Great Gimmick, Long Book
I've never cared for Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Roderick Alleyn as a character. He seems stuffy and annoyingly patronizing to his loyal assistant Fox. However, the Inspector Alleyn books are consistently good detective stories. "A Wreath for Rivera" (APA "Swing, Brother, Swing") has a nice plot with interesting, if somewhat cardboard, characters.
