A Great Historical Piece
Variations exist within populations that compete for scarce resources needed for survival, and many of these variations not only affect the ability of the individual to compete, but also can be passed onto children. Those variations better suited for competition will be passed on at a higher rate than those that are less suited for competition due to higher rates of survival. In this way, nature ...

more fantastic & thought-provoking than science fiction
I picked up this book in a bookstore with skepticism--it seemed more like a product from National Enquirer than a work of real science--WEIRD PROTO-HUMANS WALKED THE EARTH, LEFT BEHIND BONES! I was so unaware of the range & diversity of early human types before buying this book; now I treasure it, and use it as a touch-point as I wade deeper into reading about the origins of our species.

No better way to experience this
Okay I am a bit embarrassed; how have I gotten to this age without having read this vital book? Well, I am a bit behind on my reading (the stack of books waiting to be read looks almost big enough to ski down), so when I saw this audiobook version of Darwin's classic, I could not resist. The original text (with original title, by the way: the word "On" later being dropped by Darwin), abridged and ...

So Simple a Beginning, So Profound a Journey
I have had two worn-out paperback copies of Origin of Species and The Voyage of the Beagle for many years and enjoyed them greatly. But, my eyes are not quite as good as they used to be at reading small print, and besides I wanted nicer copies after all this time. I had never gotten around to The Descent of Man and The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, which I wanted to read in ...

most powerful book I have ever read
When I read this book, I felt it made so much sense. So much more sense than the rubbish we have been taught is our history. All of the pieces fit together much more logically. I could not put this book down, it is the most powerful book I have ever read and I highly recommend it to those who seek the truth, or the best version of the truth we currently have. The proof is in the stones and our ...

Need to know for cultural literacy
Because these reviews are cross-posted this is a review of ISBN: 0517123207, with a cover that was defiantly made to be provocative. It depicts an (ape) allying view of going from all fours to upright. If this is what you are looking for then you need to read " 2001: A Space Odyssey" by Arthur Charles Clarke. This is a quick review of the book not a dissertation on Darwin or any other subject ...

Excellent introduction to the science of evolution
I could not put this book down. I devoured all but the last two chapters (biochemistry). Get it, read it, free your mind the way these remarkable men did. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Charles Walcott.

Beautiful!
This book is absolutely beautiful. Even if you disregard the actual text itself - which one would be a fool to do - the quality of this book is awesome. Strong binding, pleasant typeface, two-column layout, plenty of margin space, text-book quality pages, and of course the abundance of images. This is a book worth keeping on your shelf. The only caveat is that it is large and heavy, making it not ...

Book report: The Origin of Species, by Charles Darwin
When it comes to subjects like biology and medicine, I am an absolute moron. I only barely avoided failing the one and only biology class I ever took, thanks to an absurd amount of extra-credit outside reading assignments and a science fair project that I still don't understand. I can never remember if DNA is made out of chromosomes or the other way around. Same with proteins and amino acids. I'm ...

Very enjoyable graphic novel. Well written summary of Origin, with the added impact of well drawn 19th century period style images. This book is also a great companion piece to the DVD "Creation", a dramatization of Darwin's thought process as he was contemplating Origin.

The "Origin" Made Far More Accesible For Ordinary Readers
It's both wonderful and too bad that there are now two such excellent versions of "On the Origin of Species" competing for non-specialist readers: this one and the lavishly-illustrated version edited by David Quammen (which see). Professor James T. Costa, who edited this book and prepared the excellent annotations, is a biologist himself and an insightful student of Darwin. This very useful ...

For Favoured Races Only
The shockwaves from the publication of this book still resound today. The full title of the book is "On the Origin of Species By Means Of Natural Selection or Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" by Charles Darwin and it was first published on November 24th of 1859. The importance of the work was not in the originality of the idea; the idea of evolution had been a theory ...

Darwin translated for the People
If you've ever started reading Darwin but got bogged down, or if you're thinking, "I want to know what Darwin said." - then read this book. Don't be put-off by the academic publisher. The book is an easy read. The Origin is a great book, and Reznick hasn't screwed it up. Everything in The Origin that still resonates with biologists and geologists today is preserved, and there are updates that ...

Unexpectedly Enjoyable Read
This text, the subject of so much political and social controversy in the U.S., is actually just a nice read. First, and in surprising contradiction to all the God versus science panic, he presumes an "act of creation," which to me, implies that his theory is based on the idea of a Creator. Here are a few quotes from Chapter Two in which he discusses acts of creation: ...

Before Sagan and Dawkins, there was Charles Robert Darwin
Charles Darwin found his voice in this book. For all his tangled sentence structure and use of the passive voice, in the "Origin" his is a voice as one crying in the wilderness: a voice which desperately desires to be understood. While it is true that Darwin largely developed his theory within a vacuum, (Thomas Henry Huxley and Charles Lyell, and later, of course, Alfred Russell Wallace, among ...

How to Worship Charles Darwin
This edition of the Origin is a rare item: a book for the classroom that actually does the job. It contains a bibliography, explanatory notes, a chronology of Darwin's life, and a register of names. The appendices contain selections from Darwin's other works and selections from Darwin's sources and contemporaries. All for $9.95! In addition to these nuts and bolts, the editor has composed an ...

Most helpful book in the entire field
This is one of the only books in the emotionally charged field of creation-evolution that is fair to everyone. Most books in this field, like those of Richard Dawkins or Phillip Johnson, are nothing more than one-sided arguments for a particular viewpoint. The authors of this book have taken the time to read literally everybody and they summarize a vast sprectrum of ideas with clarity and ...
