Deogratias, A Tale of Rwanda6 reviews
J.P. Stassen

First Second, 2006

A STORY THAT WILL HAUNT THE READER
Over the years when I've had to defend the medium of comics to my less illuminated friends and co-workers I've been able to point to many examples of works that rise above the mire of the usual. Things like "The Watchmen", "Bone", "Love and Rockets" and others. I will now add "Deogratias" to this distinguished group. The book is the product of Belgium writer/artist J.P. Stassen. The book is ...

The Professor's Daughter4 reviews
Joann Sfar, Emmanuel Guibert

First Second, 2007

A Victorian Girl and Her Mummy
It takes about twenty minutes to read The Professor's Daughter, a charming and gorgeously illustrated graphic novel by French artists Joann Sfar and Emmanuel Guibert originally published in 1997 and recently reissued in an English translation by First Second, an imprint of Roaring Brook Press. That's more than long enough to become emotionally invested in this madcap love story featuring Lillian ...

Robot Dreams9 reviews
Sara Varon

First Second, 2007

A wordless book made me cry
This was the first--and only--graphic novel I've ever read, let alone purchased. Long after I finished I found myself thinking about it, and also brooding over the memories that this book evoked, of failed friendships. Then I started to cry. This story ought to click with anyone who's ever had a friend, because I think it's a pretty universal thing about the human condition that all friendships ...

American Born Chinese49 reviews
Gene Luen Yang

First Second, 2006

Oh. My. Gosh.
Here's how this book came to be in my hands: I attended teacher training, was given a list of 50 "great" young adult titles, and decided that my reluctant readers would be attracted to the graphic novel format. I gurgled a bit when I saw the retail price, but decided that between the Amazon discount and the fact that this book could very well get my kids reading, I made the decision to choke up ...

Three Shadows8 reviews
Cyril Pedrosa

First Second, 2008

Great Story!
Joachim is an only child that has a relatively happy life living in the country with his parents. He spends his days farming, picking cherries, and swimming, to quote the book, "Everything was simple and sweet." Things changed when the shadows appeared. It seemed they want Joachim. His mother, Lise, speaks to a wise woman who says that they can't do anything, but Louis, Joachim's father, ...

Life Sucks2 reviews
Jessica Abel, Gabriel Soria

First Second, 2008

A Marxist take on vampirism?
First things first: I'm a friend of Jessica Abel's husband Matt Madden, and more recently a friend of Jessica, too. Take this review with a grain of salt if you must, but I'm not trying to do any log-rolling here. I'm not an avid comics reader, naturally. I'll occasionally buy one here or there if it looks interesting, but I'm no comics geek. Still, LIFE SUCKS has a lot of interesting ...

Kampung Boy6 reviews
Lat

First Second, 2006

Childhood
Here's a graphic novel about a boy growing up in Asia. It's fun to read because there is a lot of humor. I tried to read it to my 4-year-old son, but it's too long for him to pay attention.

Laika8 reviews
Nick Abadzis

First Second, 2007

Wonderful
Educational, emotional, dramatic. Also beautiful. Graphic novel format really works here: It can convey things a text-only book or video can't.

Drawing Words and Writing Pictures: Making Comics: Manga, Graphic Novels, and Beyond2 reviews
Jessica Abel, Matt Madden

First Second, 2008

Wanna' Make Comics? Start Here...
I brought an advance copy of this book into a college illustration class I teach. The class was quite impressed. In fact, two students went onto Amazon online and bought it instantly. Usually I discourage shopping during class, but Drawing Words and Writing Pictures is an answered prayer for the aspiring comics artist. This is an ideal text for a 15-week class in comics. It also has guidance ...

Sardine in Outer Space 4 (Sardine in Outer Space)
Emmanuel Guibert

First Second, 2007

Sardine is back, and she's got a whole host of new problems to face even before the spaceship Huckleberry can get off the ground! In the fourth volume of this exciting series, Sardine must tackle, among other things, monsters under the bed, flesh-eating tattoos, time machines, and even boredom. As always, Supermuscleman, Chief Executive Dictator of the Universe, lurks in the background, trying—unsuccessfully and incompetently—to make ...

Sardine in Outer Space 5 (Sardine in Outer Space)
Emmanuel Guibert

First Second, 2008

“It’s never too late to pick up this series.” - Booklist She’s a girl. She’s a space-pirate. She’s Sardine – and she’s back! With four Sardine books now published in the U.S., our favorite red-headed space pirate (about whom Kirkus said: “Resistance is futile” in a starred review) has a growing number of young fans. Eleanor in Brooklyn told us, “I like it that they live on ...

Tiny Tyrant1 review
Lewis Trondheim

First Second, 2007

Zut alors!
The French are different from you and me. They like their graphic novels smart, colorful, and consistently amusing. What other nation could claim the wonders of "Asterix and Obelix"? Who else has the chops to give us Joann Sfar on the one hand and then turn around to toss us the partnership of Lewis Trondheim & Fabrice Parme on the other? First Second Books, never afraid to co-opt the foreign so ...

Klezmer: Tales of the Wild East6 reviews
Joann Sfar

First Second, 2006

Oi Yeah!
I loved this book. I bought it for my girlfriend who loves Klezmer music and has Jewish roots. At first I thought "mmmh, maybe I'll give it a go, but the pictures are a bit weird!"....however as soon as I started reading it I was hooked and as my eyes grew accustomed to the style, I realized how wonderful the artwork actually was, both as great illustrations in themselves and as perfect ...

Sardine in Outer Space3 reviews
Emmanuel Guibert

First Second, 2006

A GEM FROM A PAIR OF FRENCH CARTOONISTS
Sardine in Outer Space is the creation of a couple of two brilliant French cartoonists and writers Emmanuel Guibert and Joann Sfar. This book collects twelve stories featuring the adventures of a little girl named Sardine, her cousin Louie, and her Uncle, the pirate Captain Yellow Shoulder as they travel through space on their ship The Huckleberry with a crew of kids and battle the evil ...

The Fate of the Artist2 reviews
Eddie Campbell

First Second, 2006

The Smartest Man in Comics
A pleasure to read. This book is a very clever and very funny piece of autobiography and formal (as in "form over function" not "fancy") experimentation. I was dubious about Campbell going color, especially since he seems to favor a washed-out "dirty paintbox" palette. The excerpts I saw on the web were underwhelming, but it looks great on the page.

Notes for a War Story1 review
Gipi

First Second, 2007

Amazing
This is probably one of the most amazing comics I've ever read. The watercolors are gorgeous and the story is compelling. Gipi is truly a master of his craft.

Kaput and Zosky2 reviews
Lewis Trondheim

First Second, 2008

Very funny... however...
This is a very funny book. However, just so Trondheim fans ordering it won't get disappointed later on - it's worth pointing out that only little more than half of the book is actually done by Trondheim. The first half has Trondheim doing story and art all by himself. The second half mostly features stories adapted from the scripts of the Kaput & Zosky television series. The art for these stories ...

Sardine in Outer Space 2 (Sardine in Outer Space)1 review
Emmanuel Guibert

First Second, 2006

As good as the first!
Even though I'm an adult, I have to admit I really love these books. Sardine 2 is as good as the first, and the kids I know who've read it agree (my friend's a teacher, and has shown them to her class). I think Sardine is a terrific role model for young girls--kick butt!

Little Vampire1 review
Joann Sfar

First Second, 2008

Presented in full-color, graphic novel format to appeal to young readers
This paperback vampire story is actually three stories in one - and is presented in full-color, graphic novel format to appeal to young readers and collections strong in high-interest graphic novel presentations. The stories LITTLE VAMPIRE GOES TO SCHOOL, LITTLE VAMPIRE DOES KUNG FU and LITTLE VAMPIRE AND THE CANINE DEFENDERS CLUB are whimsical, fun tales sure to draw in even reluctant readers.
