1984
George Orwell

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2007

Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world in which privacy does not exist, news is manufactured according to the authorities' will, and those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death. Orwell's 1949 nightmare vision of the world we were becoming is still the great modern classic of negative Utopia.

1001 Nights in Iraq: The Shocking Story of an American Forced to Fight for Saddam against the Country He Loves6 reviews
Shant Kenderian

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2007

Wonderful story of a man who faced death to get out of Iraq
I met Shant Kenderian in the Gulf War. He braved many dangers, and many hardships. I met him and his family again last July in LA, Calif. when I was coming home from a 27 day trip to Viet Nam and Thailand. He still is a wonderful man. God had blessed him. His faith in God pulled him through many hardships. It was a wonderful reunion after 15 years. He remembered things in his book that I ...

Maria Beaumont

Loved this book!
I thought this book was a riot. The writing was good, full of funny quips and I liked the main character. As the other reviewer noted about her just kinda wallowing in her pity and doing nothing about it...well, I could so relate with this characteristic. I have depression and it gets VERY hard sometimes as a mother. I've been known to dabble in a few too many glasses of wine myself a couple ...

Actually, It Is Your Parents' Fault: Why Your Romantic Relationship Isn't Working and How to Fix It7 reviews
Philip Van Munching, Bernie, Ph.D. Katz

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2007

get the recording if you can
The recorded version of this book is even better than the print version. Like some others I found the sections returning to the wolf's story something to fast forward through. On the whole it provided an interesting set of characters (with a few subplots) and some real suspense about the culprit. It made feel as if I were back in Sweden listening to Swedes speaking English.

All the Sad Young Literary Men5 reviews
Keith Gessen

Blackstone Audio, Inc., 2008

Romantic and Literary Ambitions
Gessen, Keith. "All the Sad Young Literary Men", Viking, 2008. Literary and Romantic Ambitions Amos Lassen I came across Keith Gessen's "All the Sad Young Literary Men" quite by accident but what a wonderful accident that was for me as I discovered a jewel of a novel. It is even more of a prize because it is Gessen's first novel and it literally tears asunder the romantic and literary ...

Alentejo Blue
Monica Ali

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2006

Monica Ali's stunning second book is a collection of stories set in the Alentejo province of Portugal, linked by characters and by a vivid sense of place and time. Teresa is a beautiful young girl from the village who is supposed to marry a suitable man from the same community but who wants to see the world. Vasco is a café owner who is losing business to the new internet café down the road. The unseemly, dysfunctional, but strangely ...

American Gangster and Other Tales of New York3 reviews
Mark Jacobson

Blackstone Audio, Inc., 2007

The writing makes the book.
People who read Pete Hamill will love Mark Jacobson. I purchased the book because I saw the film, American Gangster, and discovered that the book is a collection of Jacobson's writings from New York Magazine and the Village Voice. Like Hamill, he makes the city come alive in all of its splendor, tawdriness, cruelty, and magnificence. The stories are all true, and if the reader didn't know that ...

The Age of Lincoln11 reviews
Vernon Orville Burton

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2007

History as Shakespeare might have written it
The best historians are excellent story tellers, usually with a relatively detached style. Burton is both an eminent scholar and a master story teller, but with a style that is anything but detached. Rather he achieves balance by assuming in turn in his narrative the voices of the competing passions and ideals that drove Americans to take up arms against each other. The result is the 19th ...

All Shook Up: Music, Passion, and Politics (Library Edition)7 reviews
Carson Holloway

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2006

Cogent and compelling
Mr. Holloway's book is a welcome addition to the discussion of culture and morality. Far from simply saying what is good and what is not, he shows how we have arrived at current opinions about music and it's place in our cultural life, and why what the likes of Plato and Aristotle had to say has relavence for today. This is a well reasoned and thoughtful treatise that should be read by everyone ...

American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer69 reviews
Kai Bird, Martin J. Sherwin

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2007

How the bomb got built here first
My father spent most of his career in nuclear engineering researching the mathematics of nuclear reactors at Brookhaven. My father had visited all the national labs and got to know all the key players in nuclear physics in the period from 1950-1970. Growing up in that environment I naturally knew a bit about Oppenheimer and Teller and others. It was clear to me that my father had sympathy for ...
