Native Plants for Prairie Gardens 1 review June Flanagan
Fifth House Books, 2005
An important volume in the impressive 'Fifth House Gardening on the Level' series Native prairie plants are plants that originated naturally on the prairies of Canada and the United States. Gardeners, landscapers, and horticulturalists have come to appreciate the benefits of these plants in creating beautiful, environmentally friendly, disease resistant, low maintenance gardens in America's Upper Midwest regions and throughout the Canadian provinces. An important volume in the ...

Eternal Prairie: Exploring Rural Cemeteries of the West 1 review R. Adams
Fifth House Books, 1999
Very enjoyable and informative The author describes his cemetery adventures throughout the Canadian prairies, and provides lots of color and B/W photos. I especially appreciate the insight he provides on the symbolism found on the grave markers, and their ancient origins. The book is written more in the form of journal, describing the cemeteries as he moves from town to town, and providing historical insight in between.

Face the North Wind (Western Canadian Classic) 1 review A.L. Karras
Fifth House Books, 2005
A good book on Man and his struggle with the Wilderness. The first time I ever read this book was 10 years ago back in highschool when I did a report/essay about man and his struggle in the wilderness. Ever since, it has been a cornerstone for all my books about the North and man's struggle to make a living in it. I though I would write a few lines here after reading 'Face the North Wind' once again. Although I have not read 'North to Cree Lake' by the ...

Fifth House Books, 2003
North to Cree Lake Art Karras' book, about he and his brothers trapping career in northern Saskatchewan is quite factual and certainly illustrates the trials and tribulations faced by the old-time trappers and adventurers in the 1920s and 1930s....

The Snowbirds 2006 Calendar 2 reviews
Fifth House Books, 2005
The history, aviation insights and eye-catching photos make for an extraordinary package. Mike Sroka's photographs of the Canadian Forces 'Snowbirds' fighter planes would have been treat enough, but when paired with behind-the-scenes access into Snowbird team aviation history and daily details, it becomes an outstanding pick any military or aviation collection must have. Gorgeous color photos accompany insider's details that could only have been gained from a photographer who had ...

Five Pennies: A Prairie Boy's Story 1 review Irene Morck
Fifth House Books, 1999
Struggles and Joys of a Pioneer family Read it at once like a novel or in chapters like a series of vignettes, this delightful book features difficulties facing a farm family, and rejoices at their victories and grieves over their sorrows and defeats. Enjoy the mischievous pranks of a bunch of farm kids who invented ways to make their hard work more fun, and how their jokes sometimes turned into expensive lessons when things went ...

Romancing the Rockies: Used Mountaineers, Missionaries, Marilyn, and More 1 review Brian Brennan
Fifth House Books, 2005
Biographical gem Romancing the Rockies is a biographical study of the people who have been attracted to the Rockies by its romance; sometimes seduced and rejected, other times wooed and wed, but always held spellbound by its majesty. Arranged chronologically, the book starts with the earliest aboriginal inhabitants of the Canadian Rockies and moves up through early explorers and pioneers to modern times. The ...

Alberta Originals 1 review Brian Brennan
Fifth House Books, 2001
A warts-and-all look at Alberta's builders If there's any justice this side of the Pearly Gates, it resides in the eye of a fair-minded biographer. Not only does Brian Brennan give overdue credit and redress neglect, but he makes sense of the province's past by revisiting the lives of Alberta's dear departed. Alberta Originals is a great whack of stories about people who built this province through sheer force of personality... I so ...

Prairie Winterscape: Creative Gardening for the Forgotten Season 3 reviews Barbara Kam, Nora Bryan
Fifth House Books, 2003
Who'da thunk? Outdoor planters for winter on the prairies!! I love to garden and always hated our long, dreary winters. This book looks at gardening during the "off season" and argues (successfully) that it doesn't have to be off-putting at all! Now, I look outside and I see things differently. I never realized the beauty that already exists in my frosty backyard and now I know ways to improve upon it. Who would have thought that we in the cold zones ...

The Prairie Gardener's Book of Bugs: A Guide to Living with Common Garden Insects 4 reviews Ruth Staal, Nora Bryan
Fifth House Books, 2003
The Prairie Gardeners Book of Bugs - An Excellent Book!! Everyone who gardens, especially those who live in the prairies of Canada or the Northern USA, should read this book! It not only has great information about entomology and the individual bugs but also details about how to live with them. The illustrations are wonderful too! As a teacher, I suggest that it would make an excellent resource for school libraries as well because it's not only dry ...

Wild Birds Across the Prairies 2 reviews Wayne Lynch
Fifth House Books, 1999
Superb bird images; lively informative text Wayne Lynch is intoxicated with the beauty and mystery of the prairie and its denizens. He is a first rate science writer with a subtle sense of humor and a world class bird photographer to boot. I love all his books but this is one of the best. I highly recommend it to all nature lovers as a rare treat; it is so much more than just another bird book. I predict it will become a classic of ...

Firing Heather: The Life and Times of Nellie McClung 1 review May Hallett, Marilyn Davis
Fifth House Books, 1993
She's a Rebel "Firing the Heather" tells the life story of Nellie McClung, (1973-1951,) an irrepressible Canadian feminist, social reformer, writer, and politician. Its opening chapters are thorough to the point of tedium in chronicling her life and times, but the book can't help but get interesting as she matures and proceeds to set the world on fire. Her pivotal role in winning for Canadian women the right ...

The Rez Sisters 3 reviews Tomson Highway
Fifth House Books, 1992
The Sisters from the Rez This was a really dramatic play that expressed many issues that many people would never talk about in a book. It dealt with rape, death and solidarity among Native women. When it was assigned in my first year English class, I was not sure what to think before I read it. After I read it I found that it was one of the best plays that I have ever read and gives new insight into the Native culture ...

The World Is Our Witness: The Historic Journey of the Nisga'a into Canada 2 reviews Tom Molloy
Fifth House Books, 2000
A Great read Having been involved in the negotiation of treaties in Canada for the past 15 years I highly recommend this book. It is not the dry, legalistic tome that you might expect it to be, but Mr Molloy has imbued it with the personal touches about the negotiation and the negotiation process. His anecdotes ring true to life, and although I was not involved in the Nisgaa negotiations, similar occurences ...

Fifth House Books, 1989
I am Thompson Highway! I wrote this book back in '86 to cover a debt incurred during a rousing game of Kaiser in the Oshawa Tim Horton's. I never thought it would become so popular and I thank everyone especially Dr. Emily Moore, Professor of Latino-Apache Sesqueology at McGill University, for her undying support. She's a real firecracker!

Famous Name Trains: Travelling in Style with the CPR 2 reviews David Laurence Jones
Fifth House Books, 2006
Informed and Intelligent David L. Jones has written an informed and intelligent synopsis of the Canadian Pacific's operations. Unlike most "railfan" publications, this is far more than a picture book. His style makes pleasant reading while spinning a complex tale, from an insider's viewpoint. The book itself is attractive, creatively laid out and printed excellently. I highly recommend it.
