One of Bova's Best Books
Ben Bova has written a masterful novel about the first humans to explore the planet Mars. Jamie Waterman is a young half-Navajo geologist who dreams of exploring Mars. Due to an illness, Jamie is bumped up to the first team that is going to Mars. Also aboard are Joanna Brumado, a Brazilian biologist; Mikhail Vosnesensky, a Russian and overall mission commander; Ilona Malater, an Israeli ...

When Harlie Was One : Release 2.012 reviews
David Gerrold

Bantam Spectra, 1988

When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One (Release 2.0)
I looked for a long time for "When Harlie Was Two" (a title promised in the book "When Harlie Was One"). Never found it. There was a good reason! That book was never written. I finally found it at Worldcon 63 (Noreascon 4) in the huckster's room where I ran across the author himself at a booth selling "When Harlie Was One (Release 2.0)". It may be out of print, but it is not ...

The Paladin of the Night (Rose of the Prophet, Book. 2)6 reviews
Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman

Bantam Spectra, 1989

Best in the trilogy
Too bad this book is currently out of print.. I bought a used copy after reading the first. This is a great book, don't miss it. I especially like Pukah's role in this as he finally triumphs over himself :) Anyway, I recommend reading the Darksword trilogy and especially 'The Death Gate Cycle' by these same authors.

The Hand of Chaos (Death Gate Cycle, Book 5)21 reviews
Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman

Bantam Spectra, 1993

The Hand of Chaos - clever title now that I think about it....
The Hand of Chaos - Book Five of Seven in the Death Gate Cycle series. This book is another excellent addition to the series, and also necessary to read, no matter what other people say. It is very action packed, and brings back some of my favorite characters (Ex: Bane, Hugh the Hand (shocker...I know!)and Iridal). The book does have its shortcomings, but otherwise it is very good. This ...

A Canticle for Leibowitz229 reviews
Walter M. Miller Jr.

Bantam Spectra, 1984

One of the great post apocalyptic novels
If a man were only to write one novel in his lifetime, there are very few that could top this. This is a very disturbing, funny, and angry piece of writing. It takes place somewhere in the Utah high desert in the aftermath of a nuclear war. The abbey in the Utah desert preserves what is left of the "pre-deluge" knowledge of mankind and the technological secrets that led to the apocalypse of a ...

Neal Stephenson

Bantam Spectra, 1992

Brain BIOS
I liked the linking of how a human brain works and how a computer works. There has to be some hardware/software wired a birth to create the different personalities and to allow consciousness to develop. A funny exciting read.

House Atreides (Dune: House Trilogy, Book 1)414 reviews
Brian Herbert, Kevin Anderson

Bantam Spectra, 1999

Good Detail
This book has good detail and is a great continuation of the Dune saga, but in reverse since it is Prequel in nature. I think this does the magnificent world of Dune justice because it is so rich in detail and the plots//premises are so interesting. This particular installment of the new series is focused on the Atreides family but we still learn a lot about other Dune factors such as the ...

The Bohr Maker3 reviews
Linda Nagata

Bantam Books (Spectra), 1995

Simply Amazing.
My favorite authors include Larry Niven, Neal Stephenson, and Linda Nagata. Actually, the last few books by Neal (and I have autographed copies) have been a distinct disappointments. But in all the mass-market books that I have been able to locate, Linda Nagata has consistently written excellent work. This is the second in the Nanotech series (w/Tech Heaven, Deception Well, and Vast), and ...

If at Faust You Don't Succeed4 reviews
Roger Zelazny, Robert Sheckley

Bantam Spectra, 1994

The humors of heaven 's busybees and hell's busybees
8/13/01 I have read both Zelazny's and Sheckley's books:"If At Faust You Don't Succeed"(timed in the middle ages with the wrong apothecary being kidnapped by the evil forces in error) and "Bring Me The Head Of Prince Charming", where body parts of the dead, are used to reconstruct a Prince (using legs of a coward who'd run away during a battle which gave the legs the magic of 'speed').They had ...
