Read the book for the philosophy of risk
I consider The Black Swan one of the most influential books in my life. I reread it several times, and each time I discovered some nuances relevant to whatever I was working on at the time. The book is truly timeless. The Black Swan does not teach you *what* to do. It crisply describes the concept in the Introduction and then presents this concept from different angles -- many angles, ...

Ever hear of someone trying to learn from their good intentions?
Not really, no. That's because we don't need a lesson in trying to do good in the world. We are already presented with this side of history when we are children, but if you missed that part of social studies, this is the book for you.

A pithy, pragmatic introduction to brain science & meditation
I started using this book in my life coaching work and personal meditation practice before even finishing it! Authors Rick Hanson and Richard Mendius have published a gem: This is a highly readable guide to actually using scientific knowledge about the brain in meditation and daily life. Buddha's Brain is written for ease of learning and retention. It's chapter synopses, guided meditations, and ...

The real deal
Because of "The Secret", and my fearless application of its principles, I have received several "out-of-the-blue" benefits: 1) I no longer wear glasses. I'd worn them since I was 16. I'm 34. 2) I have a new job with a great boss, and opportunity for advancement; 3) I have projected numerous parking places, dinner tables, and other limited-quantity privileges at peak times, occasionally being ...

Not as Simple as it seems
On reading the entire block of 60-odd reviews, I find that more than half of them, even while admiring Sowell's evenhandedness, misstate the carefulness of the book's positions. In the an attempt to pay tribute to the brilliance of this (rather dense, historical & philosophical ) book, I'll try to correct this. This book presents two visions of the world. However, contrary to most of the ...

A thought-provoking, enjoyable, and important book
Disclaimer: I'm not a vegetarian (yet, but probably soon). I do enjoy meat. I'm certainly not an animal activist, and one recent post on my Facebook account (before reading the book) was "PETA= People Eating Tasty Animals". Having said that, my opinion is that if everyone in the U.S. read this book, the world be a better place. As Amazon customers, we search endlessly for those rare gems, ...

Fantastic book!
Good things: The book was in perfect condition and the price was really cheap. Bad things: 1) I don't like being charged before I have the product in my hands. 2) It passed a month from the day I ordered until I received the book. I've already ordered other books to the USA (I live in Spain) and it didn't take so long.

HUGE Book, Deep Look From One Perspective
This is a society-changing piece of work. This is a magnum opus from a very specific point of view that overlooks both major consciousness figures and major biosphere figures. Herman Daly gets one note, Tom Atlee, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Steve McIntosh are not in this book. Buckminster Fuller, Paul Hawken, the Meadows, E. O. Wilson on Consilience, J. F Rischard on HIGH NOON, etcetera, are ...

Wonderful picture of a garden
This is a book I wish I'd caught earlier - written in the late 80's, it displays the kind of writing that made Pollan famous. The combination of history, garden information, and good writing makes it a pleasure to follow Pollan's development of his property and his understanding of what makes his work 'gardening.' I see gardens and landscaping differently after reading this book.

If this is your type of book, you'll like this one.
Years ago I used to love studying and thinking about philosophy. It was just stunning to realize how so very differently and insightfully different people could thoughtfully view the world, our place in it, what we should do if we wanted to do "the right thing", and how we could "think better". I got into this book because a mutual friend had visited Sandel's "Justice" web site, [...], and ...

Brilliant and erudite, Karen Armstrong makes a case for God!
The Case for God Well researched and eloquently stated, Armstrong's "A Case for God" is a must-read for doubters and believers alike. It is carefully researched, and as with everything she writes, it is intelligent and thoughtFul and raises timely issues. This is not an easy read, but is well worth the effort. Armstrong links opposing points of religious views with historical and societal events ...

This was a brilliant read - written with humour and modesty - informative without being high and mighty. I thoroughly recommend it (this is the first review I have ever been inspired to write)! Everything is explained simply but with enough depth to ensure the ...

Excellent
This book is a very good analysis of the "proof" that is commonly given for the existence of a god. I was hesitant to give it a read at first, because I'd heard that Dawkins tends to be very "strident", but he isn't at all. He's simply treating religion and the existence of god as a hypothesis, and writing about just like a scientist would write about any other hypothesis. We're so used to the ...

The principles and tactics of dialectical behavior therapy (and the people that taught them to me) saved my life. This workbook is an excellent tool to supplement DBT training but is not a stand-alone treatise on DBT. A helpful source for review and DBT skill mastery. Learning DBT from any book without the group training and one-on-one counseling would be great, but is not realistic. If you ...
