Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death74 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Jossey-Bass, 2008

Yalom has gifted us with another fine book. And for a remarkably candid book by another brilliant psychiatrist
I recommend That's How the Light Gets In: Memoir of a Psychiatrist by Susan Rako, M.D. The title comes from a song by Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." Rako's book is fascinating, insightful, and wonderfully well-written. The writing just flows.

What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming OCD (What-to-Do Guides for Kids)8 reviews
Dawn Huebner

Magination Press, 2007

Well worth the price!
This has been a great book for my 13 year old son, who has OCD, along with autism. There is a very helpful analogy comparing dealing with obsessive thoughts with entering a movie theater--just like sometimes at first the theater's air conditioning is too cold or the sound is too loud, after a while, we get used to it. In the same way, if the child waits out the anxious thought, it too will go ...

10 Days to a Less Defiant Child: The Breakthrough Program for Overcoming Your Child's Difficult Behavior33 reviews
Jeffrey Bernstein

Da Capo Press, 2006

Terrific!
Being the parents of a 14 year old girl heading to high school and an 11 year old ADHD/ODD boy about to start middle school, we need all the help we can get. We fear that our son's ODD will eventually morph into conduct disorder and are willing to try anything to save him (and us) from that. Also, we have been feeling the pain of a defiance issue forming with our daughter as she enters her ...

Patrick M. Lencioni

Jossey-Bass, 2005

Easy to use and very helpful
This field guide is extremely useful for working with teams - from dysfunctional teams to those that are running smoothly. The exercises are practical and get to the heart of team dysfunctions. I am a pastor who also works in the corporate world. I will use the ideas and exercises in this book with teams in the office and in the church.

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life116 reviews
Susan Forward, Craig Buck

Bantam, 2002

This book enabled me to finally cut the umbilical cord
All my life, I've been told by therapists, friends, lovers, my siblings, even my father how unhealthy my relationship with my mother was. I felt this intense obligation to her to the point that it was getting in the way of my life. Guilt followed me around like a dark cloud. I had blocked out large chunks of my childhood not understanding why but just accepting it. After my father passed away, ...

The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play90 reviews
Neil Fiore

Tarcher, 2007

The "unschedule" is the best day planner ever
Please stop beating yourself up long enough to read this book. I have gotten more done on languishing projects in less time and had much more fun in my life since applying the "Unschedule" instead of my former process that began with an impossible to-do list followed by a day of procrastination and an evening of regret and guilt (sound like fun?). This is a new way of thinking about planning your ...

What to Do When Your Temper Flares: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Problems With Anger (What to Do Guides for ...5 reviews
Dawn Huebner

Magination Press, 2007

timely and helpful
Of all of Dawn Huebner's books, I like this one the best! As a therapist this book provides a multi-sensory approach with lots of options and choices that the kids can make in learning to control their anger. I had one child this week really get into the relaxation techniques, and I love the "vacuum cleaner" concept of not getting "sucked in" to anger.

What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety (What to Do Guides for Kids)30 reviews
Dawn Huebner

Magination Press, 2005

Can't say enough!!!
If you are a parent of a child with anxiety, you know how it can feel like your family is held hostage by your child's worries! This book saved our family! It was recommended by our child's therapist and I just can't say enough about it. It is written for kids to understand, but it is not condescending so even an older child or teen would benefit from it. Several specific strategies are ...

Sally Md Shaywitz

Vintage, 2005

Overcoming Dyslexia - a text that is relevant to practioners.
This book had been recommended reading for me and now I am recommending it to parents of my students. After dealing with the products of whole language teaching, parents of dyslexic students are desperate for an approach to teaching reading that is more in line with the needs of students. This book outlines such an approach - and gives reasons/ supporting evidence for why this approach to ...

Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment40 reviews
Tal Ben-Shahar

McGraw-Hill, 2007

A 5-Star Read
I have read Daniel Gilbert's `Stumbling on Happiness' and Sonja Lyubomirsky's `The How of Happiness.' Of them all, Happier is by far the best book in the area of positive psychology because it provides practical exercises and information that will really allow you to achieve happiness and view life in a different way. Happier is extremely readable because it isn't filled with statistics, ...

Overcoming Obsessive Thoughts: How to Gain Control of Your OCD6 reviews
Christine, Ph.D. Purdon, David A. Clark

New Harbinger Publications, 2005

The best OCD book I have ever read next to Brain Lock
One of the most powerful attributes of this book is the idea that in order for one to overcome obsessive thoughts one must actually avoid using mental coping mechanisms. Its ironic that the remedy and even cure is often contingent upon an individuals willingness to go in the opposite direction of his thoughts. I am a current graduate student and CPA who has been struggling with OCD just about ...

Love Busters: Overcoming Habits That Destroy Romantic Love16 reviews
Willard F.Jr. Harley

Revell, 2002

Our Marriage Isn't Falling Apart...
After 8yrs of dating and 4yrs of marriage, our relationship had become...well, boring. Our date nights, if we had them, were typical dinner and a movie. Something was definitely missing. A church marriage counsellor recommended this book along with The 5 Love Languages. It is a must read for BOTH spouses. Do not expect results with only one partner reading and/or applying it!

Changing for Good: A Revolutionary Six-Stage Program for Overcoming Bad Habits and Moving Your Life ...30 reviews
James O. Prochaska, John Norcross, ...

Collins, 1995

What a nice change!
Unlike most self-help books out there, this one is actually based on research for a change. Based on this Phd's work on how people change, this guy has uncovered the different, predictable stages of change that people go through when they attempt to get themselves to change. Although the stages are fairly predictable, not everybody goes through them in the exact same order as some people skip ...

What to Do When You Grumble Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Negativity (What to Do Guides for Kids)5 reviews
Dawn Huebner

Magination Press, 2006

Engaging for Young Readers
This book tackles an unusual and important topic for children- negativity. In a fun and very child-friendly format, the author uses metaphors, stories, and examples to explain to children what negativity is and how they can transform their negative thinking into more positive thinking. The learning is reinforced by fun activities and art experiences. As a mother and social worker, I strongly ...

Mary Beth Williams, Soili Poijula

Best PTSD workbook for childhhod abuse.
I have reviewed a number of workbooks on PTSD. This was the best of many for the subject of childhood sexual abuse trauma. Best when used with a therapist to help guide the progression of the work. Each chapter full of simple, effective exercises ...

The Bondage BreakerŪ: Overcoming *Negative Thoughts *Irrational Feelings *Habitual Sins11 reviews
Neil T. Anderson

Harvest House Publishers, 2006

Incredible resource for healing
The Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson is a tough book for Christians. Many don't want to acknowledge the active spirit world or Satan or demons as real forces within it, because it seems illogical. Christianity has enough of a fight in today's culture without adding possession and spirit caused illnesses. I've been lukewarm about the issue in the past, but when I got the book, I decided to give ...

This book saved my life
This book is wonderful. It has enabled me to resume my life without pain. I have recomended it to several friends and relatives so they can treat themselves. I only wish I had found it years ago. Prior to treating my self with the information contained in this little gem, I was constantly awakened by shoulder pain in the middle of the night, was afraid to drive because just reaching for the ...
