Kissing Kin (The Williamsburg Novels) (The Williamsburg Novels)2 reviews
Elswyth Thane

Amereon Ltd, 1948

Distant relations
I discovered this book largely because the staircase in the local public library deposits browsers in the T section of fiction, and it appealed to me as a dark, yet not hopelessly grim, novel of WWI. As a Williamsburg novel, _Kissing Kin_ provides a good deal of exposition needed to get from _The Light Heart_ to _This Was Tomorrow_, but it is certainly the darkest of the series, and the happy ...

Jan Mitchell

This book occupies a place of honor on my bookshelf
You don't get more authentic than this book when it comes to German cooking. You can definitely gain some weight reading this book!

The Light Heart6 reviews
Elswyth Thane

Amereon Ltd, 1980

Two Loves Worth Waiting For...
When Phoebe Sprague discovers that love may not mean the bland affection evoked by dependable, familiar, unexciting Miles Day, but rather the effervescent, shameless, delirious passion inspired by the revelation that is Oliver Campion, life enters a maze she never imagined. Endlessly, hopelessly separated by previous entanglements, Phoebe and Oliver weave in and out of each other's lives through ...

Gone to Texas1 review
Forrest Carter

Amereon Ltd, 1976

Great book for every level of reader!
This book is ideal for all types of readers. After seeing the length of the book, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the characters were developed. I only wish I had read the book before I watched the movie. I couldn't help but picture Clint Eastwood as Josey Wales. I wonder how I would have pictured the main character had I not seen the movie. Oh well, the book was great anyway

Alexander Botts: Great Stories from the Saturday Evening Post4 reviews
William Hazlett Upson

Amereon Ltd, 1978

This is a very funny book about A. Botts salesman
I read these stories as a child in the 50's and 60's in theSaturday Evening Post. I ordered this collection and they are funnierthan I remembered them. Since I got the book in June of 1999, about 10 friends have read the book and all loved it. Many people will start laughing out loud. One of the best series of short stories I have ever read. If you read this book, let me know what you think.

Great Gatsby1 review
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Amereon Ltd, 1925

Maybe Gatsby wasn't great, but the story is...
There is a reason why this is required reading in advanced literature classes throughout the country. This is without a doubt one of the best tales ever told. It should be used as an example to any aspiring writer of what great writing can be. The thing that makes it so great is Fitzgerald's ability to formulate characters, both large and small, and his ability to have them interact in a ...

A must read.
This is just quite simply one of the most romantic, satisfying, and wonderful books that I have ever read.

Wisdom of the Sands1 review
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Amereon Ltd, 2003

Saint-Exupery's greatest book
"The Wisdom of the Sands" is a collection of Saint-Exupery's very personal reflections published posthumously as a series of parables. The rhythm of his lonely, compassionate, and mystical voice in this work enraptured me. The work concludes with the most profound and moving essay on friendship that I have ever read, one that far transcends his well-known fable "The Little Prince." His ...

A Town Like Alice63 reviews
Nevil Shute

Amereon Ltd, 1989

Straight to the Moon, Alice...
When is a love story not a romance novel? When is a book about Japanese POWs not a book about war? When it's A Town Like Alice. I've been a fan since seeing the Masterpiece Theater version about 20 years ago (after which I had to immediately run out and buy the book. There are lots of reviews posted here, so we don't need another rehash of the plot. Suffice it to say, if you are NOT a romantic, ...

This Was Tomorrow2 reviews
Elswyth Thane

Amereon Ltd, 1980

This Was Tomorrow
This is the sixth book in a series of books called the Williamsburg novels. I have been reading and re-reading this series of 7 books for over 50 years. They are my all time favorite books. Each book deals with a war or pre-war action (except the war of 1812) in which the US has taken part from the Revolutionary War (Dawn's Early Light) to the Civil War (Yankee Stranger) to the Homing with is ...

Genghis Khan: Emperor of All Men10 reviews
Harold Lamb

Amereon Ltd, 1986

A swashbuckling historical adventure
Lamb's histories all read more like historical fiction. He piques your interest and keeps it from the opening page to the very end. Although not a scholarly study of the Great Khan, the book informs as well as entertains.

Arabella19 reviews
Georgette Heyer

Amereon Ltd, 1971

Light romance, with a lot of humourous moments
Another Heyer favorite of mine (of which I have many!LOL), this story chronicles the escapades of Arabella. She is the eldest daughter of a vicar in the countryside, with 7 other siblings, and she has just received notice from her godmother in London that she will be sponsoring her coming out into polite society. She is one of Heyer's younger heroines, being only 17, but she is a very delightful ...

Grand Sophy42 reviews
Georgette Heyer

Amereon Ltd, 1972

Sophy is Grand
This is one of the best of Georgette Heyer's novels. For anyone unfamiliar with her works, she is Jane Austen with an even strong sense of the absurd and the wit to see through people's pretensions. Sophy is the "not-so-little any more" niece of Lady Ombersley, whose arrival promptly sets the family's well ordered world on its ear. Her cousin, Charles, is at first infuriated and then gradually ...

Psycho48 reviews
Robert Bloch

Amereon Ltd, 1984

Great book that provided the basis for a great film.
"Psycho" is a brilliant film, and deserves its permanent status as a classic. But, as with "The Shining," I'm sick of the dismissive attitude towards the source material. Even true-crime writer Harold Schechter, an expert in pop culture and someone who should be capable of fully appreciating Robert Bloch's novel, demeans Bloch's actual accomplishment by referring to it as "a clever but minor ...

How Green Was My Valley50 reviews
Richard Llewellyn

Amereon Ltd, 1985

Welsh Gem
The title say it all. A delightful book, allowing the reader to live that life in the little coal mining town of the mid 1900's. Sad & joyous - just as life is!

Most Secret1 review
Nevil Shute

Amereon Ltd, 1975

A rollicking good tale of warfare and derring-do
I've read it many, many times. The characters are very believable (you will feel as though you have met people like them), and the suspense buildup is managed brilliantly. The ending, though poignant, is superb. About as good a war tale as you can get -- the plot is fast-paced, always developing. No wasted words. This book proves that good war tales can be told without lasping into profanity ...

Twilight in the Forbidden City7 reviews
Reginald Fleming Johnston

Amereon Ltd, 1995

Twilight, the beginning of an end.
Mr. Johnson's work romanticizes the truth behind the opulence that existed within the Forbidden City. The vislual feast presented in the book differed much from what was provided in the film, but, both touched upon the essence of what the author suggested; there was granduer, there was, glitter, and, there was truth in what the author saw. The traumatic changes in the social order of the day ...

Best Loved Dog Stories of Albert Payson Terhune3 reviews
Albert Payson Terhune

Amereon Ltd, 1987

This is a book to be shared from generation to generation.
I first read Lad: A Dog when I was a 13-year-old, and then I read every book by Albert Payson Terhune that I could find. Now, I am ordering it for my granddaughter. The author pulls the reader into a life filled with the loyalty, happiness, sadness, and absolute joy that comes with the love of a dog. There is such richness in Terhune's stories and the values he shares.

Steppenwolf131 reviews
Hermann Hesse

Amereon Ltd, 1983

The Man Who Understood
There are people out there, reading this review now, who have gone thru life feeling as though no one has ever understood them. Some of those people will read this book, 'Steppenwolf', & it will hit them like a bolt(& some wont like it at all). Not only will a few of them feel as though they have finally been understood, but they might feel as though at last they can begin to understand ...
