Discover Your Own Prophetic Imagination
Brueggemann has become one of my favorites. His straight forward dealing with the challenges of ministry is right on target and at the same time inspiring. His reality check approach is refreshing. His treatment of the inspirational is a solid reminder to all about why we're even involved in conversations of spirit and religion. If you have questions / concerns about the practice of theology, ...

N. T. Wright
Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 2003
Brings Unity to History, Philosophy & Theology
N.T. Wright recovers the original traction that the idea of resurrection has upon the mind by his masterful integration of many fields of study. Resurrection is not merely the idea of life after death, but the very overthow of death. Comparing the different concepts of resurrection surrounding the resurrection of Jesus Christ, he avoids anachronistic traps of reading one age upon another. ...

A word from the wise.
This book gave me brilliant insight into freindships and relationship building. It is a real privaledge to be able to learn from Alan McGinnis the keys to good frindships. These are tried and proved priciples and I thought the value placed on true fiendship and the practical examples were inspiring and helpful. Using Jesus was not over the top as it gave us insight into someone most people ...

Must read!
If you've read, "Generation to Generation" by Edwin Friedman or are familiar with "family systems theory" you'll understand of the value of "Creating a healthier Church". Richardson playfully compares two Churches "Valley view" and "Third Church" to juxtapose healthy Churches and dysfunctional Churches. The main ideas in the book: How well do the people in a system handle two types of anxiety ...

Masterpiece
It is difficult to speak of this work without over selling. Serious Bible students and theologians alike must read Wright's work. He does not simply rehash old theories; he steps out with fresh insight and boldly states his positions without apology. He masterfully builds his case. The first 144 pages are spent on the subject of epistemology. After he has thoroughly introduced you to this ...
Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Praying with Christ
In this beautiful little book, Bonhoeffer guides the Christian to the Scriptures for lessons in how to pray. He affirms that the Lord's Prayer is the primary prayer of the Christian, which he asserts contains every prayer that a Christian ought to pray. Bonhoeffer also makes a startling but wise claim that jolts us out of the narrowness of our focus in prayer: "The richness of the Word of God ...
Good Grief

Granger E. Westberg

Simple, Succinct, and Invaluable Resource for Grief Recovery
I was given this book when my oldest brother was killed in 1995. When your heart is broken and your psyche is reeling from shock, pain, disbelief, and loss, it is too much to fathom to try to read a long, involved bunch of psychobabble. Granger Westberg's Good Grief is an easy read and truly confirms that the stages of grief through which one travels are, indeed, normal. He also tells you that ...
Grieving the Death of a Mother

Very realistic and thorough
After my mother's death on Christmas morning 2007, I purchased this book. It is filled with many scenarios (unexpected death, accidents, holidays, dysfunctional relationships) related to the death of a mother. I believe this book is a great place to start working on the process of grieving. The author is realistic and direct.

Excellent Companion to Bible for Both Child and Adult!
This is definitely a worthy purchase if you have a child and as well if you (admit it) still get mixed up a bit with Middle East geography, especially when it comes to what an area was called years ago and what its present-day name is. When you read a passage to your child, show him with this each time where that scripture was taking place at that time period (the atlas shows name changes and ...
Martin Luther's Basic Theological Writings (w/ CD-ROM)

The Power and the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24)
This is an incredible volume and, in my opinion, a better introduction to Luther than "Selections From His Writings". It contains a number of his better-known works including the infinitely worthy "Smaller Catechism," the infamous "95 Theses," and the thesis chapters from his personal favorite, "The Bondage of the Will." Alongside these monumental works are set lesser-known, but equally ...

Read the new edition!
The new edition of Bonhoeffer's ETHICS (Fortress Press 2005)is completely re-arranged, newly translated, full of helpful notes, and includes an introduction and a commentary by the editors. These help explain Bonhoeffer's ethical thinking and his radical critique of Nazi policies. The text and the commentary help the careful reader understand Bonhoeffer's rationale for working in the conspiracy ...

THE MESSAGE OF THE PSALMS
I was loaned this book at a very difficult time in my life. I could no longer trust a God who had allowed my son to die. But by no longer conversing with God, I also lost my source of sustenance and renewal. This book describes how the Psalms document the changes/seasons of a believing community's life of faith: a movement of faith from orientation to disorientation to a new orientation. It ...
Bringing Out the Best in People: How to Enjoy Helping Others Excel

Alan Loy McGinnis
Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 1985
Best book on motivation
I have read and re-read this book at least three times in the past 10 years, actively applying the steps to my own experiences. It is very insightful into human nature and its many illustrations from real life, including well-known people, along with its appeal to strong values, support its authenticity as a practical guide to helping those around you and, in the process, helping yourself.
Antagonists in the Church: How to Identify and Deal With Destructive Conflict

Kenneth C. Haugk

Helps you keep your sanity when undermined
I attended an outreach conference. This book was the first to sell out on the book table. Pastors think they are called to keep everyone happy. They have no idea about dysfunctional antagonists who first put you on a pedestal and then tear you down later when you somehow fail them and their agendae. Haugk counsels church leaders not to be paranoid, but to trust their sixth sense, too. ...
The Crucified God: The Cross of Christ As the Foundation and Criticism of Christian Theology

Jurgen Moltmann

Entering into the Passion of This World
Moltmann wrote the Crucified God (1974, English translation) in reaction to certain (specifically N. American) misunderstandings of his earlier work, Theology of Hope (1965). Moltmann's chief concern in The Crucified God was to rescue the hope of the resurrection from any confusion with the officially optimistic culture of modern capitalist society. He does this by reminding his audience that ...

A Fun Resource
The Lutheran Handbook has been a smashing success for it's publisher, Augsburg Fortress, and for good reason. It is funny, concise, thorough and well-organized. I am a Lutheran pastor and we have used this book as the basis for both adult education studies and confirmation classes. People new to the Lutheran tradition find it an informative and quick read and always appreciate borrowing the ...

Water, Come Down! The day you were baptized
What fabulous book. This is the best and one of the only books I have seen on infant baptism! The illustrations are lovely and colorful and is a wonderful book to start reading to your child at any age. It is easily adaptable to an infant/toddler and as your child gets older, they will have fun reading it and remembering the book when they see other children being baptized. Wonderful book.
Jesus and Nonviolence: A Third Way (Facets)

Walter Wink

One of The Best of Walter Wink
This short book is a very good introduction to Analytic/Historic Christianity, that movement which considers the life of first-century, Roman-dominated faithfuls, their language and its often-flawed translation[s]. In other works Wink may seem obscure, but not here. His language is precise, his ideas very clear, his logic as compelling as always; it is just enough. This book is a very good ...

Strength to Do Something requires the power and wisdom of love...
In 1983 I entered teaching in West Virginia and received this book as a present from one of my teachers. In two years I moved to South Central to teach at 93rd Street School then into the Salinas valley and now in Oxnard. It has proved itself to be of great use to a teacher. I say this by way of explaining that as an elementary teacher, one working with a variety of settings, children, cultures, ...
