The Monk Who Grew Prayer4 reviews
Claire Brandenburg

Conciliar Press, 2003

wonderful introduction to prayer for toddlers
This is currently my 2 1/2 year old son's favorite book. It's a wonderful introduction to the daily cycle of prayers. Very beautifully illustrated. The story is very short and to the point (so that even the youngest child or the child with a short attention span can get through the book easily).

Creation and the Patriarchal Histories: Orthodox Christian Reflections on the Book of Genesis (Bible ...2 reviews
Patrick Henry Reardon

Conciliar Press, 2008

An excellent overview of the first book of the Bible
Excellent overview with specific points that bring unity to the whole of the law and the prophets. Short book, but much to meditate on. Pithy. I would recommend this book to non-Orthodox as well as Orthodox. The writing is easy to understand and would be an excellent compliment to personal bible study, as well as providing fresh words for any evangelical pastor's next sermon on Genesis.

Bread & Water, Wine & Oil: An Orthodox Christian Experience of God2 reviews
Meletios Webber

Conciliar Press, 2007

a book destined to become a classic
A key passage at the beginning of "Bread and Water, Wine and Oil" focuses on the on the Orthodox use of the word "mystery": "One of the most noticeable features of Eastern Christianity is that it is this word, `mystery,' rather than the word `sacrament,' which describes those actions of God which have a specific, decisive and eternal significance in the lives of those who take part in them. ...

Christ in the Psalms9 reviews
Patrick Henry Reardon

Conciliar Press, 2000

The Heart of Christ
Patrick Reardon has done me a wonderful service. I serve in a church that loves to sing the Psalms in worship (rather than hymns or other songs). One of my weekly goals is to show God's people that the Psalms are not just old covenant songs, but at their heart are truly centered on our Savior. Reardon's book does this, devoting a couple pages to each Psalm with the express mission of showing ...

Becoming Orthodox: A Journey to the Ancient Christian Faith49 reviews
Peter E. Gillquist

Conciliar Press, 2002

Stunning / A real Gem
First off, I give the author much credit and praise for a very well written treatise concerning the metamorphosis that occured when encountering this ancient Orthodox faith. Secondly, In my opinion, the book was realistic, unequivocal and believable in every aspect, given the myriad of utopian philosophies out there besides pseudo theologians. Thirdly, I found nothing prosaic as I easily glided ...

The Trial of Job: Orthodox Christian Reflections on the Book of Job2 reviews
Patrick Henry Reardon

Conciliar Press, 2005

Very Helpful, Insightful, Comforting and Inspiring Study of Job!
The Book of Job is fruitful to read without a guide, but if you want to "dine on it," you must have a trusted guide. I have read Fr. Reardon's other books as well as his reflections in Touchstone Magazine and I know him to be a trusted guide. As an Orthodox Christian I chose this book to read during Great Lent. As an Orthodox Christian priest, I recommend others to do so as well. This book is ...

Surprised by Christ: My Journey from Judaism to Orthodox Christianity2 reviews
James A. Bernstein

Conciliar Press, 2008

An excellent primer on Orthodox Christianity!
Surprised By Christ: My Journey from Judaism to Orthodox Christianity succeeds on several levels. The first is as an engaging and fascinating conversion story of a first-generation religious Jewish boy (Conservative Jew) in Queens, New York, raised as he puts it, "in the shadow of the Holocaust", whose "road to Damascus" encounter of Christ after reading the New Testament under his covers with ...

Thirsting For God in a Land of Shallow Wells16 reviews
Matthew Gallatin

Conciliar Press, 2002

The First Book I Ever Read Three Times
From a Protestant viewpoint...Whoa! This book is about to undergo its fourth read for me. It will ROCK your world. The Truth is sometimes hard to take because acceptance of it necessitates action. Can you handle the Truth, or do you want to stay in your own little box? It may knock you out, but if you love truth, it well set you free! Get out the oven mitts, this one may be too hot to handle. ...

This takes you step by step through the Mass. It explains each detail and you will experience Creation, the Passion of Christ, the Resurrection, the Blessed Mother and her role in Salvation, the forgiveness of sins but most of all the ...

Steps of Transformation: An Orthodox Priest Explores the Twelve Steps7 reviews
Father Webber Meletios, Meletios Webber

Conciliar Press, 2003

Excellent introduction to 12 Steps and their spiritual applications
In the following quote from the Introduction to "Steps of Transformation: An Orthodox Priest Explores the Twelve Steps," author Fr. Meletios Webber does an excellent job of summarizing his own work: "This book has two main purposes: The first is to explore the Twelve Steps of the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, to explain them to those who may be unfamiliar with them, and to show why the ...

Outstanding marriage preparation for any Christian couple!
This book is written with reference to the Orthodox wedding service, but is a wonderful resource for anybody in or preparing for a Christian marriage. This small purple book (originally published in Great Britain in 1945) contains prayers of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, prayers from which any reader can derive joy and benefit and fitting words to praise the one God in three Persons, God who is Light and Life, Transcendence and Immanence, Majesty and Mercy. Christ in His Saints5 reviews
Patrick Henry Reardon

Conciliar Press, 2004

More than a beginner's guide
Fr. Michael presents much more than simply a beginner's guide in this jewel of a little book. It is practical, realistic, and humorous and contains great advice on developing a wholistic life around prayer rather than a compartmentalized one in which one simply includes prayer. The idea is to do more than pray. The idea is to become prayer. Highly recommended

Royal Monastic: Princess Ileana of Romania2 reviews
Bev Cooke

Conciliar Press, 2008

A Remarkable Life
A fascinating portrayal of an Orthodox "royal" whose life was one of love and self-sacrifice during the turbulent years of the Second World War and communist take over of eastern Europe. Her privileged childhood was no impediment to the deep Christian faith which sustained her and eventually led her to the monastic life, and the desire to share this life with those in her adopted country of ...

Theophan the Recluse, Saint Theophan the Recluse

Conciliar Press, 2000

Raising Them Right: A Saints Advice on Raising Children
Intially I bought this book thinking - "What does a recluse know about raising children?" What I found out was - quite a bit!!! Christian Faith And Same Sex Attraction: Eastern Orthodox Reflections5 reviews
Thomas Hopko

Conciliar Press, 2006

Offers fresh perspectives on this sensitive issue
Below is a review of Fr. Hopko's book that was unfortunately received by the publisher after the book had already gone to press, and was therefore not included with the final publication. Dr. Elizabeth Stuart is a Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Winchester. She is also a lesbian and a leading UK theologian specializing in Queer Theology. I believe the review speaks ...

First and Second Corinthians, Straight From the Heart (Orthodox Bible Study Companion)2 reviews
Lawrence R. Farley

Conciliar Press, 2005

You've Got Mail....
Lawrence Farley's bible study companions are an excellent resource. Not only do they provide an easy to use format - but with self-contained note pages and the actual bible verses printed in the book it can be used in confined spaces - i.e. while travelling etc. This study guide has a definite bias - that of the Apostolic Church Father's interpretation of scripture. This is a GOOD THING. It ...
