Handbook of Psychiatric Drugs, 2008 Edition14 reviews
Lawrence J., M.D. Albers, ...

Current Clinical Strategies, 2007

beautifully simple
This book is exactly what it claims to be. It's a pocket-sized book and doesn't waste paper on any nonsense. It's very simply a list of psychotropic medications, their side effects, what they're used for, etc. It's not exactly enough for a reader to become a psychiatrist, but it's perfect for any counselor who wants to understand what their clients are taking and why.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule: A Doctor's Revolutionary Research into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical ...77 reviews
Rick Strassman MD

Park Street Press, 2001

An alternative to science?
Arthur Schopenhauer used to say that thoughts die the moment they are embodied by words ...This is even more true when we try to describe the experiences brought on by psychedelics . Unless we can write like Plato; coupled with Shakespeare's power of imagery, then the experiences we want to describe can turn into gobbledygook!! So psychedelic experiences are easily ridiculed when downloaded ...

Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior3 reviews
Carl Hart, Charles Ksir, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2008

An excellent, rational, introductory text
An excellent general overview, covering drug use and regulation, pharmacological basics, in-depth analyses of the legal drugs, tranquilizers and stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and marijuana, and comments on "a rational look at drug use." Well-documented with an abundance of relevant quotes and statistics; a rich set of references follow each chapter.

The Prescriber's Guide (Essential Psychopharmacology Series)1 review
Stephen Stahl

Cambridge University Press, 2009

indispensible for those who dispense!
This is a brilliant reference guide for anyone who prescribes psychotropic medication or works with patients who take them (ie, therapists or other physicians). With the proliferation of psychiatric medications and the glut of "package insert" information and internet misinformation this book cuts to the chase with essential clearly presented data about how to prescribe, action of the meds, half ...

Stephen M. Stahl

Cambridge University Press, 2008

Lucid and readable with very helpful color diagrams
I am a Masters Degree student in counseling and was introduced to Stahl's writings in a Counseling and Physiology course taught by an M.D. This book provides color diagrams with very lucid descriptions and explanations of how various chemical substances impact brain functioning. I bought the second edition because of the price difference but for my application this edition is more than ...

The Feeling Good Handbook99 reviews
David D. Burns

Plume, 1999

recommended by my therapist
I bought this workbook because my therapist asked me to get it to help with our sessions. So far, it's been helpful. I would suggest writing your answers in a separate notebook, though. You wouldn't want others to read your inner most thoughts.

Straight Talk about Psychiatric Medications for Kids, Third Edition2 reviews

The Guilford Press, 2008

A MUST HAVE for parents considering or using meds to treat children
Over the last 4 years, this book has become a bible for me. We have struggled to find the right combination of medications for my ADHD, Anxious, Moody, Depressed 9 year old. When you think you have it right, they grow and need new doses or the meds stop having the same results and you have to start over again. Very objective clear information with side effects and risks listed. Don't go to ...

Clear and Understandable
I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding the possible medications that may be prescribed to treat different childhood disorders. Listening to Prozac: The Landmark Book About Antidepressants and the Remaking of the Self, Revised Edition33 reviews
Peter D. Kramer

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1997

A Good Book
This is a great book to read if you want to know about Prozac. It isn't written with all the medical lingo to where you don't understand. It is written for the average person and easy to understand and comprehend. Loaded with tons of great information. Highly Recommended.

Psychopharmacology: Drugs, the Brain and Behavior10 reviews
Jerrold S. Meyer, Linda F. Quenzer

Sinauer Associates, 2004

Perhaps the best psychopharmacology text available
I used the more advanced version of this text (Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology) for a course in neuropharmacology in graduate school. This an excellent version of that text aimed at the undergraduate level--like the longer version, this text is extremely well written, clear, concise, and filled with illustrations that really "illustrate" the points made in the text. I can't recommend this ...

The Antidepressant Fact Book: What Your Doctor Won't Tell You About Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, And Luvox17 reviews

Da Capo Press, 2001

Facts everybody must know
Dr. Peter R. Breggin's work is excellent. Drugs are KILLING many people before their "natural" time to die has come. Breggin can help persons to stop killing themselves with those horrible medications. Read the book and get better without drugs.

The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology (Schatzberg, American Psychiatric ...4 reviews

American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., 2009

Textbook of psychopharmacology - must have
For graduate students, medical students, residents or professors - anyone interested in psychopharmacology should have this book! The reference section alone is worth it's weight in gold. There is simply no comparable text that is as comprehensive and readable. The reviews of both the basic science as well as the clinical literature is a remarkable feature, and is extremely well integrated.
