Your Annotated, Illustrated College Survival Guide3 reviews
Pat Rothfuss

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 2005

The coolest book ever.
This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's an advice column written by this insane guy who has been a student for, like nine years. The columns are about bizzare subjects like: "Things you can eat that aren't really food," "Tips for Stalkers," and "How to become a prostitute." Seriously. I've never read anything like it. He's like Ann Landers on LSD.

C.S. Lewis: Mere Christian, Fourth Edition4 reviews
Kathryn Lindskoog

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 2007

CAUTION: This book may ruin your vacation!
First of all, let me qualify my comments by saying that I am an ARDENT and DEVOTED C.S. Lewis fan. I have two shelves in one of my six sagging bookcases exclusively devoted to C.S. Lewis' works alone. Long ago, I committed myself to reading at least one book by Lewis each month of the year, and I have faithfully kept up this practice for many years now. I say all of this only to introduce ...

Selling Satan: The Evangelical Media and the Mike Warnke Scandal34 reviews
Mike Hertenstein, Jon Trott

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1993

Meet the religious media's Woodward & Bernstein...
This extended version of Hertenstein & Trott's original Cornerstone expose on Warnke is a fine example of solid journalism and fact-finding w/out resorting to condemnation or judgement. Was this done maliciously or solely for the sake of a good story? Not at all...Cornerstone gave Warnke an opportunity to refute their findings and prove his outlandish claims, but he refused to talk to them. ...

Finding the Landlord: A Guidebook to C.S. Lewis's Pilgrim's Regress2 reviews
Kathryn Lindskoog, C. S. Lewis

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1997

A Must Have
I can not say enough about Kathryn Lindskoog's guides. This one is no exception. We used the Worldviews of the Western World and Veritas Press's Omnibus program and when we had finished studying the philosophers, we decided to read Pilgrim's Regress. Pilgrim's Progress had already been part of the curriculum, but Pilgrim's Regress had so much of the world's philosophies at its core, that we knew ...

Flannery O'Connor: A Proper Scaring2 reviews
Jill Pelaez Baumgaertner

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1998

Great Intro to a Great Writer
Several years ago I did extensive college-level work on the writings of Flannery O'Connor. I found two books particularly helpful in understanding the fullness of O'Connor's achievement, this book and Brian Ragen's "A Wreck on the Road to Damascus." Baumgaertner writes from a similar theological perspective, and though I do not believe she is a Roman Catholic as O'Connor was, she writes with ...

Orphan Girl: The Memoir of a Chicago Bag Lady3 reviews
Marie James

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1997

A Sad Portrait, but a Very Real One...
This book touched the heart and moves the soul. The author does a remarkable job of bringing this unknown little bag lady to life and to our awareness. Her story is the story of so many lost souls in America's streets. This book inspires one to do more, reach more, and love more.

Christian Mythmakers: C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, J.R.R. Tolkien, George Madonald, G.K. Chesterton, and ...3 reviews
Rolland Hein

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 2002

Great literary criticism of the Christian "Mythmakers"
In this relatively short work, Rolland Hein manages to successfully review and critique the works of many Christian authors who created mythological stories. The critiques, ranging from Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" to Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," are arranged chronologically, beginning with Dante and ending with contemporary 'mythmakers.' The reviews not only cover the works and the ...

Chicago Christmas: 100 Years of Christmas Memories2 reviews
Jim Benes

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 2000

A Trip Through Time
This book takes its readers on a trip through time to visit Christmas in past years. It is filled with stories of Chicago's past - some funny, some poignant, some sad - but all entertaining. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who loves Chicago and loves Christmas. I've bought multiple copies for gifts and would recommend it to anyone searching for a unique gift.

Oboe Jones: A Collection of Cartoons from Cornerstone Magazine3 reviews
Kevin Frank

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1997

Real Life Situations Through a Christian Point of View
Cornerstone is a Christian periodical of poems, art, short stories, music and book reviews, and interviews with particular artists, both Christian and secular (ie: Jon Bon Jovi, Joey Ramone). Through Cornerstone magazine, I became familiar with Kevin Frank's cartoon Oboe Jones. In this collection of cartoons, you'll see characters like Oboe, Claymore, Eugene, Gloria, Alice, Apoplexy, Margo, ...

Beyond Belief: Cartoon Confessions of Faith1 review
Roger Judd

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 1997

Predestined Free Will
Each page of this book presents a whimsical view of the reality of Christian life. As an elder, I found this book a suprisingly humorous, fresh and accurate look at everyday attitudes and actions I see every day. The author helped me see humor in many situations, from struggles in theology to its general mis-application, but always as life is lived out. Author and artist Judd recreates ...

Hammers & Nails: The Life and Music of Mark Heard4 reviews
Matthew T Dickerson

Cornerstone Press Chicago, 2003

Treasure of the Broken Land
Even if you don't have the foggiest idea who Mark Heard was, you should read this book if you are haunted by beauty or if you struggle with the holy terror of trying to figure out how to live out your vocation in a world that has "packaged our virtues in cellulose dreams/ and sold us the remnants `till our pockets are clean." "Hammers and Nails", like Heard's music that inspired it, is by turns ...
