2007, National Review books are breaking new ground in the use of profanity in titles. Which is not a field in which I would have expected them to show such leadership. But since we have Buckley's own assurance in these pages (page 33, to be precise) that "goddam," as ...

Heart of Darkness (Norton Critical Editions)11 reviews
Joseph Conrad

W. W. Norton, 2005

"Mistah Kurtz--he dead." An influential work on five 20th century seminal works
I read this book for a graduate Humanities course. Buy this edition, it is the best with great critical essays. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, written in 1899 is a seminal work about the ills of colonialism, as well as a postmodern look at the subject of mankind. Conrad's book had a crucial influence on five important works of the twentieth century: J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. ...

Notes from a Small Island272 reviews
Bill Bryson

Harper Perennial, 1997

I wet myself reading this one
Ok, may that was a little lie, but "Notes from a Small Island" was that good. I laughed out loud so many times I cried. He hits the countries mannerisms spot on. Having lived in the UK for many years I enjoyed all of his rants and raves. Sure, some of them may have been a little preachy or exagerated, but the point was to show the differences and he came through with flying colors (or should I ...

I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away220 reviews
Bill Bryson

Broadway, 2000

a hilarious account on coming back to the native land
With "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" Bill Bryson proved to me that I was wrong thinking that "A Walk in the Woods" was unsurpassable. This collection of essays about the United States of America and the lifestyle and often puzzling habits of its inhabitants is a true gem. Now, I might be biased, because I found a lot of my own experience as a foreigner living in America very similar and therefore ...

Entrepreneur's Notebook: Practical Advice for Starting a New Business Venture16 reviews
Steven K. Gold

Learning Ventures Press, 2006

Practical, Hands-On Guide for Novice--or Seasoned--Entrepreneurs
Gold goes far beyond the typical "here's the difference between a C Corporation and an LLC" to explain not only the nuts-and-bolts of finding business partners, forming a company, marketing your products/services, and writing a business plan, but also--and perhaps even more importantly--how to *think about* being an entrepreneur and how to make the critical decisions that can make or break any ...

To Kill a Mockingbird (Cliffs Notes)5 reviews
Cliffs, Tamara Castleman

Cliffs Notes, 2000

Great!
We had to read this book for school, and i was NOT looking forward to it. The class from last year had nothing but bad things to say about it. So I decided I would read a little bit just to keep up in our class discussions. Let me tell you, I was hooked! I couldn't put it down! To Kill a Mockingbird is the best book I have ever read!!

Crazy About Cupcakes16 reviews
Krystina Castella

Sterling, 2006

A fun book!
I am on a cupcake kick right now; I love making them for my kids' schools, and for my family and friends. This book has so many great recipes it was hard to pick which one to make first. But I opted for the Pina Colada cupcakes, and they were absolutely delicious. This is the first time I made cupcakes from scratch, and it's a huge difference in taste and texture. I highly recommend this ...

Math Review For Standardized Tests (Cliffs Test Prep)36 reviews
Jerry, Ph.D. Bobrow

Cliffs Notes, 1985

An absolute must if you are preparing for the GRE yourself
This book is the first that I have encountered that can actually TEACH me math. All of the others that have tried have just gave me a headache. It starts with the most basic concepts and works its way into the more complex. If you are preparing for the GRE or SAT yourself, this book is worth way more than what you'll pay for it on Amazon. Without it, I would have been completely, utterly, ...

Margaret George

St. Martin's Griffin, 1998

A Longtime Favorite!!!
I have owned this book since I was a teenager and I have loved it for a very long time. It is one of those that I read over again. I highly recommend it. You will not regret reading this book.
