Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally 17 reviews John M. Van de Walle
Allyn & Bacon, 2006
Math teacher must have! This was a required text for a M.Ed. class. The practices in this book are almost perfectly aligned with Massachusetts frameworks and the Connnected Math Project (CMP) text used by my district (Lowell). This book is very rich with lesson plan fodder and takes pains to explain the 'why' of CMP as well as the how. I'll be relying on this book for years to come.

Educational Psychology (with MyLabSchool) (10th Edition) (MyLabSchool Series) 8 reviews Anita Woolfolk
Allyn & Bacon, 2006
Filled with practicality Although I did not use the 10th edition due that it was delivered to a neighbor, I borrowed a 9th edition that is similar. It was an excellent resource for teaching. It has practical guidelines for class prep, updated guidelines for students with disabilities and much much more. I highly recommend this book for teachers of all levels. You may not be taking this class; Educational Psychology, ...

Essentials of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach (7th Edition) (MySocLab Series) 15 reviews James M. Henslin
Allyn & Bacon, 2006
Sociology review I would like everyone to know that for a class that calls for the latest edition, which is usually hundreds of dollars, they can easily get an A with an older edition. I have proved it with this book. Even though the teacher said I would have a hard time I found everything where it was supposed to be maybe a page or two off but it was all there. This is a great book even if you are not taking a ...

Social Problems (11th Edition) 2 reviews D. Stanley Eitzen, Maxine Baca Zinn, ...
Allyn & Bacon, 2008
One of the best social problems textbook around! James Henslin's Social Problems is an excellent textbook for students who want to learn more about social problems in the U.S. Henslin divided his book into three parts. First, an overview of the problem. Henslin used the three major sociological theories: symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and conflict theory to interpret the significance of the problem. He used all of the theories without ...

Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition) 125 reviews Robert B. Cialdini
Allyn & Bacon, 2008
Science of Compliance - Extremely Important and Useful Book This is one of my favorite social psychology books. It is about compliance. It is about influencing others.
It is probably one of the most important works available to the general public regarding the science of compliance. How to get customers, counterparties in negotiation, etc. to be primed to act in a targeted way (i.e., to get them to say "Yes", or to do something you want, etc.).

Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach (9th Edition) (MySocLab Series) 5 reviews James M. Henslin
Allyn & Bacon, 2007
Interesting and Lively Admittedly I haven't read a lot of sociology textbooks, but this one is quite good. Every chapter has real-life examples (and many of the author's own experiences), so it not only makes you know the theory but also feel it at work in our societies, although the author writes quite a lot of his own feelings (it's dead obvious that he wants to change the world), which I don't know if it's a good ...

Infants, Children, and Adolescents (6th Edition) (MyDevelopmentLab Series) Laura E. Berk
Allyn & Bacon, 2007
Berk’s signature storytelling style invites students to actively learn beside the text’s “characters” who share their influential experiences and developmental milestones. Students are provided with an exceptionally clear and coherent understanding of child development, emphasizing the interrelatedness of all domains—physical, cognitive, emotional, and social—throughout the text narrative and in special features. ...

Family Therapy: Concepts & Methods (8th Edition) 2 reviews Michael P. Nichols, Richard C Schwartz
Allyn & Bacon, 2007
"The Standard Text" for Family Therapy Nichols work, now in the 8th edition, is a seminal work in family therapy. This new edition, has some extra-features, which make it even more desireable than the 7th. It is more sympathetic to the postmodern therapies (solutions-focused, narrative), which I either practice or have been heavily influenced by. Nichols work is a great way to "break in" to this field as he survey the field, its ...

Conformity and Conflict: Readings in Cultural Anthropology (13th Edition) (MyAnthroKit Series) 6 reviews James W. Spradley Late, David W. McCurdy
Allyn & Bacon, 2008
Excellent collection, a standard in anthro -- and the 12th is DIFFERENT from the11th I've used this collection off and on for years in teaching Introduction to Cultural Anthropology. It's a great book, a real standard in anthropology. Honestly, I think the relevance and quality of the essays varies from edition to edition. I liked the 11th more than the 12th. Sometimes a 'favorite' essay gets replaced; and then in the next edition it is returned. Go figure.
I note that ...

Great Book I had to use this book for my intro to psychology class. I planned on just skimming it to find the answeres, but I ended up reading it all. It is a great book with great stories. It is easy of follow and the definition of new words are listed on the side of the page, not in the back of the book like most textbooks. Great Book!
