The Hellbound Heart62 reviews
Clive Barker

Earthling Publications, 2007

Can you put the puzzle box down?
I have been a fan of Clive Barker since reading Imagica a couple years ago. Barker can write some truly imaginative books. He is one of the authors that breaks the mold of our commercial carbon copy writing industry. I knew that if I was going to ever see myself a fan of his works I had to read Hellbound Heart. This is the book that started the whole Hellraiser movie series. If you ever saw ...

Unmitigated England: A Country Lost and Found1 review
Peter Ashley

Everyman's Library, 2006

Today's bargain --NOSTALGIA-- only 2s6d
Peter Ashley's book is a delightfully quirky look at an almost lost England. Quirky because this is a very personal and different view from most books about the subject. He has cleverly combined traditional things: a village and its church, the countryside, agriculture, the seaside with commercial things: the red phone box, local shops, railways, Southdown coaches and plenty of products like ...

Our Song: The Story of O CanadaÂ?: The Canadian National Anthem (My Canada) (My Canada) (My Canada)1 review
Peter Kuitenbrouwer

Lobster Press, 2004

Canadian Anthem Born at Quebec Party
Picture a banquet hall, at a skating rink in Quebec City, in 1880, the time of gas lamps and horse-drawn carriages. Five hundred people sit along long tables. The occasion: a major celebration of the French in North America. After a meal of succulent meats and mouth-watering pies, the band strikes up. The crowd rises and "electrified by an unstoppable impulse," report those who were there, sings, ...

Barnes and Noble, Inc., 1993

New glimpses of favorite sleuths
Almost everyone is here, expected (Brother Caadfael) and unexpected (Leonardo da Vinci), in short-story format. Perfect gift for mystery/history buffs recuperating from surgery or illness!

THE PENDRAGON CHRONICLES3 reviews
Mike Ashley

Peter Bedrick Books, 1990

Dan's Heroic Book Reveiw
The Pendragon Chronicles : Heroic Fantasy from the Time of King Arthur is some of the best peices of work put down in one book. The 12 stories in this book prove and prove again why arthurain stories are the most wirtin type of stories ever. Most of the stories have detailed and booldy battles in them, some even have love and lust. All of my favorite characters show up in the stories, Sir Arthur ...

Mammoth Collection of Historical Whodunnits and Historical Detectives (2 Books in Slipcase)1 review

Robinson Publishing, 1995

Excellent collections
I am extremely pleased with Mike Ashley as an editor of historical mysteries and happily track down his books. These are older but quality collections that I reccomend. As an historian none of them irked me with glaring errors, and as a reader none of them bothered me with annoying footnotes and pomposity. I would reccomend that the reader not read the little author prefaces before reading the ...

Shearwater Pottery4 reviews
Dod Stewart, Marjorie Anderson Ashley

Bristol Publishing, 2005

Shearwater
This is an amazingly thorough and beautiful full-color volume depicting the pottery of the Anderson family, Mississippi's premier potters. There are plenty of books featuring the astounding contributions of Walter Inglis Anderson to the art world, but this book gives equal emphasis to the other family artisians, all highly talented individuals. Dod Stewart has put together the definitive volume ...

More from Unmitigated England1 review
Peter Ashley

Everyman's Library, 2007

Everyday English passions
A wonderful second book from Peter Ashley. Especially good because it carries on the idea of the first book in the same format, (though I preferred the semi matt paper in the earlier edition). All the usual goodies are included, for example: how to watch cricket, post box collection or reading books and a cup of cocoa. `Sunlight on the Meccano' is an interesting chapter about products that ...

Fences, Gates and Walls1 review
E. Ashley Rooney

Schiffer Publishing, 2007

Don't Fence Me In
ee P. Dunne, a gardener, 05/21/2007 Don't Fence Me In My wife wanted a white picket fence. I wanted something somewhat more unique. We were totally confused when we went to look at fences --there were so many different varieties. So we went to Barnes & Noble to do some research and make an informed decision together! Rooney's book was a great help -- and incidentally good fun to read. Her ...

Historical Whodunits: Crimes Solved by Brother Cadfael, Brother Athelstan, Decius Metellus, Sister Frevisse, ...2 reviews

Barnes & Noble Books, 1997

Can't Get Enough Historical Mysteries!
To me historical mysteries are so much more pleasant than contemporary ones. Perhaps it is because the historical ones are not in the least threatening. This book of short mysteries is not only very pleasant to read, but it gave me a list of new authors to look up in the library.

Historical Whodunits3 reviews

Barnes & Noble Books, 1993

23 mysteries, from ancient Egypt to Holmes - mixed bag
Historical = before the author's birth. The short stories herein are divided into 4 sections. Most were first published in _Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine_; 5 were first printed in this collection, noted below as "original". Ellis Peters' foreword should interest Cadfael fans, as she talks a little about how she came to create the series. Part I: THE ANCIENT WORLD Herodotus: "The Thief versus ...

Old Barns - New Homes: A Showcase Of Architectural Conversions3 reviews
E. Ashley Rooney

Schiffer Publishing, 2004

A fantastic trip through beautiful barns, both old and new!
I must confess that I have always harbored a deep love of barns; maybe it simply out of a longing for a simpler time, and all that farms and their barns represent, or maybe because I am a habitual packrat and I'd love to have all that storage! Regardless of the reason, when I saw this book as soon-to-be-released, I got in touch with the publisher and was able to see an advance copy. The ...

The Mammoth Book of Egyptian Whodunnits (Mammoth Books)2 reviews

Carroll & Graf, 2002

If you like History and Mystery....
These stories are set in various times during Ancient Egypt, and are written by masters in the field of historical mystery. Stories were well crafted and riveting. I would have prefered a little more background on both the author and the main characters, especially the the authors I hadn't read before, but it's not really necessary. I will be looking for some of the authors to read more about ...

Charlie Christian: Solo Flight - The Seminal Electric Guitarist3 reviews
Peter Broadbent, Charlie Christian

Ashley Mark Publishing Company, 2003

Great book but buy the right one!
Despite what other reviewers state, I liked this book. There were even some great anecdotes from other musicians that knew CC. T-Bone Walker states that he used to jam with Charlie Christian on a street corner...that would be a sight to see and hear! The other books in the series are Wes Montgomery and Django, I own them all. I like the discography at the end and the pics are great too!

The Mammoth Book of Sorcerers' Tales : The Ultimate Collection of Magical Fantasy from Tom Holt, Ursula K. ...3 reviews

Running Press, 2004

Something for Everyone
What an excellent short story collection! Though I have been a science fiction / fantasy fan for much of my life, I have only recently begun to read anthologies such as this one; however, I have read quite a lot in the past few years. Of the 15 or so that I've enjoyed, I do not hesitate to recommend this book as one of the best. Each of its 23 short stories is an amazing work of art that will ...

Taxi: The Harry Chapin Story13 reviews
Peter M. Coan

Ashley Books, 1987

An intimate portrait of Harry Chapin by his good friend
To anyone who remembers the music industry of the 70's (or anyone who has read Harry Chapin's lyrics, for that matter), the fact that he wasn't always faithful to his wife will come as no great surprise. Those reviewers who feel the book treats Chapin's widow, Sandy, unfairly puzzle me, however. In fact, Coan portrays her as the main catalyst for the humanitarian efforts which would become ...
