Joseph and His Brothers 19 reviews Thomas Mann
Secker & Warburg, 1970
Challenging and Sublime For all the great technological magic of our age we suffer the misfortune of living in a time where the depth of hyperbole rends the edge from language leaving us bereft when the time comes to describe something truly remarkable. Thus to say that John Woods' translation of Thomas Mann's Joseph and His Brothers offers readers a gift of almost indescribable value may leave one wondering if I am ...

Every day should be Saturday When I was nine years old I picked up a copy of Elizabeth Enright's "The Melendy Family" on sale for 25 cents at my school Christmas fair, donated by some eighth-grader who evidently felt she had "outgrown" it. I wonder, does anybody ever outgrow the Melendys? "The Melendy Family" was a three-in-one volume comprising "The Saturdays", "The Four Story Mistake", and "Then There were Five". Alas, ...

Wolfproof 8 reviews Maureen Doyle McQuerry
Idylls Press, 2006
Absolutely Loved It! It is rare to come across a fantasy novel with such an original style as well as a compelling story. Maureen McQuerry's background in poetry clearly comes out in this novel as her attention to word choice leaves you with a great aftertaste. Wolfproof has very real characters that are easy to identify with, a gripping plot, and some clever insights into British and Celtic mythology. If you liked ...

Crossroad General Interest, 2002
powerful! This is one of those books that can cause a dramatic change in perspective for some people; you will never view a mentally and physically challenged person in the same way again. It confirms the wisdom that God has a purpose for us all, and is written with great tenderness and intelligence by Mr. DeVinck.

One of the best things you can shove into your tape player If you are new to Car Talk, this tape is a neccessity. Even if you have been listening for years, you may not have heard some of these calls. And if you never have listened to Car Talk, shame on you! The Star People: A Lakota Story 4 reviews S. D. Nelson
Harry N. Abrams, 2003
Mother Earth and Father Sky. S.D. Nelson shares the wonder of the prairie and the Native American peoples. The importance of family is the heart of this story. The grandmother guides her grandchildren home when they are lost. The children learn that they are part of their family, the earth and the sky. The art work is outstanding and I look forward to more books by S.D. Nelson. Gift Horse is another of his excellent books.

The Master of Ballantrae (The World's Classics) 5 reviews Robert Louis Stevenson
Oxford University Press, USA, 1983
Quite simply the best book I have ever read I have always liked everything written by Stevenson, but The Master of Ballantrae far outstrips everything else. It is a subtle insight into human nature, and a great adventure story as well. The episodes are majestic, and the story, though bleak, is very touching. I have read it many, many times and think more of it the more I read it (to paraphrase Mackellar on page 1).
