Better Angels9 reviews
Howard V. Hendrix

Ace Hardcover, 1999

A Hothouse of Ideas
I think I can explain the negative reviews. First, this is actually the first book of a trilogy. Second no matter how Hendrix's publishers bill him, he's writes a novels of ideas--and not 'hard sf'. So if you want is fiction about consistent plausible science then read Benford, but if you want your mind stretched read Howard.

Any Man So Daring2 reviews
Sarah A. Hoyt

Ace Hardcover, 2003

Fine Shakespeare fantasy tale
Christopher Marlowe was considered the leading playwright of the sixteenth century until he dies. His mantle after a brief vacuum passed on to William Shakespeare, who has problems coping with fame now that the Elizabethan court recognizes his talent. He knows that Marlowe's death and his own dealings with the Elven king Quicksilver were the catalyst. He deeply regrets the price feeling he ...

Alphabet of Thorn35 reviews
Patricia A. McKillip

Ace Hardcover, 2004

"She Has No Idea What Brute Force and Subtleties Can Hold a Realm Together..."
Once again Patricia McKillip crafts a wonderful story, and although I must admit that I haven't read all of her novels, I think it's safe to say that "Alphabet of Thorn" is one of her best works. Out of her many books I *have* read, this one is definitely my favourite. Her beautiful language, her startling imagery, her intricate plot, her mind-twisting ideas...all come together in this stunning ...

Absolution Gap47 reviews
Alastair Reynolds

Ace Hardcover, 2004

one of the best SF novel's I've read
Reynolds brings his trilogy to an end in this brilliant huge story tying in all of the subplots of the previous three books. I cannot understand what the seemingly widespread problem is with some readers and the end of this book. IMHO, Reynolds very much described the who, where and why of the inhibitors throughout the entire series, and if you were awake for the end of the last book,'absolution ...

Adept: Death of an Adept (Kurtz, Katherine. Adept, Bk. 5.)8 reviews
Katherine Kurtz, Deborah Turner Harris

Ace Hardcover, 1996

A Great Followup
I started reading the Adept because K. Kurtz wrote it and I liked her Deryni series. I had no idea how good it was. Since that first book, I have continued to read and be impressed. Death of an Adept keeps the standard of the Adept series has high as ever. It is a fitting end to the series of events that started in book 1. I loved it. I usually get bored with book series after awhile, but ...

Angelica37 reviews
Sharon Shinn

Ace Hardcover, 2003

I didn't want it to end
Recently I re-read Archangel, which I'd first read years ago, and I'd forgotten what a great book it is, so I was delighted to discover that Sharon Shinn had since written other books in the Samaria series. I thought the chronologically later books in the series (Jovah's Angel, The Alleluia Files) were well written, but they didn't appeal to my taste as much, since they involved the technology ...

Accelerando78 reviews
Charles Stross

Ace Hardcover, 2005

The Singularity Is Coming
Accelerando (2005) is a standalone SF novel. It is set in the near future during the meltdown of nation states and capitalism. The EU has self-disorganized into the European Confederacy and the United States is almost bankrupt. And the underground economy is taking over the world. In this novel, Manfred Macx is a genius who is patenting lots of primal ideas and assigning the rights to ...

All The Bells on Earth12 reviews
James P. Blaylock

Ace Hardcover, 1995

Beware the bluebird of happiness
This is one of Blaylock's best and it would be an excellent place to start if you're not familiar with this author. The plotting is tighter than in most of Blaylock's books, so the story is intricate and intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages, and the ending is particularly nice. It is a fantasy tale in a contemporary setting, with somewhat of a monkey's paw concept driving the ...

The Book of Atrix Wolfe30 reviews
Patricia A. McKillip

Ace Hardcover, 1995

I'm left speechless
Whenever I read a McKillip book I feel like I did when I was a kid, and magic really exists in the world. I get sad over the next week as reality re-asserts itself around me. Like a first love, it's something I cherish, that her books can evoke these feelings of wonder in me. I've never read an author that writes like this save her. If you don't know what I'm talking about, buy ANY of her ...

The Callahan Touch6 reviews
Spider Robinson

Ace Hardcover, 1993

Really fun, light SF
I seem to have started in the middle of this series. First, I read Callahan's Legacy because it was the only one my library had. Then, I found this book in my local used bookstore. So, not only am I out of order, but I'm reading backwards. But I don't really think that matters. I'm still really enjoying this series from Spider Robinson--the stories of a bunch of really strange folks that hang ...

Carol for Another Christmas3 reviews
Elizabeth Ann Scarborough

Ace Hardcover, 1996

Dickens would love this update of "A Christmas Carol"!!
Fresh and inventive, this book kept me reading as if I hadn't ever read the original on which it's based. I thought I knew what was going to happen, but in Scarborough's hands, the retelling of the familiar tale is brand-new and wonderfully funny and touching. Definitely a fable for the computer age! Ms. Scarborough is a fabulous writer and I plan to read a lot more of her books!

Bloodrights5 reviews
N. Lee Wood

Ace Hardcover, 1999

Always did like happy endings
This is the second N. Lee Wood book I have read, the other being Looking for the Mahdi. Both were excellent. There was good reason for that New Yorks Time Notable review. Bloodrights is a book I found hilarious, especially the last chapter, too bad it wouldn't make sense without the rest of the book. Antonya is a wonderful heroine, even if she gets a bit confused in the middle. Wood likes ...

Channeling Cleopatra11 reviews
Elizabeth Ann Scarborough

Ace Hardcover, 2002

Intriguing idea; fascinating development
What if you could pick any person from history and, through the computerized infusion of their DNA, receive their personality - their soul, for a better word - to share your body? When a young scientist named Tsering's wife - Chime - died, he developed techology that transferred her DNA (which, as it turns out contains not only the genetic structure of a person, but their personality as well) ...

Callahan's Lady8 reviews
Spider Robinson

Ace Hardcover, 1989

Wonderfully bawdy sci-fi romp with just enough seriousness
At the urging of my girlfriend I just read "Callahan's Lady" and "Lady Slings the Booze," even though I'd not thought much of Spider Robinson's "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon." I am VERY glad I listened to her. In addition to the wonderfully atrocious puns, Robinson has created what could be the nicest place on Earth to go to for escape: Lady Sally's House. In addition to the witty and good-taste ...

Bio Of An Ogre2 reviews
Piers Anthony

The life of a writer is not as boreing as we have thought.
The life of a writer is not as boreing as we have thought. In his autobiography "Bio of an Ogre" Piers Anthony puts his own special twist and spin on things. By writing his own story he managed to get the whole story out in a style unique only to him. He depicts his story starting with his first memories, and finally ending just after his fiftieth year. The Caterpillar's Question4 reviews
P. Anthony

Ace Hardcover, 1992

A Great Ride for the Imagination
As an adolescent I got this book from the library many times. I loved it! And now as a teacher I seek to have this book in my classroom. The imagery in the story is fantastic. The narration is extremely descriptive; you get the feeling you're there with them. While reading this book, one of my favorite elements was the relationship that develops between Tappy and Jack. I think that the ...
