Persian Cooking4 reviews
Nesta Ramazani

Ibex Publishers, Inc., 2000

Very Good Persian Cookbook
I'm from Iran and have used various Persian cookbooks. This is the only one in English where the recipes turned out as they should have.

The Persian Boy70 reviews
Mary Renault

Vintage, 1988

A huge hit
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down, so I ended up reading from about 11 pm to 6 am. This is probably the first real historical fiction I've ever read, and it's made me hungry for more. ::grins:: The characters were believable, if Renaults portrayal of the times/societies were correct. I loved Bagoas' "voice", and his absolute devotion and love he develops for Alexander. You see Alexander's ...

New Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking and Ceremonies55 reviews
Najmieh Batmanglij

Mage Publishers, 1992

Stunningly beautiful cookbook
I have to admit, this may not be the most practical cookbook out there. It does feature some tough-to-find ingredients (such as "barberries," "Persian lime powder", etc.), and there are a lot of kebab type recipes that call for grilling - not the most practical for a busy weeknight cook. Some of the recipes here will require a commitment of time. However, that said, there are also many recipes ...

Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West46 reviews
Tom Holland

Anchor, 2007

Do you want to know how it all happened?
What were the circumstances that led up to the wars between Greece and Persia? In Tom Holland's Persian Fire, this question is answered with careful analysis and surprising clarity. The author gives Persia and Greece an equal survey of the two states' rise to power, making the reader clear as to how both civilizations regarded themselves and the world around them. Consequences are inevitably made ...

Persian Girls: A Memoir26 reviews
Nahid Rachlin

Tarcher, 2006

A Memoir that reads like a novel
The front cover of Persian Girls: A Memoir by Nahib Rachlin has a quote from a Boston Globe reviewer saying that the "memoir reads like a novel", which I felt was very accurate. Nahib has provided us with a peek into her world, spanning over fifty years, and immersing us in the culture of Iran and her family. Nahib pulls us quickly into her world, showing us her split childhood - life with her ...

The Persian Puzzle: The Conflict Between Iran and America34 reviews
Kenneth Pollack

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2005

This Book Made Me Smarter
This book provides an in-depth accounting of the American-Iranian relationship. The book focuses very little on ancient Iranian history - instead picking up with the 1953 coup against Mossadeq, the Pahlavi shahs, the 1979 Revolution, and the US-Iranian issues that have stemmed from those incidents. After detailing the history, the author explains why President Clinton's effort to renew ties ...

The Greco-Persian Wars31 reviews
Peter Green

University of California Press, 1998

Highly recommended; exciting read with sound scholarship
This book was a very pleasant surprise. I expected a dry, academic work. But this book turns out to be a fascinatingly detailed military account of the Persian Wars that while written in an almost journalistically readable narrative style still has virtually every paragraph footnoted with solid sources. Two revelations that came upon me in the book: (1) While Thermopylae was highy ...

The Persian Pickle Club85 reviews
Sandra Dallas

St. Martin's Press, 1996

A Super Book
Wewouts Book Club, February 24, 2007. This book had a "Fried Green Tomatoes, Whistle Stop" feel to it for me. A great book in how friends, true friends, will keep their mouths shut and not gossip about anything bad. A good book to read about the bonds of true friendship.

Eminent Persians
Abbas Milani

Syracuse University Press, 2008

As the 25th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution approached, Abbas Milani realized that very little, if any, attention had been given to the entire prerevolutionary generation. Political upheavals and a tradition of neglecting the history of past regimes have resulted in a cultural memory loss, erasing the contributions of a generation of individuals. "Eminent Persians" seeks to rectify that loss. Milani's groundbreaking portrait of modern Iran ...

Persian-english English-persian Learner's Dictionary: A Dictionary for English Speakers Studying Persian ...9 reviews
Yavar Dehghani

Ibex Publishers, 2008

One of the Best, Could Be Better
Decent Persian (aka Farsi, Dari) dictionaries are hard to find. Persian words are typically not written with the short vowels, and almost nowhere will you find reference books that tell you how to pronounce these words. This is one of the few dictionaries that show you the full pronunciation. The printing is clean and easy to read. The definitions are concise, and mostly right-on. Two ...

In a Persian Kitchen: Favorite Recipes from the Near East14 reviews
Maideh Mazda

Tuttle Publishing, 1989

A Long Term Keeper
We bought this cookbook in hardback when we were first married shortly after it first came out and it is still one of our most frequently used favorites. We recently bought copies for our kids because they're always borrowing ours and we frequently have trouble tracking it down. Two recipes worth the price of admission by themselves: 'Persian meat loaf' - still our favorite meatloaf after 40 ...

Lonely Planet Farsi (Persian) Phrasebook14 reviews
Yavar Dehghani

Lonely Planet, 2001

surprisingly good
Although this is a mini-sized paperback that could easily fit into your shirt pocket, it's remarkably useful. Each page typically has three columns: the leftmost is the English, the middle is the Farsi in romanized letters, and the right column is the Farsi in Arabic script. But it's not merely a phrasebook: there are paragraphs scattered throughout to relieve the monotony. For example, ...

Persian Grammar: For Reference and Revision7 reviews
John Mace

RoutledgeCurzon, 2002

This should be your first book
Definitely the best introductory Farsi book I have seen. The easiest to work through, although I believe it is absolutely necessary to be painstaking about finishing each and every one of the numerous exercises provided. It is very nice to have a key provided for each lesson (this is the major downfall of Thackston's book, be nazer-e-man). Some errors, but not sufficient to hinder the learner.

One Thousand & One Persian-English Proverbs: Learning Language and Culture Through Commonly Used Sayings2 reviews
Hadi Khorsandi, Shusha Guppy

Ibex Publishers, 2002

Great learning tool
and fun to boot. The literal translations of the proverbs make this book very useful for building your Persian vocabulary. I've learned literally hundreds of new words making my way through this book. I also appreciate the concise but information-packed footnotes. My only request if Ms. Habibian ever does another edition would be for a little more vowelling or transliteration, especially for ...

Persian Poets (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets)1 review

Everyman's Library, 2000

Good Selection and Good Translations
Persian Poetry has come onto the popular scene recently with interest in Rumi and his mystical/love poems. However, those interested might also be interested in the tradition of such poetry that Rumi comes out of. Actually Rumi is considered as only one of the four great mystical poets in Persia (and not necessarily the best of them). Washington's selection is an intelligent one, and the poems ...

Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Iran47 reviews
Elaine Sciolino

Free Press, 2005

The Essence of a Nation
Elaine Sciolino's Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Iran is the fascinating account of an American journalist in revolutionary Iran that covers from its earliest beginnings in 1979, when this young correspondent for Newsweek traveled to Tehran with the Ayatollah Khomeini on his return from exile, through the new millennium and the fight for the country's future that is going on today, as a ...

Persian Letters (Oxford World's Classics)11 reviews
Montesquieu

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Philosophy in the guise of fiction
This was one of the books I read in my History of the Enlightenment Class my junior year of college. Our brilliant professor didn't assign all of the letters to read, though, and later I went back and read all of the book, not just the ones we'd been assigned to read for class. A lot of books about the politics and philosophy of a certain period in time don't age well, but this one, for the ...

An Introduction to Persian22 reviews
W. M. Thackston

Ibex Publishers, 1993

Best for the intended purpose
Thackston's book is one of the best out there for learning Persian. Admittedly, there aren't too many books out there. This book is the best if you're taking a course in Persian, are a heritage speaker, or otherwise have an elementary grasp of the fundamentals. While Lambton's book is much more thorough, Thackston spares us the dense grammar as well as the use of superfluous, hyper-technical ...

History of the Persian Empire (Phoenix Books)11 reviews
A.T. Olmstead

University Of Chicago Press, 1959

Impressive. Worth the Time to Read.
This book is utterly remarkable. Well written and incredibly comprehensive iteration of the scope, flow and detail of the empire that was Persia, from early pre-Empire times to the Alexandrian conquest (and a bit beyond). It discusses legal, social, military, architectural, religious and business practices, inter-familial rivalries, conquests, etc., in remarkable detail, and it even puts ...
