Linda J. Lear

Henry Holt & Company, 1997

Thank You Rachel
How many people today remember Rachel Carson? When you see an eagle or a falcon or a hawk, you can than k Rachel Carson. Her book "Silent Spring" incited action almost immediately against irresponsible pesticide use, including DDT, and launched an ecology movement that led to the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. Canary in the Courtroom: How Pesticide Poisoning Changed a Woman's Life and Forced Her into Civil Action3 reviews
Jessie MacLeod

iUniverse, Inc., 2006

Another Rachel Carson
Canary in the Courtroom is a book that is hard to put down. Ms. MacLeod has separated fact from fiction and exposed holes in several programs designed to protect the public from harmful chemicals. The book is a treatise on how individuals are lead to believe in the safety of chemicals and how one person fought for the truth to be told. For the sake of future generations health, lets hope we ...

The Death of Ramon Gonzalez: The Modern Agricultural Dilemma2 reviews
Angus Lindsay Wright

University of Texas Press, 1990

A true heart-wrenching occupational health story
This story details how people suffer and die from the repressive labor practices of pesticide-addicted agribusiness. It should give pause to people eating foods produced and harvested in places whose labor practices are known to be repressive. It should spur support for "fairly-traded" foods and also should spur investigations into the activities of agribusinesses using pesticides but probably ...

Ornamental pest management: A training manual for commercial pesticide applicators (catory 3b)4 reviews
Kay Sicheneder

Michigan State University, Cooperative Extension Service, 1991

Great B&W photos of young Bob Dylan
This seems to be a reprint of a book that first came out in the 60's. I still have my copy but it's a smaller format than this reprint. It is chock full of great photos of Dylan being whimsical and eccentric, posing in a studio setting. Very professional. All seem to be from the "Highway 61 Revisited" period (1965)when Dylan affected a "mod" style of clothes, including polka-dot shirts and Beatle ...

Corn (Pesticides & wildlife)14 reviews
William E Palmer

N.C. Cooperative Extension Service, 1992

Legal Education for all
A great book. Written by a expert in communication. Each case brought you into the defense, you believe in the actions brought forward to give not only a legal defense by our constitution but to see a inocent person never is incarcerated,if that ever comes to pass. I would hope Mr. Black will write more, he is able to take a very complicated subject and break it down to a laymans understanding.

Basic Guide To Pesticides: Their Characteristics And Hazards: Their Characteristics & Hazards1 review

CRC, 1992

Guide Still a Great Reference
Bear in mind the book was published in 1992. But the text has withstood the test of time. It's a wealth of information for pesticide educators that can now be supplemented by on-line information. To give you a clue, I don't plan to sell my used copy because of the extensive pesticide-specific data, and the excellent articles I can't find anywhere else. A tribute to Rachel herself.

Introduction to Insect Pest Management, 3rd Edition1 review

Wiley-Interscience, 1994

Agriculture Entomology Textbook
In the Metcalfian style, established in preceeding texts by a preceeding Metcalf; Destructive and Useful Insects by Metcalf and Flint (early 60's), this textbook was, I believe, intended for agricultural entomology students and should serve very well for such purpose.

How to Get Your Lawn and Garden Off Drugs: Pesticide Free Gardening for a Healthier Environment1 review
Carole Rubin

Great introduction to organic gardening!
This book was is intended for Canadian audiences, but is sufficiently general to apply just about anywhere. It focuses on the absolute basics, laid out in easy to digest steps. There are 5 simple chapters, plus glossary, resource listings (for Canadians), and additional ...

The Bread and Circus Whole Food Bible: How to Select and Prepare Safe Healthful Foods Without Pesticides or ...1 review
Christopher S. Kilham, Rachel Reid, ...

Addison-Wesley, 1991

no title
Very, very impressed with this book. Written in 1990, he was way ahead of the curve in his assessments and judgements on the food industry. Last 100 pages are recipes which I have mostly made and were all good. If we are what we eat, we're all in trouble. Very enlightening. Read this in conjunction with "My Year of Meats" by Ruth Ozeki and the February, 2006, issue of "Consumer Reports".
