Literature Brings History Alive
It is often literature which brings the study of history alive for students. Never was that observation more true than a reading of this marvelous book illustrates. From the first quote by Wittgenstein,to the concluding story The Name, by Aharon Megged, the narratives contained in this collection give faces to history. The thematic organization of the stories allows the teacher to pick and ...

"Essential Writings" should be "Essential Reading!"
For years I've been looking for a book that could give me some insight into Rav Kook the man as well as a glimpse into the movement he has created. The author does an excellent job accomplishing both. "The Essential Writings of Rav Kook" has given me a much greater understanding of this very holy man. Bokser has done a wonderful job painting the picture of this very pious, and controversial, ...

The Woodstock Generation!!!
This is one terrific book. Bush may be a "reluctant atheist" but he is not reluctant to share his thoughts, feelings, experiences and, no less important, his scholarship. Read this book and you will learn a lot, whether you are one of the "Woodstock generation," someone like me who taught them at college in the 60s, or just interested in that period. And I haven't even said anything about his ...

What a great read!
Set in early medieval northern Africa, the book evokes an exotic atmosphere with caravans, rabbinic tales, a rebellious daughter, an outraged father, pirates, Bedouins and more. Burton Visotzky has crafted a novel that consists primarily of letters sent to and from the principal characters in the novel. Despite the letter format, the characters became people that I cared about. The author has ...

Shabbat conversations with the Rabbis.
"Torah and Company" invites a distinctive blend of traditional rabbinic thought and contemporary spirituality to every Jewish family's Sabbath table. By adding brief, carefully selected excerpts from the Talmud and Mishnah to the more familiar Biblical texts, Rabbi Abrams demonstrates links in Jewish thought that propel the conversation from ancient discussion to contemporary spirituality. I ...

How the Torah text reflects the text of our own lives
For about two decades, Rabbi Gold has been gifting the world with memorable sacred songs and chants. This is her first book, and it's been worth waiting for. In it, she relates to Torah with the same artistic sensibilities that have infused her music. She has a gift for articulating inner conversations, giving voice to the Work of being true to one's highest self. Perhaps this is why the prose is ...

Stars of Jewish thought
The B'nai B'rith series of books on Jewish thought provides clear basic outlines of the thinking of major Jewish figures of the modern era. The approach is eclectic and there is an effort to draw from all streams of Judaism. Each chapter is a good introduction which might lead to fuller effort to understand the thinker in question, which when they are like Rabbis Kook and Soloveitchik well known.

The Lilac Tree
I bought this book because I know the publishers, but that's not at all my reason for recommending it to others. It's a terrific story, beautifully written, with many remarkable characters. I miss them now that i've finished reading the book.

The eleven thought-provoking papers in this volume touch upon core issues facing Jewish educators today: identity development, Jewish identification, the impact of media and Internet use on Orthodox Jewish youth, challenges in teaching universalism in a particularistic culture, teaching Judaism in a post-modern world, educational implications of the 2001 Jewish Population survey, Zionist attitudes among yeshiva students in Israel, and more.

Stirring novel, memorable character
My favorite books have strong characters who teach me something about living. Lawrence Bush's Bessie is a remarkable character whose story made me cry, laugh, bite my nails, groan, and cheer her on. As a bonus, Bessie fleshed out my sketchy understanding of the role of the Jewish immigrant in the American Communist party. As a young anti-czarist revolutionary, Bessie finds herself, alone, in ...
