Eloise French 112 reviews
Editions Gallimard, 1920
Mother of Two I would think someone who would be offended by the style in which "Eloise" is written would be "smart" enough to know that the expression is "for all intents and purposes" and not "intensive purposes."

Les Bienveillantes 11 reviews Jonathan Littell
Editions Gallimard, 2006
Profound and devastating Jonathan Littell's "Les Bienveillantes" takes the reader through all the circles of the 20th century Inferno of Eastern Europe during the second world war. It may be read on one level as the modernist version of Dante's masterpiece: an architecture of the darkest places in the modern soul. The anti-hero begins as an idealist; his idealism leads him step by step into becoming a monster. Alas, ...

Le Petit Prince 68 reviews Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Editions Gallimard, 2000
Incroyable! This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. We read it in my fourth year french class, right before graduation. It is such a simple tale wherein lies a deep and meaningful message. It is open for interpretation, which is part of what makes it so great. You really have to think in order to gather the entire message. I hope to purchase the french version soon.

La Nausee (Folio) 4 reviews Jean-Paul Sartre
Editions Gallimard, 2002
Quite the Angelic Novel! This book, La Nausee, was certainly a gift from heaven. As I read it in front of the fire, over the shoulder of a gorgeous male, with a pathetic man at the window, I was struck by the poetry of the whole thing. La Nausee speaks about scruples, existentialism, and curmudgeons. Life is not all one big Remington Party, it points out. Au contraire, we must pay attention to love (the heart), honour ...

Le Testament Francais 5 reviews Andrei Makine
Editions Gallimard, 1999
the perfect read! Makine captures beautifully the solitary emptiness of the steppes and their harsh beauty... you can really feel the silence of the vast land, the chill of the wind, the warmth of his family's tiny appartment... even more important is his realistic and compelling portrayal of his struggle for identity, his desire to belong...

Au Revoir Les Enfants 5 reviews Louis Malle
Editions Gallimard, 1998
Wonderful book: one of the bests When I read the first time this book I cryed. This is wonderful book about olochaust. It's wiewed by the eyes of a children. He study in a French college, where we meet an other student, a jewish student. They became friend. But as they try to look away from the war, that reality will overwhelm them, break their friendship and break up them for ever. It's the story of olochaust's injustice, that ...

Le Doigt Magique 362 reviews Roald Dahl
Editions Gallimard, 2002
cute I thought this was an entertaining little book, but as some of the negative reviews suggest, it may be a little too dark for younger children. But then again, most under-10 children (if my nieces are any guide) are going to want books with more pictures and less text anyhow.

L'Etranger (Collection Folio, 2) 17 reviews Albert Camus
Editions Gallimard, 1990
Aujourd'hui, Maman est morte. What a way to begin a story?! And what can one say about Camus that hasn't already been said? This is a great novel filled with observations, images and actions carefully stitched into words by a master narrator. If you're a novice to French literature, this is a perfect place to begin.

La Chanson de Roland 1 review
Editions Gallimard, 1991
A great medieval epic tale La Chanson de Roland is the first and one the most important French national books.
It is a true story set in the age of Charlemagne, and any mythology/fantasy enthusiast will se a huge amount of parallels between this story and myths like Arthurian lore and even The Lord of the Rings.
Really interesting, and a must read for anyone that enjoys medieval history, literature or just a good ...

Vacances Du Petit Nicolas 6 reviews Goscinny Sempe, J J. Sempe
Editions Gallimard, 1999
You will laugh your head off and never want to put it down! This book is by far the best book in the "Le Petit Nicolas" series. It humorously captures all of the little (and big) things that make travelling with children such a tiring and hilarious adventure. The funniest chapter is called "La Plage, c'est chouette" and I have never laughed so hard as when I read the chapter. The vocab wasn't too tricky and I would recommend this book to anyone ...

L'Amant de la Chine Du Nord 4 reviews Marguerite Duras
Editions Gallimard, 1991
Beyond the confines of time & space - utterly haunting. This is one of those books which captures your total attention and you will never forget it. There is no way to describe it. Beyond the confines of time and space is the only way I can explain it, utterly haunting. It is as if the author is sitting with you, telling you her tale, and you're suspended in a sort of entranced state, not able to cry, not able to smile, not able to rationalize. ...

Le Petit Nicolas 19 reviews Goscinny Sempe

Hard to overstate the charm.... It would be hard to overstate the charm of these wonderful stories. Like many others, I picked up this book to help with my project of trying to teach myself French. Not only does it serve that purpose, but it is so engaging that it has held me on course when the inherent difficulty of the language and some cross-cultural exasperation has tempted me to chuck the whole project. No way could I ...

L'Homme Revolte (Folio Essais Series : No 15) 1 review Albert Camus
Editions Gallimard, 1990
the non-alienated intellectual/intellectual as moral leader A courageous and extraordinary essay,"The Rebel" (English title) was written at a time when many French intellectuals were either members of the Communist party and/or apologists for Stalin. The moral authority of France's intellectual 'elite' was unquestionably sympathetic to the orthodox Left in the immediate postwar period of the late 40's through the 50's. Camus' essay represents what ...

C'est Magnifique! I spent the past year learning French and found this book at a local bookstore. It is HYSTERICAL! It has made learning and maintaining French truly an enjoyable experience. There is so much wonderful humor in this book. I am excited to learn there are more in the series. The situations are funny, nothing is too precious, the kids seem to act like real kids and those poor adults...! I wish I ...
