Searching for and Maintaining Peace: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart 7 reviews Jacques Philippe
Alba House, 2002
Amazing Little Book. I have had Father Jacques Philippe's books recommended to me on a number of occasions and by a number of different people. I have picked up the four I can find that are available in English. The title of this book, Searching for and Maintaining Peace, just grabbed my attention and had to be read first. The subtitle of this book is: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart, yet for a small book of 110 ...

Way to Happiness: An Inspiring Guide to Peace, Hope and Contentment 7 reviews Fulton J. Sheen
Alba House, 1997
Wonderful, inspirational book, no matter what your faith! I recently became a fan of Fulton Sheen after seeing an old broadcast from the 1960's. This book only enhanced my warm feelings toward this witty and hilarious archbishop. If you have never read anything by, or even heard of this man, I would definitely recommend this as a first reading. It's short, but the message within these lines speak volumes.

Marie of the Trinity tells many stories about Therese not recorded elsewhere, and the study of her relationship with Therese is itself endlessly fascinating. Introduction to the Devout Life 30 reviews De Sales, Saint Francis
Alba House, 1992
Truly a useful introduction! I sought out this book on the advice of a priest and was not expecting the book to as useful as it was! I was immediately drawn into the book as it explained how a devotional life can be integrated into any state of life. I especially was thankful of the effort de Sales puts into explaining what is proper for one to do according to their vocation in life. Though I am Catholic, a Pentecostal ...

Mystical Language of Icons 8 reviews Solrunn Nes
Alba House, 2000
Informative and Inspirational I read "The Language of Icons" with the intention of learning more about the mode of religious art most characteristic of Eastern Christianity. The book far exceeded my expectations. I learned more about icons than I ever would have hoped. The reproductions of representative icons were beautiful and luminous. Moreover, the text was deeply spiritual and inspiring. The reader is drawn to ...

The Christian Faith in the Doctrinal Documents of the Catholic Church 5 reviews J. Neuner, J. Dupuis
Alba House, 1983
Heart of Christian Tradition This is a must for the serious student of Christian theology and history. It contains the critical 'snippets' from counciliar and papal documents of the earliest times to today. The book has the Roman Catholic Church's official responses to problems; from the heresies we encountered in the Patristic Age, to the Reformation, to today's social justice issues. In both spirit and form, it is ...

Christian Community Bible: Catholic Pastoral Edition 8 reviews
Alba House, 1999
Excellent Bible Translation. As a librarian I frequently encounter new versions of the bible that are usually word for word translations that never attempt to translate the original languages into meaningful and understandable english. The Christian Community Bible is a rare exception. Its clear and simple English is very enlightening and its introductions and notes are nothing short of a mini commentary that reveals the ...

Could You Ever Come Back to the Catholic Church? 6 reviews Lorene Hanley Duquin
Alba House, 1994
Lost After Vatican II? This book provided many answers to questions I've had as I've researched my Catholic faith. In my college years and for some time after, I lived as a distant Catholic--not because I had bad experiences, but because I didn't understand or know the Church's position on many issues. This book was a great start. I quickly found I was hanging up on erroneous, mainstream perceptions that really ...

Hooked on Philosophy: Thomas Aquinas Made Easy 4 reviews Robert A., Ph.D. O'Donnell
Alba House, 1995
Clear and easily accessible presentation of profound ideas. I have over a dozen books presenting the Realist philosophy as developed by Aquinas. This is the one I would recommend for a first introduction. Yet, ODonnell's presentation is so enlightening that I reread it. Also, includes interesting discussion of Einstien's theory of relativity. First-rate book.

Enjoy the Lord: A Path to Contemplation 2 reviews John T. Catoir
Alba House, 1989
Flawlessly written book. I love this book. Father John Catoir writes in a simple easy to understand way which is perfect for someone who wants to solidify his knowledge and understanding of entering into a proper and healthy spiritual life and relationship with God. He is the right kind of Roman Catholic Priest, who engenders the kind of attitude that is sorely missing in many of our clergy. He's down to earth and ...

Could You Ever Become a Catholic Priest? 2 reviews Christopher J. Duquin, Lorene Hanley Duquin
Alba House, 1998
This really helps you answer those very tough questions! I was very happy to finally find a book that could help me (and anyone else) discern the priesthood. The authors simply lay out the facts, supported by seminarians, priests, and laity, but never push you one way or the other. I found that this book helps you process the many questions swirling in your mind about discernment and come to your own conclusions. I would recommend this book to ...

Brother Francis of Assisi 2 reviews Ignacio Larranaga
Alba House, 2004
Insightful and inspirational This is awesome because it does not only tell the story of Saint Francis' life, but it also looks at what may be happening internally to the young Saint. The insights into what would compel a man to act as Francis is inspiring. Being able to trace the transformation of his heart helps me to believe that I too can become a saint since I can find similar movements in soul through my growth as a ...

A Heart That Knew No Bounds: The Life and Mission of Saint Marcellin Champagnat 2 reviews Sean D. Sammon
Alba House, 2000
A Down to Earth Saint Sean Sammon's short biography of St. Marcellin Champagnat is definitely worth reading for anyone who is interested in the life of the Catholic Church and the people they call "Saints". Sammon is able to describe, in a very uncomplicated way, the historical, sociological and theological background of this man who was born the same year as the French Revolution. Marcellin Champagnat started his ...

One of the Best Books on Christology Fr. Roch Kereszty, O.Cist., a Catholic priest and a professor of theology at the University of Dallas (and one of my professors) has written an excellent book on the theology of Jesus Christ. The book has three parts. The Classics of Catholic Spirituality 2 reviews Peter J. Cameron
Alba House, 1996
very handy for guidance in reading Catholic spirituality Great book. It covers 14 Catholic classics including St Francis, St Augustine, St John of the Cross, St Teresa of Avila, .......and gives about an 8 page summary of each. I can then go and read the full classic after knowing what I am in for so to speak. I find that some books that are good for some are not good for you and though I am positive that we all need to read these classics at some ...
