Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics25 reviews
Frederick W. Byron, Robert W. Fuller

Dover Publications, 1992

Not an easy read, but a complete one
This book is complete and concise. Often concise means missing details, but not in this case. This is not an easy and breezy read. It is a densely packed little book with each page full of critical information on approaches to problems, so it will likely be slow going - it was for me. In the end, however, you will understand the information being presented at a price tag that is often one fifth ...

Ordinary Differential Equations38 reviews
Morris Tenenbaum, Harry Pollard

Dover Publications, 1985

Unbelievably Good
I don't give a damn what text you have been assigned - buy this book and Schaum's Differential Equations - work carefully through both and you will understand ODE's very well.

Origami Sea Life27 reviews
John Montroll, Robert J. Lang

Dover Publications, 1991

Awesome and Epic
This book has nearly 40 different models of origami from the frog to a dolphin, a sea shell, several different fishes like a shark, barracuda, and simpler fishes. But the models get difficult very quickly. A few are for beginners, most are for the more experienced veterans, especially the lobster and urchins. Well worth the money though if you are a fan of Montroll and Lang.

Introduction to the Devout Life40 reviews
St. Francis de Sales

Dover Publications, 2009

A roadmap to Heaven
Having read this book, I can now understand why St. Francis de Sales is a doctor of the Church. Simply put, Philothea, or An Introduction to the Devout Life is a roadmap to Heaven. But unlike many of the theological tracts or mystical tomes which one often finds professing to do the same thing, this book is, very simply, a practical manual for living a devout life in a world that is often ...

Simple Chess: New Algebraic Edition27 reviews
Michael Stean

Dover Publications, 2003

Speed Chess Means Speed Vision
I'm ranked over 2000, and normally concentrate on analysis books. Recently, I've gotten into speed competition and education, where club players ranked over 1,800 or so help younger players with quick advice, quick games, quick alternative lines, or playing a dozen or so simultaneous games. I find this book astonishing for an entirely different reason than most reviewers: it is one of the best ...

One of the best children's coloring books featuring horses available. I should know, I've purchased most of them.

One Two Three . . . Infinity: Facts and Speculations of Science29 reviews
George Gamow

Dover Publications, 1988

Blast From the Past
Although this was first published in 1947 - over 60 years ago!!! - it is as fresh as if it had been written today. Sure, we know much more about the quantum world, the composition of the atom and the universe itself but Gamow successfully accomplishes the subtitle of the book: Facts and speculation of Science. The clarity of language, mathematics, formulae and examples make this a delight to ...

Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting24 reviews
Alice Starmore

Dover Publications, 2009

Still a favorite
I had this book in a previous printing and lost it in a move. Now that I have it back in its new printing, it's like being united with an old friend. It is the most clear and comprehensive book on Fair Isle knitting that I know of. Also, Starmore presents the material with tons of beautiful photos and lots of tips and unique and helpful ways to describe what's supposed to be happening with the ...

As a young dancer my Mom bought this book to help further my understanding of ballet. This book proved to be the most valuable dance book I have ever bought or received. Origami Insects23 reviews
Robert J. Lang

Dover Publications, 1995

This one is IT
Out of all the books in my collection; this is the only book i still haven't completed all the projects. All projects in this book are for Advanced skilled. Most require complex folds that takes much time and effort to complete. The results are INSANE! The level of detail of these bug is unreal. Mine have been mistaken for real bugs on several occasions. Anyone feeling like they want to ...

Burnham's Celestial Handbook: An Observer's Guide to the Universe Beyond the Solar System, Vol. 118 reviews
Robert Burnham Jr.

Dover Publications, 1978

A rare book to be cherished.
Robert Burnham, Jr., spent twenty years at Lowell Observatory participating in a proper motion survey. During his tenure, he wrote this mammoth 3-volume work covering nearly every object visible in 2- to 12-inch telescopes. Each chapter, covering one constellation (both northern and southern hemispheres), begins with a detailed list of all stellar objects (double stars, variable stars, and deep ...

The Return of the Native (Dover Thrift Editions)17 reviews
Thomas Hardy

Dover Publications, 2003

The Best Audiobook I've Ever Heard
I love Thomas Hardy's writings and his novel "The Return of the Native" is probably my favorite thing he wrote. The descriptive passages are truly lush, vibrant and stunning. This reading by Alan Rickman is more than a reading: it is a master performance. I only wish that Rickman could read ALL of Hardy's novels. Highly recommended!

An Ideal Husband (Dover Thrift Editions)17 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Dover Publications, 2001

An Ideal Husband
This is a great play, the things that happen with the characters is extremley funny because it deals with morality and marital issues that still exist. The play is set in the late 1800s early 1900s in England. It is a perfect example of how we over anaylize things in society and that if we just "let go" of what an ideal relationship is we will see that the acceptance of two individuals is the ...

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry17 reviews
Linus Pauling, E. Bright Wilson Jr.

Dover Publications, 1985

One Of The Best Quantum Texts
Don't let anyone tell you quantum mechanics is easy because it isn't. It is the hardest subject anyone can even attempt to learn. In my experience most books are written by people who are too brilliant and use maths which is too advanced for the average non-brilliant person to understand. This book is one of the best simple introductions to quantum mechanics I have read. Yes there is a lot of ...

A General History of the Pyrates19 reviews
Daniel Defoe

Dover Publications, 1999

Foundational
The most authoritative edition of the foundational book on piracy. There is no other single work on piracy as important as this contemporary history. It was originally published in 1724 at the close of the "Golden Age of Piracy" in the west. The accompanying footnotes, introduction, and background materials are most useful.

Odd John and Sirius18 reviews
Olaf Stapledon

Dover Publications, 1964

Little Freak and Mandog
Olaf Stapledon was a visionary philosopher who utilized archetypal science fictional concepts, in the 1930s and 1940s, to comment brilliantly and movingly on the human condition. While Stapledon cannot be easily categorized as "sci-fi," he has had a wide, but currently unappreciated, influence on the field. His profound influence on Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury is quite obvious, and sci-fi ...

I loved this Book! I first saw it at the library and checked it out. But when I got it home and started looking at it, I knew I had to have it for my library. Great graphic drawings of animals in different poses.
