This Side of Paradise95 reviews
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Charles Scribner's Sons

A brilliant, serious, and triumphant first novel
Fitzgerald's brilliant, serious, and triumphant first novel can be summarized as follows: Bittersweet experience transmutes Amory Blaine's youthful enthusiasm for wealth and romance and art into a mature understanding of self and of the need to serve others. Fitzgerald is a watercolorist, not an oil painter. He conveys meaning with deft gestures that allow a part (of a room, a person, a ...

A journey to the centre of the earth123 reviews
Jules Verne

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1906

Another Wonderful Adventure by Jules Verne
Note: Some immature Mormon has been slamming my reviews because I wrote some negative reviews of books attempting to defend the Book of Mormon. So your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. A short review is not necessarily a bad review if it leads you to a great novel. I've just noted the general theme. Thanks A group of adventures with an old map travel to Iceland and find a cave. ...

The Old Man and the Sea8 reviews
Ernest Hemingway

Charles Scribner's & Sons, 1979

One of the greatest stories of all time
Ernest Hemingway was one of the greatest writers of all time, and Old Man and the Sea is one of his greatest works. The story is simple and compelling, as all of his greatest works are, but this one stands out because anybody can see themselves in either the old man, the boy, or even the fish. Once you pick this book up and start reading, the story will envelope you and make it hard to put ...

The Great Gatsby (Scribner Classic)1117 reviews
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953

Fantastic! One of my Favorite Books!
Aside from making a powerful statement about the so called "American Dream," this novel is brilliantly written. Mr. Fitzgerald's mastery of the English language is evident in his genius sentence structure and meticulous word choice. One cannot help but stop reading to simply marvel at some of his phrasing. I highly recommend Gatsby to anyone out for great read.

In Our Time51 reviews
Ernest Hemingway

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1980

Hemingway at his best, the understated short story
Hemingway is the master of the understated short story. He takes simple themes and without use of superlatives, makes it real. This book is a collection of short stories where most feature a man name Nick, from his time as a young boy to manhood as it closes with two stories about him fishing. There is one story where no male name is given, so it may also be about Nick. The most gripping story ...

Cry, the Beloved Country240 reviews
Alan Paton

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1990

Still Relevant
Cry, the Beloved Country, written in 1948, is relevant after all these years. Alan Paton cries for South Africa his beloved country. He cries for the Valley of Umzimkulu the home of Stephen Kumalo and James Jarvis. He cries for the city of Johannesburg, the harsh city that spits at the weak with poverty, crime, prostitution and addictions. Paton uses a third person narrative voice to tell ...

Look homeward, angel: A story of the buried life60 reviews
Thomas Wolfe

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1947

Still, After All These Years, a Classic
Few writers can coin a phrase or capture a mood or feeling like Thomas Wolfe could. This is never more evident than in "Look Homeward, Angel." After all these years, still a classic, well worth reading for the first time or for another time. His ability to capture mood, colors, feelings and emotions in the depths of the human heart and soul, in and out of family relationships, is remarkable, as ...

Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape28 reviews
Barry Lopez

Charles Scribner & Sons, 1986

Filling and fulfilling
I bought this book while in the tourist center at McKinley National Park in Alaska because of the chapter on Polar Bears (someone at the desk recommended it to me). I have found this book to be amazing. This is one of the most rewarding books I've ever read. It's one of very few books that I'll read more than once. Lopez's writing creates a desire to know more, to research more, and to ...
