Lyra's Oxford (Pullman, Philip, His Dark Materials.)88 reviews
Philip Pullman

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2003

Really charming after "His Dark Materials"
After seeing "The Golden Compass," I had to read the trilogy "His Dark Materials." It was a thrilling fantasy that left me thirsting for more, but--guess what?--that is all there is right now. But there was this little jewel of a book. It really is just a short story/chapter and a charming map of Oxford, but it was what I needed to decompress and wait patiently for "The Book of Dust."

A Researcher's Best Friend
The third edition of Thomas Mann's "Oxford Guide to Library Research" is an indispensable friend for students and scholars, or anyone in the general public who has a hobby, a pet project or just the desire to know, and wants not only to improve their research skills but to learn - and take full advantage of - all the resources available to the library researcher in the Computer Age. The New Oxford American Dictionary31 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

Excellent !
Buying a dictionary is for me about getting enough words versus the size and weight of the book . With that in mind I find that I need a dictionary that has 250,000 words which this one has and with that comes a large heavy book . There just is no way to resolve this conflict . My only complaint is the photos of movie stars and presidents throughout. Why is this in there ? It will easily make the ...

Norma Shapiro, Jayme Adelson- Goldstein

The Language Bible!
I have been teaching French, Spanish and ESL for many years. I have tried every teaching tool I could find. I can honestly say, this book is the best language tool ever! My students take this book with them everywhere they go and they are the ones who started calling this their "bible."

The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha, Augmented Third Edition, College Edition, New Revised ...132 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

Comprehensive and instructive
Wonderful source for Bible research. Thorough notes, indices, maps; comparisons among the many translations and interpretations used by different religions and denominations, historical background, etc. Fascinating to read even if research isn't your goal.

Oxford Dictionaries

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Excellent resource for spanish students
As a 5th year spanish student I am taking a composition class at a level that requires a dictionary that not only gives you word translations but also their context and correct phrasing. I originally purchased the oxford dictionary because of its extensive word selection; however, now I more appreciate the many examples and suggested words/phrases that make writing in a second language much ...

The Oxford Picture Dictionary: Monolingual11 reviews
Norma Shapiro, Jayme Adelson-Goldstein

Oxford University Press, 1999

My ESL thinks it's great!
I used this with a group of adult students from West Africa. They were the ones who decided to purchase the book out of their own pockets because they found it so helpful. They speak French and very little English. I do not speak French. The book was quite valuable.

The Oxford Companion to Wine, 3rd Edition49 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

It must be great
Along with most of the reviewers here, my wine-knowledgeable friends, to whom I gave this book as a wedding anniversary present, were extraordinarily pleased. They tell me that they learn something new from it every day, and that it has "everything about wine" within its covers.

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary: Sixth Edition (Shorter Oxford English Dictionary)20 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary
I had considered purchasing the complete Oxford Dictionary but the 'shorter' version is really quite sufficient. It truly is a remarkable dictionary which has no peers. The print is very good and even at my age of 76, I have no problems reading it. I'm very pleased with it. John de Boer

Oxford Atlas of the World, 14th Edition55 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

An Essential Reference
The new fourteenth edition of the Oxford Atlas of the World is an essential acquisition for all readers who recognize the need for excellent reference materials in a home library. Truly extraordinary, it offers all the expected information of an atlas plus far more in forematter and satellite photographs. Its extremely current maps are varied in scope and highly detailed yet clear and thus ...

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary50 reviews
Albert Sydney Hornby, Sally Wehmeier

Oxford University Press, 2005

Excellent Tool
My friend bought this dictionary, and I quickly followed suit. It gives concise definitions that are easy to understand, and it's the right size for my nightstand (not too big, but big enough to have a huge # of words). My friend said the CD is great, too, but I haven't used it yet.

The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus19 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

This is the one to get!
This is an essential for those days when you can't think of the right words. (And it's way better than an online thesaurus, or the lousy one that comes with MS Word.) This version is useful but, oddly enough, also really cool and fun. The Word Notes in it are great little essays that will completely sidetrack you from whatever you were trying to look up in the first place. Some of the ...

Oxford Latin Course: Part II (Oxford Latin Course)11 reviews
Maurice Balme, James Morwood

Oxford University Press, USA, 1999

This book is great for children learning Latin.
I am a historian who uses Latin on a daily basis -- I learned it the old-fashioned way -- with Wheelock. My son is learning Latin at the sixth-grade level and has made great progress using this series -- which seems to me to be the age level they are best for. If I were teaching high school or college Latin this would NOT be my series of choice. But my son has just finished the first book (I'm ...

Oxford Latin Course, Part I (2nd edition)20 reviews
Maurice Balme, James Morwood

Oxford University Press, USA, 1996

self-taught latin student
I can understand why most professors who teach latin in a formal school setting find this course (Three books and a reader, ISBN #s 0195212037, 0195212053,019521207x,0195212096, there are teacher's books available with all four) inadequate. This course is for students looking for a text that presents latin in a progressive and understandable format, which focuses on immersion in reading latin ...
