A Russian Diary: A Journalist's Final Account of Life, Corruption, and Death in Putin's Russia7 reviews
Anna Politkovskaya

Random House, 2007

Sense of Sadness from Politkovskaya Murder
For those who care about Russia, it is hard to put this book down. It is a compelling read. However, one cannot help read "A Russian Diary" without an overwhelming sense of sadness. We know how the story ends. The last entry in the diary was made in August 2006, and soon thereafter Anna Politkovskaya life ends, murdered by unknown assailants in Moscow. The profound nature of this loss ...

The Terror Dream: Fear and Fantasy in Post-9/11 America19 reviews
Susan Faludi

Metropolitan Books, 2007

It's time for all of us to wake up
This book has arrived just in time for the 2008 election. Along with the PBS program, "Bush's War", this should be required reading for all voters. We can change the future but we must understand the past. Thank you again Susan for your excellent analysis.

The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith and Politics in a Post-Religious Right America28 reviews
Jim Wallis

HarperOne, 2008

For those hoping for change
"God is not Republican"... a phrase in this book still reverberating in my mind, even though I have never declared myself in the GOP ranks. As a citizen not only of the US, but of the planet, I have always had issues with conservative america's approach to global warming, fair trade, poverty reduction, etc; issues widely overlooked and even aggressively resisted. Yet, if we claim to know and fear ...

The Lettered City (Post-Contemporary Interventions)2 reviews
Angel Rama

Duke University Press, 1996

Rama, reader of the Latin American culture
Angel Rama is peharps one of the most important critics of Latin America. The Lettered city is the perfect example. This book, written to explain the influence of the intelectuals of Latin America in the development of culture, is one of the brightest essays I've ever red. I fully recommend this book to anyone who would like to approach to Latin American culture, literature or history.

Eat Cake62 reviews
Jeanne Ray

NAL Trade, 2004

charming
I was late to find Jeanne Ray, but bought, read and enjoyed her novels in quick succession. However, this is my shining favorite. The characters, story arc and relationships are so interesting, entertaining and well-done. There is real poignancy in the main character's relationship with her daughter. Touching without being overly sentimental, just a charming story.

The Cultures of Globalization (Post-Contemporary Interventions)3 reviews
Fredric Jameson

Duke University Press, 1998

excellent book on globalization
Jameson and Miyoshi, as editors, give the reader by far one of the best text on the cultures of globalization, from media to environment, from feminism to the university, from perspectives drawn from the first world to perspectives from the third world. The work of almost all the contributors is very interesting and it will be impossible to write something on each one. However, and you must ...

Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (Post-Contemporary Interventions)7 reviews
Fredric Jameson

Duke University Press, 1991

mind stretching
Being an engineer, I prefer not to be carried away with my use of words, but this book just makes, channels the reader talk, think, again talk on it in the ways he/she is not very used to. Nevertheless, this is a good exercise in the broadest sense of the word for everybody. It should be so actively read that I can even recommend it to those who would like to lose weight.

Heart of Darkness (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism)384 reviews
Joseph Conrad

Bedford/St. Martin's, 1996

An excellent piece of epistemology!
On page 3, the narrator (not Marlow) tells us that "Marlow was not typical (if his propensity to spin yarns be excepted), and to him the meaning of an episode was not inside like a kernel but outside, enveloping the tale which brought it out only as a glow brings out a haze, in the likeness of one of these misty halos that sometimes are made visible by the spectral illumination of moonshine." ...

Modern Art: Impressionism to Post-Modernism2 reviews

Thames & Hudson, 2008

Modern Art!
I just purchased this book, it looks wonderful. It has the quality of a textbook, but it does not read like a textbook. that is to say it does not drone on and on, it reads well for those who have an interest in modern art. I cover all the periods of modern art and gives concise background to the artists and events of the perod in which the mode of art occurred. I highly reccomend this book.

The Paradox of Chinas Post-Mao Reforms (Harvard Contemporary China Series)1 review

Harvard University Press, 1999

An Excellent Account of China's Development
Mao Zedong had shaped China's political system so that it would be responsive to him. Even though the Cultural Revolution actually pitted portions of the populace against his own bureaucracy, he was always in control of this deliberate class struggle and believed the new culture that would emerge from this struggle would still be under his control. Mao's politics during the Cultural Revolution ...

Upside Down: A Primer for the Looking-Glass World26 reviews
Eduardo Galeano

Picador, 2001

ashamed to be "upside down"
Upside Down is a shocking and passionate documentation of the world's injustices that our "upside down" First World society has turned our back upon. This book will not merely evoke sympathy and remorse, but will leave you screaming for change. I found myself drawn especially to Galeano's dark humor and satirical, poetic style. Galeano's fiery language left me speechless. However, at times I did ...

Thirteen Moons: A Novel174 reviews
Charles Frazier

Random House, 2006

A story that invites you in told in rich language.
I really enjoyed this novel for both the story and for the rich prose. In Thirteen Moons, as well as in Cold Mountain, the stories of the characters are interesting and take place in front of a unique historical backdrop. However, what intrigued me in both books was the rich language. It does sound stilted at times to the modern ear (some reviewers have mentioned that), but what I believe those ...

The Post-Birthday World53 reviews
Lionel Shriver

HarperCollins, 2007

Alot To Provoke Discussions
I'll be the first to admit I thought the literary 'Sliding Doors' was simply going to be a clever device to map out a story with obvious results. I couldn't of been more wrong. This was a book I kept closing at night and found it replaying in my head like scenes form a movie. This is the first book I'd read by Shriver and found her writing both exceptional, and her observations on love and life ...

Bravo for the Marshallese: Regaining Control in a Post-Nuclear, Post-Colonial World (Case Studies on ...3 reviews
Holly M. Barker

Wadsworth Publishing, 2003

Anthropology in the public interest
Dr. Barker has told a story that most Americans never learn, and our government still tries to hide: that the U.S. tested nuclear weapons with full knowledge that the Marshallese people would be affected by the fallout and associated radiation. Using innovative anthropological oral history and linguistics analysis techniques, Dr. Barker demonstrates how the Marshallese have endured the physical, ...

Parables for the Virtual: Movement, Affect, Sensation (Post-Contemporary Interventions)2 reviews
Brian Massumi

Duke University Press, 2002

integrated brain exercise
While many philosophical texts can lay claim to a good cerebral work-out Massumi makes sure you don't forget that the body and sensation are very much part of this process. As he says "There is no thought that is not accompanied by a physical sensation of effort of agitation, (if only a knitting of the brows, a pursing of the lips, or a quickening of the heartbeat). This sensation, which may be ...

This book is written in a very easy to follow style. The concepts all come across as clearly and the illustations do. There is loads of informative content for the alternative builder who is concerned with incorporating natural building methods such as straw bale construction, cordwood masonry, and cob building into thier home. Why We're Liberals: A Political Handbook for Post-Bush America9 reviews
Eric Alterman

Viking Adult, 2008

An exceptional effort.
In this well-researched and expertly-written book, Eric Alterman succeeds in disproving and discrediting most of the usual right-wing slanders against liberal/progressive individuals and their approach to goverance. In the end, he also gives reason to hope that, in the near future, the liberal political philosophy, incorporating the belief that government is here to help the people rather than to ...

Stephen Post, Jill Neimark

Broadway, 2007

Very Well spent $15.00!
Others have provided very valuble reviews worthy of your consideration. The "fire" called for in unlimited agape love...i.e "giving" is a simple formula for a better you and a better world. There are no adverse side effects. I shall use this as an inexpensive book with extraordinary value at our Institute for Religion and Health suggest it as a universal read.
