Great story! Unique and thought provoking concept.
Loved it! The concept of this book is very interesting and original. I really, really enjoyed the premise, the characters (especially Bub), and the gore. :) It's not as gory as Jack Kilborn's Afraid (JA Konrath's pen name) but it's definitely a bit horrific at times. It's fast paced and thought provoking and I read it in a day. It's also a little bit of a genre crosser with elements of ...

A must-have for any Kindle reader
Can't help but notice that the Bible is one of the top downloads in the Kindle Store. Actually, I'm a bit perplexed that Darwin's "Origin of the Species", which IMHO, is the Bible's touchstone naturalist complement, is not garnering as much attention and that this is the first review. As we celebrate Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the publication of this book, I'm ...

An accessable, balanced, insightful look
This diligently researched and superbly written book acts as an easy to digest key, actively bent on unlocking the history of Islam. Aslan, an Iranian-born author, brings a viewpoint often missing from Western understandings of the Islamic religion. Aslan tackles often thorny and complex historical occurrences and theological viewpoints, translating them into an understandable and synthesized ...

Terrific on all counts
Another great offering from my favorite grammar maven, once again teaming up with her husband Stewart. The writing, as one expects from this duo, proceeds apace with wit and insight, dispelling a myth here and granting permission there. I was so relieved to know that I can split my infinitives at will and end my sentences with a preposition - and that I am in superbly historic linguistic company ...

A great read.
I love to read about history but so many history books read like they were written by some curmudgeonly old scholarly who has no idea how to make anything interesting. This book is great. It has enough detail to please the most scholarly of readers, while at the same time its an enjoyable and easy read for the average Joe. I only wish more historians would learn to write books that read like a ...

A major step forward
This is a very important book--important in its own right, but also important as a marker for significant change in the academic study of the humanities. For a generation or more, the humanities have resisted the developments which have occurred in the departments that surround them. Sociobiology, evolutionary psychology, cognitive science--a panoply of subjects that build upon the advanced ...

The truth about nutrition
John Robbins is sincere to the core. His book is very readable, though filled with fact after fact about nutrition, factory farming, and saving our planet. His style is homey and very believable. The story about the pig farmer is riveting. I highly reccommend it to anyone who cares about what he eats and who cares about our planetary home. I have already given it as a gift twice.

You know what's an interesting fiction?
You know what's an even more interesting fiction? The Bible. I look at reviews to know about the quality of the product, not the ignorance of people. Please don't come here and give a bad review to this well-crafted presentation of a great book because you're so insecure, you call evolution a fictionalized story. I find it hilarious that people who point out the "lack of evidence" for evolution ...

Opened My Eyes
I had just finished reading Michael Dyson's "Is Bill Cosby Right?". Then I read this book of Sowell's. African Americans, including myself, have rejected Sowell out of hand because he does not line up with the orthodoxy of Dyson or the typical civil rights perspective. This is because I did not realize how thoroughly Sowell understands the issues and the philosophies behind it and the opposite ...

XXXXX "When on board the H.M.S. `Beagle,' as naturalist, I was struck with certain facts in the distribution of the inhabitants [or plants and animals] of South America, and the geologic relations of the present to past inhabitants of that continent. These facts seemed to me to throw some light on the origin of species--that mystery of mysteries, as it has been called by one of our greatest ...

A different perspective
Perhaps I don't agree with everything the author says in the book, but it is written well, easy to understand, and offers a different perspective from what we often hear on TV or read in the newspapers. At a minimum, it makes one think about various issues that affect all of our lives, and for that I give it 5 stars.

This book should be read by anyone with an interest in human evolution but especially by those with an interest in human uniqueness. Dr. Hrdy writes beautifully, is vigorous in her attention to empirical evidence, but she is also willing to speculate about the conditions that fostered uniquely human traits. Among the most obvious of these traits are our extended lifespans, prolonged childhoods, ...

The "Origin" with Modern and Historical Insights
It's both wonderful and too bad that there are now two such excellent versions of "On the Origin of Species" competing for non-specialist readers: this one and the lavishly-illustrated version edited by David Quammen (which see). Professor Costa is a biologist himself and an insightful student of Darwin. This very useful book presents a facsimile of the first edition of Darwin's classic volume ...
