American Hero
John Quincy Adams is never on any list of great presidents. But he should be near the top of any list of great Americans, right up there with George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Joseph Wheelan's excellent new book explains why. Adams had an extraordinary political career, both before and after his single term as president. Wheelan's book focuses on Adams's ...

Amazing biography
This is one of those rare biographies which pulls you in from the beginning and never lets go. It is an excellent look at one of the truly under-appreciated presidents. Truman was an amazing man and an incredible public servant. The sense of history that this biography brings makes it a must-read for anyone interested in American history and/or American politics.

Bill and Babe are an inspiration to all of us
In "Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends", Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron not only tell us more in-depth stories of their Easy Company exploits but give us a true insight into the bonds formed in battle that most of the rest of us never experience let alone understand. Heffron and Guarnere grew up literally just blocks from each other on the tough streets of Depression era Philadelphia with the ...

A candy bar can be more effective than a fighter jet
A fast and interesting read -- it reminded me of The Rising Tide in the way it presented a large amount of historical detail in an easily accessible format. I really enjoyed the subtle message that it contains for current foreign policy. America became a model for the world in the aftermath of World War II by showing not just strength but compassion. Sometimes a candy bar is a more effective tool ...

My eyes will never be the same.
From the article titled "Document Says Oil Chiefs Met With Cheney Task Force", in the Washington Post, "The White House went to great lengths to keep these meetings secret, and now oil executives may be lying to Congress about their role in the Cheney task force," Lautenberg said. You might find the answer for why we are in Iraq, if you were to read "Powerdown: Options and Actions for a ...

Are Charles Holcomb and Melissa actually Douglas Hensley (and Pattie Hensley's husband)?
A reviewer, "Charles Holcomb", has reviewed all the books written by Douglas Hensley and Pattie Hensley. Reviewer "Melissa" is also now curiously reviewing the same list as "Charles Holcomb". He has also reviewed several competing books -- such as this one -- and used those reviews as an opportunity to mention the "superior quality" of the book written by Douglas Hensley or Pattie Hensley. The ...

Kinda makes you think
One of the few books that I have had to read in one sitting. It forced me to reconsider a few assumptions I had been leaning towards, (e.g., Bush somehow stole Ohio in 2004). It also gave me serious pause about the future of our democracy in an age when partisans of every stripe can so finely tune a message, engineer facts, and manipulate the media (with the media's acquiesence) so as to ...

Introspective As Well As Thought Provoking
What strikes me about this book is the fact that the author seems to genuinely care about the responses he gets from his interviewees. I know I'm doing some reading between the lines, but I believe it's because the author himself has spent a good amount of time reflecting on his own predjudices and experiences, and I commend him for doing so. I hope those who read his book will be inspired to do ...

mind stretching
Being an engineer, I prefer not to be carried away with my use of words, but this book just makes, channels the reader talk, think, again talk on it in the ways he/she is not very used to. Nevertheless, this is a good exercise in the broadest sense of the word for everybody. It should be so actively read that I can even recommend it to those who would like to lose weight.

Pre-election Reading
This is a must read for everyone who plans to vote in November's election. The world presented by Zakariah can open the eyes of Americans who have not had the opportunity to travel to the rising countries. In readable prose, Zakariah describes what is happening now in places like China and India and we what we, in America, must face in the near future as a result. The balance of power is ...

Whoa!
What a fascinating, very well written book! It seemed every page had a juicy morsel or two and really opened my eyes into what was really going on during the last months of John Kennedy's life and why Jackie married Aristotle Onassis. As a teenager, I was shocked she'd married someone who obviously wasn't a friend of the United States. But Peter Evans portrays Onassis as someone so fascinating, ...

Always Relevant . . . and Still a Lively Read at That!
Editor Bernard Bailyn has assembled a first-rate collection of letters, circulars, pamphlets, speeches, and what would be the colonial equivalent of modern op-ed pieces that allows today's readers to witness the founding of a government through the eyes of (and with the voices of) those who were really there. But don't be fooled into thinking this is going to be the stilted, polite prose that ...

Forgotten History
This book is about the inspirational story of North Platte, Nebraska, a town that served as a brief haven for millions of World War II American soldiers. From Christmas Day 1941 until the end of the war, the residents welcomed every troop train with food, drink, magazines and words of encouragement. This was a brief moment of time that sustained these soldiers when they were away from their ...

a true test for Detente
The moment I finished reading this book, the image of the late USA President came to me when he left office and waved to the crowd his last Good-bye. Nixon looked hesitant and undecided like a man relieved of an overwhelming burden. His Good-bye expressions were made indicating how far he had worn out of his Office; his eyes refused to meet the camera. Perhaps what is quite revealing is that ...

This book has arrived just in time for the 2008 election. Along with the PBS program, "Bush's War", this should be required reading for all voters. We can change the future but we must understand the past. Thank you again Susan for your excellent analysis.

One of the Greatest
Oh my God!! This book was SO good!! It is a book that once you start reading, you just can't put it down. I have read this book twice, but hadn't had the chance to write a review. Jada and Born's story is a classic. Their story had me on a rollercoaster, and there were parts that had me crying. It was amazing to see the things that Jada endured...from her mother never standing for her, to her ...

"To Illuminate a Brighter Path Forward"
On 5 June 1947, US Secretary of State General George Marshall (he always preferred "General") gave Harvard University's Commencement Address from the steps of the Memorial Chapel aboard the pristine Cambridge campus. Marshall's speech provided the broadest outlines of what would come to be known as the "Marshall Plan," a plan to reinvigorate and rehabilitate Western Europe. Greg Behrman's fine ...

First good history of the last 30 years
I read this book for a graduate class in American history. James T. Gore, which settled the presidential election ...

Loved it
I'm surprised to see so many people disappointed with this book, and I did think that it dragged a little in places. I also thought the excessive repetitions between storylines was a little too cute and tiring--oh, this line got repeated by a different person; oh, this person is contradicting their other universe alter-ego, how ironic--until I realized that there was more going on beneath the ...
