The Discovery of India (Centenary Edition)16 reviews
Jawaharlal Nehru

Oxford University Press, USA, 1989

Amazing and Uplifting
Written by Jawaharlal Nehru for his daughter Indira, this book is an introduction to the history of India as well as an insight into Nehru's political vision during the fight for Independance. The narrative framework is that of Nehru's stay in prison, which gives him time to write and look back on the history of the sub-continent, and on the Nationalist movement. I find this work simply ...

Oxford Picture Dictionary Cassettes (Set of 3 Cassettes)18 reviews
Norma Shapiro, Jayme Adelson-Goldstein

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

The Language Bible!
I have been teaching French, Spanish and ESL for many years. I have tried every teaching tool I could find. I can honestly say, this book is the best language tool ever! My students take this book with them everywhere they go and they are the ones who started calling this their "bible."

Garner's Modern American Usage25 reviews
Bryan A. Garner

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Indispensable
I ordered this reference based on an essay I read by David Foster Wallace titled "Authority and American Usage." In it, Wallace dissects the ongoing debate between the Prescriptivists (those claiming to defend the King's English) and the Descriptivists (those who claim language rules should reflect current practice rather than old rules), and he does so in the context of, essentially, a ...

Almost A Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence31 reviews
John Ferling

Oxford University Press, USA, 2009

Good Book
I really enjoy reading this book. I learned a lot about our country history. I agree with the author we were lucky to win the war. I found that I could not use the Table of content to go to the chapters. I've used that before to go to chapters in other books for the Kindle. Since the chapters in this book are really long ones suggest you bookmark each time you come to a new chapter. Makes ...

The Selected Journals of L. M. Montgomery, Vol. 3: 1921-192917 reviews
L. M. Montgomery

Oxford University Press, USA, 1993

I've been waiting so long
These journals, are beautifully put together. I remember when I found the first one and then each suceeding volume. I knew this one was coming. I even called the author at Guelph University to ask her how much longer I would have to wait. She said then that they had to wait for some of the people in the journals to die before they could publish them. I would guess Dr. Stuart Macdonald was ...

The Contemporary Parallel New Testament: 8 Translations: King James, New American Standard, New Century, ...17 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

Exceedingly enlightening- 8 popular-evangelical versions...
Who *really* needs 8 versions of the New Testament? I certainly didn't! But I *did* want 5 of the popular versions, and this was a very easy and effective way to get them. Here's a listing of all 8, from my very favorite to least... 1. NIV- New International Version '84: Accurate & readable- thank God for the NIV! I might not be a Christian today if it weren't for this version. It was the ...

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa200 reviews
E. B. Sledge

Oxford University Press, USA, 1990

The best on WW2 overall.
There are so many reasons to pan a book like this, writting, viewpoint, historical accuracy, but this book gets 5 stars in all catagories. So true, so full of action, so sad, so much to say. My true interest lies on the Eastern Front between Germany and Russia, but this was so good it is my favorite of WW2 in spite of the subject matter. Wow.

The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus21 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

Amazingly Constructed - Priceless to All Authors
I have used a number of Thesaurus versions in the past, but have never encounterd one so complete and helpful. Since my first published book, I have been studying a number of books to improve my writing skills. Too often prose becomes boring to editors, agents and readers alike. The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus has helped me keep my work fresh and non-repetitive. I would have paid twice the ...

Only the Ball Was White: A History of Legendary Black Players and All-Black Professional Teams17 reviews
Robert Peterson

Oxford University Press, USA, 1992

Oh, what a game.
Robert Peterson originally published this book in 1970 so it's really the original and standard history of the Negro Leagues. Peterson not only tells the history of these leagues and some of the great players, but also provides brief biographical sketches of dozens of players whose big league service would otherwise be lost to history. The book also has extensive appendices with annual standings ...

Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West16 reviews
Ethan Rarick

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Desperate Passage
Everyone knows the story of the Donner Party's coming West and getting stranded trying to climb over the Sierra Nevada mountains, but Mr. Rarick has told this story in such an exciting way that I could picture every detail in my mind, and almost feel their pain. Both my husband and I could not put the book down until we had finished it, and then we were sorry that the story was over. It was one ...

The American West at Risk: Science, Myths, and Politics of Land Abuse and Recovery13 reviews
Howard G. Wilshire, Jane E. Nielson, ...

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Not just the West at risk
This may be one of the most important books ever written. The title and cover photo don't do justice to the alarming thesis that our entire civilization is at risk, with a multitude of problems coming to a head this century. My children, ages 7 & 4, may face such gigantic problems by middle age as to make one despair. But never despair; these problems have been created by humans and we can ...

Oxford American Dictionary12 reviews
Eugene H. Ehrlich, Stuart Berg Flexner, ...

Avon, 1982

Compact and Indispensable
Need a small, lucid dictionary for looking up words and checking pronunciations? The Oxford American Dictionary (OAD) may be precisely what you need. Then again, it may not; it depends on what you value in a dictionary. It is important, first, to note that there are essentially two types of dictionaries. Hardcover dictionaries are often large, cumbersome, and not at all portable. Their ...

Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution13 reviews
James M. McPherson

Oxford University Press, USA, 1992

How Lincoln changed the United States...
This thin book which contains series of essays on how Abraham Lincoln revolutionized our nation during one of the most important periods of our nation proves to be well written and amazingly easy to understand. James McPherson writes clearly how the American Civil War was truly a revolutionary moment in our nation's history and how Lincoln took steps to ensure these changes. How we lived, our ...

Symposium (Oxford World's Classics)12 reviews
Plato

Oxford University Press, USA, 1994

The Wit and Wisdom of Love
Plato's "Symposium" will always be read because there will always be people who question the nature of Love. Agathon's dinner party is the scene of a conversation between a small group of men, who go around the table offering their views on Love. What does Love mean to us to-day? Reading over the responses of the dinner-guests and their host, we find the same range of answers in Ancient Greece ...

Thicker than Oil: America's Uneasy Partnership with Saudi Arabia15 reviews
Rachel Bronson

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

Highly readable, meticulously researched, even-handed
Rachel Bronson's book is an exceptional accomplishment. She uses a vast number of authoritative sources and weaves a compelling and readable account of complex geopolitical relationships. Marshall Lilly's recent (August 6, 2006) review is right on target. Thomas G. O'Brien III, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Reclaiming Conservatism: How a Great American Political Movement Got Lost--And How It Can Find Its Way Back16 reviews
Mickey Edwards

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Agree
I totally agree and cannot add more to the reviews already here. The Republican Party up until about 1990 was a party of optimism ("It's Morning in America"), belief in individual freedom, anti-communism, and belief in a strong national defense, and "getting government off our backs". Today: a party fixated on tradition and "traditional family values", moralizing, forcing one's personal ...

The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War16 reviews
Edward J. Renehan

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

Excellent distillation of Roosevelt's last years
Renehan's accounting of the last years of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. is condensed and fascinating. Mostly covering 1898 and 1910-1919, the book provides insight into the southern New York high society of the early 20th century. Famous names, including Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, Cowles, and Coolidge, parade across the pages. Nuggets include the mention of Harvard in that time as a conservative and ...

The Pursuit of the Millennium: Revolutionary Millenarians and Mystical Anarchists of the Middle Ages (Galaxy ...16 reviews
Norman Cohn

Oxford University Press, USA, 1970

As ever, the millennium is just around the corner
Cohn's "Pursuit of the Millennium" has aged well and nearing 50 years of age it is deservedly a classic. Its subjet might be considered by some to be esoteric: it deals with prophets from middle age Europe who led others to believe that the end of times was at hand, and that they had been chosen by God to purify the world in preparation for the Kingdom of the Last Days, and with pantheistic ...

Lost Chords: White Musicians and their Contribution to Jazz, 1915-194511 reviews
Richard M. Sudhalter

Oxford University Press, USA, 2001

More than you have any right to hope for...
Not a mere antidote to political correctness in jazz criticism; Lost Chords is a prewar cultural history, a lesson in music structure, a history of woodwind instruments, a guide to innovations in guitar tuning, AND MORE. It shows the musicians as human beings with all their failings, humor, drives, hard work, and talent. I especially loved the account of the bass sax --- an instrument that ...

Stand Firm Ye Boys from Maine: The 20th Maine and the Gettysburg Campaign16 reviews
Thomas A. Desjardin

Oxford University Press, USA, 2001

An excellent companion piece to The Killer Angels
I initially read this book after participating in a staff ride of the Gettysburg battlefield. My knowledge of the battle at that time came largely from Shaara's "The Killer Angels", and the subsequent film "Gettysburg". As both were meant to inspire and entertain rather than inform, I had an unrealistic understanding of the 20th Maine and its place in the struggle at Gettysburg. Thomas ...
