Hattie Big Sky
For upper elementary school children who are studying American history this gives a vivid picture of what Montana was like for homesteaders. The story is captivating yet eye opening. It is easy to forget the attitudes of early settlers toward Germans during WWI. The vocaulary is good, some new words, yet not too many.

Maybe it's not REALLY Over...
I do understand the fact that people of different stations and races were expected to strictly adhere to 'their own kind', but this is a book, where anything can happen. That is what artistic license and imagination are for. Even with these stipulations, Gemma and Kartik may have possibly been able to get married in India, as Gemma had grown up there and could have been viewed as being one of ...

Great way to end the series!
This whole series of books is amazing. This book really wraps things up nicely, although it did leave me wanting more. :( It is a page-turner. I couldn't put it down and stayed up all night reading it. The author writes in a way that gets you attached to each character. A must-read!

D'aulaires
When I was only a few years old, the first book my father ever read to me from and that I in turn read from was D'aulaires Book of Greek Myths, and that has proven to be the spark that kindled my fascination with human societies. My single greatest passion is the chronology of human history, which was stirred in me at a very young age by this book, without which I cannot even imagine the ...

A time-honored tradition - Power
Gathering Blue, like The Giver, delves into a recurring theme found in humanity - power and control and the consequences thereof. Once humans moved beyond hunter and gatherer and created complex societies, a hierarchical class structure also developed - the Haves and the Have Nots. Lowery delves into this class structure by blatantly pointing out how power, in the hands of the few, shape ...

The GIver
Great trilogy. Haven't read the 2nd 2 yet, so this review is just for The Giver. I bought it for myself and my 9 year old. We both really liked it. It is written in such a way, that you envision a black and white world devoid of emotion and color which is what the author wants. It really was a great book for discussion with my child as it explores having personal choice, love/nuturing/emotions, ...

A Wonderful Journey Home
The Incredible Journey is a great and heartwarming book. It is about three animals (an old Bull Terrier, a young Labrador retriever, and a feisty Siamese cat) who set out to find their master and family. It was a dangerous but wonderful journey. This book made me feel like I was actually there in the Canadian wilderness. I think anyone who loves animals and adventure would like this book. ...

My Thoughts
When i first saw this book it was from my friend. I got it out of the library and started to read it. It was amazing. That Janie could go through all of this and still not go crazy.(even though she sorta did.) Reeve is an amazing charecter and i think Cooney really brought out the teenagers life with friends family and a love life. An amazing book and I can't wait to read the others.

The Ideal home changes
Identified as the "Companion": to Newbery-winning "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue", I picked up Messenger with high expectations. The other two were terrific, stunning in their own ways. I wasn't disappointed. Lowry's created world in which the three villages of the three stories exist is clever and well developed. To this adult reader, although it's never stated, it seems these villages rise ...

Ah a blast from the past
I had to read this book in elementary school, but I've been thinking about it lately and wondered if it was still around. Looks like it's not only around, but being used in schools just as regularly as before. Also with 1200+ reviews, I'm not sure it needs any more, including this one. I will say that even though I haven't read it in twenty years, that it still makes me want to shed a little ...

This book was amazingly great. It was completely different from Holes. In my opinion I thought it was way better. When I started this book I thought it would be good just like Holes. I was way wrong. It was so much better. I started reading it and I just couldn't put it down. I'm 13 and I loved this book. I think it's a great book for anyone.

Dr. John Dee will set you free
The twins Josh and Sophie start out thee day as normal to find that people they know, they really did not know, and a sane mundane world is anything but. Soon they find themselves part of a ten thousand year old prophecy that may bring about the demise of the world as we know it. Needless to say I was drawn in to this title by the name of Nicolas Flámel. Instead of a biography I found a story ...
