In Good Company!
The National Book Critics Circle has voted Eric Gansworth's A Half-Life of Cardio pulmonary Function to third place in the Spring 2008 "Good Reads" list in Poetry. The other four poets who's books made the list are; Grace Paley in first place, Frank Bidart in second, Marie Howe in fourth, and Robert Pinsky in fifth. This puts Gansworth's Half-Life in some very good company! The National Book ...

Something divine
Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, professor of English, is an accomplished poet, with grace and sensitivity that crosses artistic media and achieves great expression in volumes such as 'Drawn By the Light: Poems on Rembrandt's Religious Paintings.' The layout and print quality of this text is remarkable. The colours leap from the page, even given the relatively muted tones and darker tones Rembrandt ...

The joy of imagination
This delightful book of strange things and clever rhymes is a joy to read. The rhymes are imaginative, instructive, silly and alliterative. This gem is appealing on many levels: the light-hearted poetry, the colorful, whimsical illustrations and nature's gallery of fascinating creatures to stimulate youthful curiosity. With a granddaughter in the first grade, I am always looking for books that ...

Beautiful Words and Inspiring Art!
Being a beginning self-taught student in Spanish with a special interest in Mexican Spanish by way of my residency in Texas, I took a chance on purchasing this bilingual book and was more than delighted by what I found inside. The convenient side-by-side text of the poems and short stories makes it easy to follow the translations and improve language skills. However, the real treasures in this ...

Outstanding children's story!
As a reading tutor, I have enjoyed sharing this book with my 4th grade students. It examins the differences of people, our different cultures, and is a colorful and enchanting story. My kids, both boys and girls are facinated by this book, and we always continue a dialogue with it. The recognize the author, as one their parents respect, and enjoy talking about it and laughing about the silly ...

Paint me a Poem
I find this book a wonderful introduction to art for children. It is inspiring, and delightful. I love especially how in some of the works of Art chosen by Mrs. Rowden , she identifies colors with music and instruments. It truly makes the paintings come alive. It is a beautiful book, and one that I would highly recommend to all my students!

Wow!
This coupling of poetry with painting is as natural as putting words to music. The inner light of the subjects' humanity becomes as palpable as the soft light that fills Vermeer's paintings. Wonderful!

A "Universal" treat!
I think Douglas Florian's new book, 'comets, stars, the moon and mars' is his most expressive yet. Beginning with the poem "skywatch," two children look at the sky. The next poem is "the universe." Die cut "planet" holes move the reader deeper and further through space. From "mercury" to "venus" to "the earth" to "the moon" the poems continue in order according to their distance from the ...

Great fun, even for kids who aren't "insect lovers"
This is a book of poems about insects. The poems are great; their content is funny and rhythmic. Through the poems we learn about the various insects. Some have very creative text formatting such as the inchworm; the text is shaped like a humped-up inchworm. The illustrations are very creative collages that are unique compared to most other children's books. I began reading this when my first ...

NOT AS SIMPLE AS IT LOOKS.
This is a rather unique little book. At first glance (without a thoughtful read), the short poems are rather simple in nature and are indeed quite easy to read, which is good for the young ones. On the other hand, the word play the author uses is actually quite complex. He actually has fun with words and I suspects, hopes his adult readers will also. The art at first glance is simple too. To ...

Excellent product, beautifully reprinted!
This is a reprint of the original Gutheil score issued when the work was published. Sometimes I wish that empty staves could have been eliminated, but given how time and again instruments not expected at the moment are nevertheless called upon, that's a minor fault at worst. Very legible, authoritative and a pleasure to have - be it in one's lap when following, or on the podium for conducting! ...

The Pen as Complement to the Brush
"Ye mountains, woods, rocks, and impetuous streams Ye mantling heav'ns -- Speak -- speak for me!" Arguably, one of America's most important artists, and the founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, Thomas Cole also had a literary side. Largely unknown, his compositions with the pen encompass more than 100 poems and a healthy smattering of prose. A few were published, but ...

A Slim Volme That Opens a Wide Window into Spiritual Life with Van Gogh
One day recently, I spread dozens of spiritually themed books across a long series of tables and I invited a group of teenagers to pick up whatever caught their eyes - literally judging these books by their covers. Then, I asked them to spend a little while exploring each book and, finally, explain to us all (with a video camera rolling for our Web magazine, ReadTheSpirit) why they were drawn to ...

Powerful poems sweetened with the gift of art
A book to read and savour and to dip into again and again and for sure to pass along to fellow travelers working for peace and justice. The poems are simple and powerful and often stark and unblinking. Paley's head on wide opened look at war and poverty and sorrow is softened with the gift of beautiful paintings by Vera Williams. "For George" (or in my case, my dad) "What was left ...

fun for kids & adults
My husband does story time when our 3-year-old goes to bed each night, and they both love this book. The poems are silly and entertaining on both a child's and an adult's levels. It's easy to flip through and pick out a few poems each night. The poems help my daughter learn new things - or lesser-known facts - about familiar animals, and also learn about new animals. The meter & rhymes are ...

A soulful reflection of serenity and contentment with one's lot.
My Own Places: Poems On John Constable by Don Kerr (Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at the University of Saskatchewan) is a collection of free-verse poetry from brief lyric poems to extended narratives, all inspired by British landscape painter John Constable (1776-1837). Constable's work had a local quality that reflected his unwillingness to travel far from home. A handful of ...

Beautifully written
This book is a beautifully written story of how a man grieves the loss of his wife. Nice to read something about grieving from the person who experienced it rather then a Dr. The man's perspective of grieve and loss is also enlightening.
