Jim Kjelgaard

Bantam Skylark Book, 1985

Great Outdoor Adventure Reading!!!
I first read this book when I was in 5th Grade. I have always been interested in the Outdoors. This book guides us through an extraordinary adventure with a boy, his older friend, their dogs and a mean old Mountain Lion which they all hunt. It's filled with suspense, and will keep anyone glued to the book. Excellent Read! You'll most likely have to check it out at the library. It's tough to find!

The Laughing Policeman1 review
Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo

Bantam Book, 1974

Don't Miss This Series!
I have only recently discovered the Swedish mystery writers and their police procedurals, and now I am addicted! Like author Helene Tursten and her Inspector Huss mysteries, Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo are simply the best at this genre. I began with "The Laughing Policeman" and couldn't put it down. The story keeps one riveted, plus it ends masterfully. As soon as I write this review, I plan to ...

Pocketful of Fun1 review
Harold Hart

Bantam book, 1963

A book of excellent puzzles, some are easy, some are hard
This book contains some very difficult puzzles. When I opened the book, the first thing I saw was an illustration with three Swiss maids where each had a can of milk. One can has a dent in it, another maid weighed hers in the house they are standing next to and the third weighed hers at the top of the mountain. The question then is, "Which can contains the most milk?" The answer is the one who ...

Invasion They're Coming!1 review
Paul Carell

Bantam Book, 1973

Important work on invasion at Normandy
"Invasion- They're Coming!" is a look at D-Day and the battle for Normandy from the German perspective. How did those manning the Atlantic Wall feel looking out upon a fleet the size the world has never seen before or since? Wave upon wave of bombers pounded them and then the unnerving of the naval shelling. Their remembrances, conversations and fear put you there amongst the din and dust with ...

I Never Loved Your Mind1 review

Bantam Book, 1971

Dark teenage crushes
I Never Loved Your Mind follows Dewey who has just dropped out of high school. His first week at work he notices Yvette, who has a nice body, is a vegetarian, and steals things. Throughout the rest of the book he chases her. She seems at times to be falling in love but most of the time seems to dislike him very much because he eats meat and because of all the lifestyle and viewpoint ...

Robert M Pirsig

Bantam New Age Book, 1982

About this book
I re-read this book after about 15 years and enjoyed it just as much as the first time, but I got something different out of it this time too. This book has a great calming effect on me. It's so interesting on so many subjects, and so accesssible. This is such a relevent read.

Castle in the Attic audiotape
This was an excellent classroom tool. The voice was articulate and it brought the book to life as the children listened.

Phineas1 review
John Knowles

A Bantam Book, 1969

Six Short Stories
A typical John Knowles writing. This book contains 6 short stories of different characters, each filled with its own events and plots. I want to note that this book is not completely about Phineas, the character in A Seperate Peace. He's in one of the six stories, alright, but it's just another brief summary of what happend in A Seperate Peace. The table of contents: 1. A Turn with the Sun ...

The Pearl1 review
John Steinbeck

Bantam Book, 1962

A lucky discovery?
Kino, his wife Juana, and their baby son Coyotito, live a simple life in an ocean-side village in Mexico. Kino pearl-dives for a living. He and his family are native people of the original Aztec stock. Life for them is not perfect, indeed, the injustice of subjugation to the Spanish sometimes burns fierce in their hearts, but much of the time their existance in their small brush hut is sweet. ...

The Day of the Locust43 reviews
nathanael West

Bantam Book, 1975

Wonderful trip through a lost world...
Carl Melcher Goes to Vietnam The fact that The Day of the Locust was published in 1939, would, I thought, make it a bit too dated or old-fashioned to enjoy. Happily, I was wrong. Nathanael West's novel is like a well-oiled and maintained Disney ride, guaranteed to educate, amuse and thrill. We climb in the car and enter a tunnel into a world that is, of course, gone forever. Truly an insider's ...

The Tombs of Atuan106 reviews
Ursula K. Le Guin

Bantam Book, 1975

It's the ways this is different that make it special
This is wonderful novel, but it's not for everyone. A reviewer below mentioned this being a "swords and sorcery" novel. That's dead wrong, though. There's not a sword to be found in it, really. There is magic, of course, but it manifests itself in a very different way and at a very different tempo than true "swords and sorcery" novels. What I love about this are the very things that some ...
