The Broken Wings (Dodo Press)16 reviews
Kahlil Gibran

Dodo Press, 2007

Absolutely beautiful!
Calling Kahlil Gibran a poet is an understatement and this short story proves it. It is a simple story but one that will break your heart. Still, you will be glad you read it...(experienced it rather)! It will take you to another world, another era, stimulate your mind and touch your heart.

Beautiful Joe (Dodo Press)45 reviews
Marshall Saunders

Dodo Press, 2007

A Timeless Tale of a Canine Black Beauty
I first read this story as a Whitman abridged edition when I was about eight years old. It was hard for me to believe that some people were so cruel to animals, but I loved the book's old-fashioned narration and of the adventures of and lessons learned by Miss Laura and her family in raising Joe. The moment I learned what the word "abridged" meant, I went looking for the complete story; it took ...

Lost Illusions (Dodo Press)16 reviews
Honoré de Balzac

Dodo Press, 2006

Balzac at his best
I love Balzac. At his best he soars above the rest of French literature and here he is definitely at his finest. Easy to see why Proust thought him the best, at his best. Vautrin/Collyn is at his most sinister and attractive. If you haven't read Balzac before, this is the best to start with.

The Man Who Laughs (Dodo Press)27 reviews
Victor Hugo

Dodo Press, 2008

Quality Literature
This is extremely well written and the story is easy to follow. The story had me smile and cry. The method that Victor Hugo collected the sections of this book is similiar to the style Ayn Rand used in writing Atlas Shrugged-my favorite book. The Man Who Laughs is one I think every Victor Hugo fan would want to read and read again--I loved it!

Right Ho Jeeves (Dodo Press)20 reviews
P. G. Wodehouse

Dodo Press, 2005

Very good, sir.
It is rare that I derive such pleasure from a book, but Right Ho, Jeeves, gave me a delightful surprise. Not only does Wodehouse make an art of the satirical novel, but in the process wraps the reader up in the witty speech of Bertram Wooster and his strange arrangement of friends, family, and butler. Bertram, or "Bertie," as he is commonly known, stumbles through the entire novel with the idea ...

The Magic Pudding (Dodo Press)15 reviews
Norman Lindsay

Dodo Press, 2007

The Australian Lewis Carroll?
This book is part of the wonderful new series of republished children's books from the New York Review of Books. Over 80 years old, "The Magic Pudding" describes the adventures of a koala bear, named Bunyip Bluegum - the kind of koala who wears a high collar and spats - who falls in with a crazy cowboy sort of fellow named Bill Barnacle and a penguin named Sam Sawnoff. Bill and Sam are ...

Understood Betsy (Dodo Press)33 reviews
Dorothy Canfield

Dodo Press, 2007

Lovely Story For Girls
This is a wonderful story for girls. Read it aloud, savor it, laugh and even cry over it.Whatever you do, though, just get it! You'll be glad you did.

The Ballad of the White Horse (Dodo Press)12 reviews
G. K. Chesterton

Dodo Press, 2008

Simply amazing
I had read some of Chesterton's fictional books, most of which contain poems which he has written, and I very much enjoyed his poems, so I decided to get a book of his poetry. This too I really enjoyed, so I decided to get another book of his poetry, this time it was The Ballad of the White Horse, and this book simply blew away all of the rest of Chesterton's poems. In fact, it simply blows ...

Old Mother West Wind (Dodo Press)14 reviews
Thornton W. Burgess

Dodo Press, 2007

Sweet, Timeless Short Stories
A book of short stories about animals who talk, _Old Mother West Wind_ is enjoyable for a child of about five years to about eight as a read aloud (or older, if your child isn't terribly worldly.) These short tales often attempt to explain "how", as in how the skunk got his stripe, and have, in addition to the animals, characters such as Mother Nature and the Merry Little Breezes. Many of ...

Just David (Dodo Press)24 reviews
Eleanor H. Porter

Dodo Press, 2007

A Treasure of a Book!
As the other reviewers, I was given the book, by an aunt, back in the 60's when I was in seventh grade. She said she had been searching for a copy for me to read because she had loved it. I remember doing a book report on it for my 7th grade English class (I got an A)--and it was one book I never forgot. I thought it was out of print & had been looking for it for years at garage sales and used ...

Notes on Nursing; What It Is, and What It Is Not (Dodo Press)9 reviews
Florence Nightingale

Dodo Press, 2007

Must-read for any nurse or aspiring nurse.
Nursing is a vocation; not "just a job." Miss Nightingale knew this, and this book reflects this philosophy. Nursing-schools, many years ago, designed the curriculum--and educated the aspiring nurses--with this in mind. Sadly, many present-day nurses (and nursing-schools) have lost this ideal...and the state of affairs in nursing bears this out. If you're seriously considering nursing--or ...

The Golden Road (Dodo Press)9 reviews
Lucy Maud Montgomery

Dodo Press, 2007

One of the Two books I have read over and over....
The Golden Road and its prequel, The Story Girl, are two of the best books I have ever read. I never seem to get tired of them, either...I have read them countless times! If you enjoy L. M. Montgomery's novels, such as the Anne of Green Gables series, these books are a must. The Golden Road tells the story of cousins, Beverley (who narrates the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Dan, and Sara ...

The Histories (Dodo Press)12 reviews
Caius Cornelius Tacitus

Dodo Press, 2007

corrupting effects of power
Reading Tacitus' Annals I oft remembered Thucydides' account of the Peleponnesian wars. An important theme of the latter work was the corrupting effects of prolonged war on the morals and intellect of the Athenian people, who were ultimately degraded so much that they voted the destruction of the people of a small island just because they had chosen to remain neutral. Tacitus, on the other hand, ...

The Hunting of the Snark (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press)12 reviews
Lewis Carroll

Dodo Press, 2007

The best nonsense I've ever read
I have read a great deal of nonsense in the past, but this was by far the best nonsense that I have ever read. There is no point, no meaning, no sense, and no boringness. It is a delightful poem (which is well written and very fun to read aloud) about a crew on a ship hunting a snark. The crew includes a captain who only rings a bell, a beaver, a cook who only cooks beavers (the beaver and the ...

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (Dodo Press)9 reviews
P. Kropotkin

Dodo Press, 2007

Required bio reading
This book, which appears to be about the only surviving scientific text from Kropotkin's work, is very interesting and insightful. The first two chapters which deal with animals I found most interesting, because they address the roots of the falsehood of social-darwinism. Kropotkin then proceeds to move through the different stages of human society and describes the mutual aid a compassion ...

New Grub Street (Dodo Press)12 reviews
George Gissing

Dodo Press, 2005

The Hateful Spirit of Literary Rancour
George Gissing's 1891 novel, "New Grub Street," is likely one of the most depressing books I've ever read. Certainly, in its descriptions of literary life, be it in publishing, or in my own realm of graduate scholarship, the situations, truths, and lives Gissing portrays are still all too relevant. "New Grub Street" itself points to the timelessness of Gissing's portrayals - as Grub Street was ...

De Profundis (Dodo Press)9 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Dodo Press, 2005

Strangely moving
One of the most famous - and infamous - letters in all of literature, De Profundis is a strange little piece of work: either much more than it appears on the surface, or much less. It is something I think everyone should read, if only for its insight into the human character, particularly that of one under great personal suffering. Wilde wrote this extraordinarily long letter from prison to Lord ...

Framley Parsonage (Dodo Press)10 reviews
Anthony Trollope

Dodo Press, 2008

"Oh, why do I have to be ambitious?"
The fourth of the Chronicles of Barsetshire, Framley Parsonage (1861) is a gentle novel filled with memorable characters, including many characters from The Warden, Barchester Towers, and Dr. Thorne. Mark Robarts, a young vicar with a devoted wife, has a comfortable situation at Framley Parsonage on the estate of the indomitable Lady Lufton. Her son, now Lord Lufton, had been a friend of Mark ...

How to Live on 24 Hours a Day (Dodo Press)8 reviews
Arnold Bennett

Dodo Press, 2005

When it comes to self-help books, quality dilutes with time
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution first in England and then quickly following in America, more and more of the workforce transitioned into what we call white-collar jobs, where the workplace was outside and often far from the home. Because these new jobs more reflected our modern 21st-century jobs, in which the work was tedious, repetitive and the ambiguous results not always readily ...

Lord of the World (Dodo Press)9 reviews
Robert Hugh Benson

Dodo Press, 2007

The Last of All
R.H. Benson wrote two mystical visions of the future. _The Dawn of All_ is an extremely romantic and improbable 1911 parable of a 1971 world mostly Catholic and at peace, ready for the Second Coming. _The Lord of the World_ came first, in 1907, and was a darker vision. A world of flying craft, major scientific advances, and comfort has become a place of materialist despair. Euthanasia is ...
