F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald)1117 reviews
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Cambridge University Press, 1991

Fantastic! One of my Favorite Books!
Aside from making a powerful statement about the so called "American Dream," this novel is brilliantly written. Mr. Fitzgerald's mastery of the English language is evident in his genius sentence structure and meticulous word choice. One cannot help but stop reading to simply marvel at some of his phrasing. I highly recommend Gatsby to anyone out for great read.

The Art of Electronics120 reviews
Paul Horowitz, Winfield Hill

Cambridge University Press, 1989

Great refresher and then some
It is obvious to some that this book would contain material for the design of electronics but everyone who has any interest in the subject could just as easily learn electronics by giving this a read and performing some of the practice problems. I wish this was my text book in college. The book is a very easy read as the authors keep the material light at first and build on the knowledge gained ...

A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations3 reviews
Daniel Fleisch

Cambridge University Press, 2008

Epiphany of clarity!
Maxwell's equations represent a comprehensive and descriptive condensation of (once believed to be disparate) electromagnetic phenomena, into a gloriously concise set of self-consistent (albeit arcane) mathematical statements. Daniel Fleisch has lucidly crafted explanations both of Maxwell's equations that describe EM phenomena, while simultaneously employing the latter to motivate, justify, and ...

Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology: Neuroscientific Basis and Practical Applications (Essential ...21 reviews
Stephen M. Stahl

Cambridge University Press, 2008

The one book that needs to be in your library
Dr. Stahl and Nancy Munter have outdone themselves once again. While the bar they have set is always high, this is the best book they have produced to date. Details are rich and easily understood - they even include tyramine content by brand. Everyone involved in treating patients needs to have this book in their library AND read it.

Essential Psychopharmacology: The Prescriber's Guide: Revised and Updated Edition (Essential ...23 reviews
Stephen M. Stahl

Cambridge University Press, 2006

Essential Psychopharmacology: the Prescriber's Guide
Great book! I went to a training by the author on polypharmacy in the treatment of individuals with mental illnesses. I then bought his general "Essential Psychopharmacology" book that was fairly complex, but the cartoons made the information fairly understandable for a non medical person like myself. The "Prescriber's Guide" is much more understandable and very useful in it's discussion of ...

Data Analysis Using Regression and Multilevel/Hierarchical Models10 reviews
Andrew Gelman, Jennifer Hill

Cambridge University Press, 2006

Outstandingly useful for social scientists
I found this book after reading up on the weaknesses of traditional psychological statistics and methods. I read through 3 or 4 classic texts on classical regression (Casella and Berger, etc) and a couple more texts on Bayesian analysis (including Gelman's own Bayesian Data Analysis). When this book came out, I was quite excited and pre-ordered it. The book far exceeded my expectations. It ...

Jane Austen

My favorite Jane Austen Book
If you have never read any of Jane Austen's books, I recommend you read this one. Definitely her masterpiece. Wonderful love story, great characters. You won't want to put it down.

Much Ado about Nothing (Cambridge School Shakespeare)283 reviews
William Shakespeare

Cambridge University Press, 2005

Fun, quirky, and true to the spirit of the Shakespearen romantic comedy
I consider this to be one of my favorite movies. It's a true chamer that proves that a good play of Shakespeare can be set at any time. The charming game of cat-and-mouse with lovers is only part of the wonder when it comes to the talented set of actors, each one perfect for their role. However, the best performances are demonstrated by Branagh and Emma Thomspon, whom we all know can do just ...

Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course)8 reviews
North American Cambridge Classics Project

Cambridge University Press, 2001

Salvete!
I found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs. As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a ...

The Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare (Cambridge Illustrated Histories)8 reviews

Cambridge University Press, 2000

Excellent Summary On The Evolution of Western Warfare
As with its political and economic systems, Western Europe came to develop very unique military institutions that had evolved from Greco-Roman military doctrines applying war as a science and as a precise instrument towards defined political ends: emphasizing on uniform training and equipment as well as strict discipline. This book studies the evolution of Western military institutions from ...

Machiavelli: The Prince (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)270 reviews
Niccolo Machiavelli

Cambridge University Press, 1988

`Do the ends justify the means?'
A young colleague of mine recently said `management is easy'. I smiled enigmatically and considered buying him a copy of `The Prince' but I fear it would be wasted. I am now on my third copy of this book which, alas, I can only read in English. The George Bull translation (as reprinted in 1995) is the version I currently refer to. I first read this book when studying economic history at high ...

Euripides: Medea (Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics)24 reviews
Euripides

Cambridge University Press, 2002

Great Buy!!
This book is an absolute bargain at this price and the shipping was super fast. This translation is great for younger readers and speaks to them in an easily understandable tongue.

Camus: The Stranger (A Student Guide: Landmarks of World Literature)519 reviews
Patrick McCarthy

Cambridge University Press, 2004

Dispassionately Compelling
Like most of Camus' works, The Stranger's plot is simple but the meaning is trivially existentialist and compelling. The Stranger begins with the death of narrator Meursault's mother. After napping on the bus to her retirement home, Meursault is disengaged and unmoved by the vigil and funeral procession, and continues to be until the finale of his trial. Meursault appears insensitive ...

A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II58 reviews
Gerhard L. Weinberg

Cambridge University Press, 2005

The best global history of WWII
Second time I read this book. They don't get any more comprehensive than this. It is not a military history as much as a diplomatic, and global analysis of the conflict. It tries to explain in detail how things got to happen, and why, rather than what exactly happened. Geopolitics is the best word that defines this book. It assumes that the reader knows what happened, 'grosso modo', and then ...

Northanger Abbey (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Jane Austen)89 reviews
Jane Austen

Cambridge University Press, 2006

Northanger Abbey: Janeites rejoice in this light and lively tour de force
Northanger Abbey is a gem. Jane Austen (1775-1817)has written a charmiing little novel about a charming little lady named Catherine Moreland. Catherine is 15 as the novel begins in Wiltshire. She and the hilariously stupid Mrs. Allen go on a six week trip to nearby Bath to take the waters. Catherine meets the fashionable and fast Isabella Thorpe. Catherine dances with the clergyman Henry Tilney ...

The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-20503 reviews

Cambridge University Press, 2001

The Heart of Asymmetric Advantage is NOT Technology
This is the only serious book I have been able to find that addresses revolutions in military affairs with useful case studies, a specific focus on whether asymmetric advantages do or do not result, and a very satisfactory executive conclusion. This book is strongly recommended for both military professionals, and the executive and congressional authorities who persist in sharing the fiction ...

Numerical Recipes 3rd Edition: The Art of Scientific Computing5 reviews
William H. Press, Saul A. Teukolsky, ...

Cambridge University Press, 2007

Essential book on scientific computing
Fifteen years after its previous edition, this peerless book on scientific computing has been upgraded with some very welcome changes. Not only have some advances in scientific computing been incorporated, the explanations are even clearer and more detailed than before. More importantly, the code has been reworked so that it is better than it was in the previous edition. I don't agree with the ...

Hamlet (Cambridge School Shakespeare)150 reviews
William Shakespeare

Cambridge University Press, 2005

Best Shakespeare editions - for students and wannabe students
I'm not ashamed to admit it. I find Shakespeare difficult. I need help. The Cambridge School Shakespeare editions, with the classroom activities and assignments on each facing page, give me the focus and direction I need to finally truly enjoy the text. I thought I didn't like Shakespeare until I took a class on several of the plays. It turns out that I love Shakespeare when I'm doing close ...
