Gail E. Tompkins

The author gives step by step instruction on how to set up the four classroom strategies for teaching the language arts. This information is invaluable and even the most inexperienced teacher could use the ...

Patterns In The Mind: Language And Human Nature4 reviews
Ray S. Jackendorf

Basic Books, 1995

Compelling discussion of the language instinct
PItM is a very interesting read -- a survey of linguistic, or perhaps more properly neuro-linguistic, thinking a decade or so ago. Since then, considerable advances have been made in the neurosciences, yet we are no closer to answering the fundamental questions Jackendorf poses about how and where, precisely, the brain 'does' language. PItM is, thus, no less compelling today for the passage of ...

Pattern Languages of Program Design 5 (Software Patterns Series)4 reviews
Dragos Manolescu, Markus Voelter, ...

Addison-Wesley Professional, 2006

Are you serious about enterprise-grade object oriented problem solving or do you want to fool around?
This book offers you, the software engineer, the opportunity to learn from the hard won experience of some very elite engineers. That experience has been documented, shepherded, peer-reviewed, further refined, edited, and refined again. I wish I could succinctly communicate my object-oriented designs as cogently and as comprehensively as shown here. I know engineers at MIT Lincoln laboratory ...

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction (Center for Environmental Structure Series)78 reviews
Christopher Alexander

Oxford University Press, USA, 1977

Healing Our Industrial Age
Time has not eroded the significance of this book's contribution to the world of architecture. Though it reaches back to timeless solutions to architectural problems, it is also a way forward. As we devour our social capital in a half century of indiscriminate urban sprawl, this book offers alternatives that will help us revitalize our urban centers.

Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture Volume 4: A Pattern Language for Distributed Computing4 reviews
Frank Buschmann, Kevlin Henney, ...

Wiley, 2007

The Pattern Bible for Distributed Computing
This is a great book. It pulls together 114 patterns and shows how to use them in the context of distributed software architectures. It also claims to reference 150 patterns in other publications. The authors did a great job of creating a language composed of patterns for distributed software architectures. The book does not go into the details of the pattern's implementations, so you ...

Mind Control Language Patterns2 reviews
Dantalion Jones

Mind Control Publishing, 2008

Superior!
Dantalion Jones is by far the best author of books I've ever read! Everyone should come into the world with ALL of his books! This man knows how to write and he makes you take action where other books DON'T!! Dantalion Jones is in a class of his own, and his books are as amazing as he is! All his books cut to the core of the titles of his books, there is no "fluff." This man is a ...

Pattern Languages of Program Design 4 (Software Patterns Series)1 review

Addison Wesley Publishing Company, 1999

Okay
Some of the chapters are uninspired formalizations of basic object-oriented concepts, like "Abstract Class" - however, there are a few gems in this book like "Essence" and "Role Object" . . . definitely not as rewarding as the Gang of Four book, however. I hope someone else reviews the rest of it because I'm certainly not going to read the whole thing all the way through.

Pattern Languages of Program Design 3 (Software Patterns Series)3 reviews
Robert C. Martin, Dirk Riehle, ...

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1997

Many nuggets of software development knowledge, however you need some knowledge of design patterns to understand it
While patterns are an inherent part of the human experience, using them in software development is a recent phenomenon. The seminal event was the publication of the book, "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software", by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides. A Group so well-known that they are commonly referred to as the "Gang of Four," or GoF for short. ...

Pattern Languages of Program Design 2 (Software Patterns Series)2 reviews
John M. Vlissides, James O. Coplien, ...

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1996

Pattern articles capture expertise!
I was at the PLoP conference where the articles in this book were written (mine is number 24). It's a writers' workshop where each paper is metaphorically ripped in shreds and then reassembled, better than before. We worked hard to make these patterns right. Did our work pay off? You better believe it. I've read this book and the first in the series both cover to cover, and the best of this ...

Pattern Languages of Program Design (Software Patterns Series)2 reviews
James O. Coplien, Douglas C. Schmidt

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1995

Correction Please
Well, suffice it to say the one review here, aside from having nothing to say, could not be farther from the truth. I still open this book all the time. The whole series of PLoP books are immensely useful texts. To tell the truth, these compilation books of papers are, if they are good, in their own realm, far above what you will get from one author. Too much of the computer press turns out the ...

Design Patterns in Ruby (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series)15 reviews
Russ Olsen

Addison-Wesley Professional, 2007

Engaging and Educational
I am a Java developer whose Ruby experience is limited to firing up the interactive Ruby shell for a Hello World, or reading the first chapters of Programming Ruby before drifting away and vowing to learn Ruby "when I have more time". I work with the author, and purchased this book solely on the strength of his training courses and lectures. Russ Olsen in book-format is just as effective a ...

In Hypnotic language, Burton shows therapists how to expand the client's cognitive awareness, specifically, the cognitive and perceptual processes involved in meaning making. In doing so, the ...

Pattern Oriented Software Architecture Volume 5: On Patterns and Pattern Languages1 review
Frank Buschmann, Kevlin Henney, ...

Wiley, 2007

A Book about Patterns
I just saw that POSA5 does not have a review. It definitely deserves one, so here we go. In the spirit of full disclosure, I know Frank and Kevlin quite well through our work in the patterns community. But I am still entitled to my own opinions when it comes to book reviews! POSA5 is different from the other four POSA's. In a sense, it is a "meta" book, a book about patterns, rather than a ...
