Buried Treasures: Tasty Tubers of the World (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)1 review

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2007

Brooklyn is where the Tuber grows???
Not really (LOL!) but this little book is PACKED with information of the tasty and helpful kind. From Purple Potatoes (which I have enjoyed eating from the first day I found them stocked at my Food Co-Op) to household plants that also bear edible tubers -- to cooking instructions (some with warnings-- not all tubers are initially benign) and recipes, as well as a list of places where you can ...

The Wildlife Gardener's Guide (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)3 reviews
Janet Marinelli

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2008

An ideal reference and a welcome, useful, recommended addition
Even the most domestic of gardens are living ecosystems that, for best effect, also incorporate insects, birds and small mammals for a well-balanced and dynamic habitat. The latest addition to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guides series, "The Wildlife Gardener's Guide" is specifically written by horticulturist Janet Marinelli (and former director of publications for the Brooklyn Botanic ...

Cacti and succulents are among the most bizarre and beautiful plants a gardener can grow—and included here are some of the most remarkable of them all: stapeliads and ceropegias. They also introduce varieties that are hardy enough to ...

Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)3 reviews
C. Colston Burrell

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2006

One to buy
I typically take books like this out of the local library when I need them, but I've bought this one, because of a combination of factors: low price, great readability, good pictures, good comprehensive overview of the plants. It is not really useful to me in quite the way the authors might have intended, that is, "Don't buy plant X, buy plants Y or Z or W instead..." One's likes/dislikes for ...

The Best Apples to Buy and Grow (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)4 reviews

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2005

Lots of useful information in a small, affordable softcover.
I am impressed with the quantity and quality of information in this nice little book (it would fit in a vehicle's glove-box). It is written by professional apple folks -- nurserymen, orchardists, researchers, breeders and professors -- and the information is up-to-date, which includes several disease-resistant cultivars that were introduced relatively recently. There is instruction for ...

Easy Lawns (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)3 reviews
Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001

Unique resource
If you are considering putting in a low maintenance lawn or meadow suited to your local climate, this is the book for you. I have not found anything to compare with the information packed in this slim volume. The authors examine the requirments of each geographic region and each type of grass available in detail, and even give a list of sources. With the information I gleaned here, I'm ready ...

Designing Borders for Sun and Shade (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)1 review
Bob Hyland

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2006

landscaping made easy
I love this little book because it gets down to the basics of designing and planting a border, without being a huge (expensive) book. Although simply written, I enjoy the author's aesthetic. These are not so much expensive, showy plants, but rather attractive, unfussy plants for sun and shade. Some of them are native plants, useful for attracting birds and insects.

Chile Peppers (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)1 review
Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001

Okay, but not about growing peppers per se.....
I bought this book used because I wanted to compare the BBG CHILE PEPPER book with other pepper books and the price was right. I have a confession. I never eat peppers. I can grow anything that smacks of capsicum, but I don't even like the smell of green peppers on pizza. Okay, I make chili and do it the right way with several tablespoons of ground chili pepper, and I eat plenty of Asian food ...

Landscaping Indoors1 review
Scott D. Appell

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2000

Bamboo Garden here I come!
On the design side, this book succeeds very well, there's all kinds of information here about indoor garden design elements and practices including four design plans. One nice feature of this book is it's emphasis on historical gardening practices, especially those of the Victorians (there's even a list of rare book dealers specializing in botanical history at the end of the book in case you ...

The Gardener's Guide to Growing Orchids (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)1 review

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2004

Good handbook for beginners
This concise little handbook (120 pages) has chapters on buying orchids, growing requirements, potting, growing under lights, diseases and pests, propagation, hybridizing, collecting and showing orchids. The info is good and easy to understand for beginning enthusiasts. The book does not spent much time on the different types of orchids and their specific requirements so this should by no means ...

The Natural Water Garden (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide)4 reviews
Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001

Realistic water gardening
With the boom in water garden popularity has come the boom in water gardening books. Most of these books are expensive and disappointing, either being pretty picture books or complicated guides to dream water gardens. As usual, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden 21st Century Gardening Series has delivered the goods for under $10. The subtitle of this book, "Pools, Ponds, Marshes & Bogs for Backyards ...

Japanese-Inspired Gardens1 review
Patricia Jonas

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001

A very good introduction
This brief book served as a great introduction to Japanese gardening philosophy and technique. I must admit that I approached the idea of a Japanese garden with some pretty stereotypical views of what to include and how to structure the space. This book shows how the philosophy is actually more important than specific elements or plants. In fact, I realized that I have been using some of these ...
