Lee Friedlander: Cherry Blossom Time in Japan1 review

Fraenkel Gallery, 2006

The very best work of a great photographer
'Cherry Blossom Time in Japan' is Lee Friedlander at the peak of his considerable powers. The phrase 'frozen jazz' pops into my head, probably because Friedlander made a living taking photos of jazz greats, but also because these pictures are sweeping, moving, alive. And yes, they're deeply emotional - at least to me. I have no idea what the photographer felt as he worked, but I can't help ...

The Eye Club
Constantin Brancusi, Andreas Gursky

Fraenkel Gallery, 2003

Description: "The Eye Club," unofficially founded around 1975, was the nickname given to the loose conglomeration of individuals who found themselves among the first new collectors of photography. Operating purely on instinct and the love of seeing, these few dozen people (including Sam Wagstaff, Andre Jammes and other now-legendary collectors) shared a distaste for established pantheons and veered instead toward the lesser-known, the anonymous, ...

The Book Of Shadows

D.A.P./Fraenkel Gallery, 2007

A meditation on the nature of photography itself, The Book of Shadows is a collection of 88 anonymous photographs spanning the twentieth century, all of which share a common "mistake"--the photographer's shadow falling into the image. Selected by gallerist Jeffrey Fraenkel from his personal collection of more than 2000, these images represent, in Fraenkel's words, "the most tenacious, peculiar, and downright sublime of the crop." The shadows ...

Lee Friedlander: Sticks & Stones4 reviews
James Enyeart

D.A.P./Fraenkel Gallery, 2004

FINALLY!
For years -- probably decades -- I've been hoping to find a collection of Friedlander's great photos of the urban and suburban landscape. I'd buy almost any survey or monograph just to have the two or three examples that might be thrown in among the works of others, or among Friedlander's own wide range of subjects. I'm delighted to say it was worth the wait. Page after beautifully printed ...

Lee Friedlander: The Little Screens: Special Edition
Lee Friedlander

Fraenkel Gallery, 2001

This Special Edition of 100 is signed & numbered. "The Little Screens" is a revered and influential body of early work by Lee Friedlander, but it has never before been brought together in its entirety. The book's title refers to the television screens housed in motel rooms and other nondescript rooms of anonymous character spread throughout the country during the 1960s. Each screen vividly transmits images of popular culture icons, political ...

Lee Friedlander1 review

D.A.P./Fraenkel Gallery, 2000

A Peculiar Joy
I picked up this book not knowing what to expect. What I found was a collection of surprisingly moving and amusing self-portraits. General themes: Lee pretending to be asleep, taking his own picture; Lee, standing behind tree branches or bushes. This is my new favorite coffee table book. A few quotes, from Jazz musicians, artists and poets, make up the only text in this book.

The Man in the Crowd: The Uneasy Streets of Garry Winogrand8 reviews
Garry Winogrand, Frish Brandt

Fraenkel Gallery, 1999

Not Bad For A Million Rolls of Film!
Gary Winogrand was the type of photographer who had a very itchy camera trigger finger. When he died he left behind around 10,000 rolls of undeveloped film. If it moved he photographed it. Did he shoot so many good pictures simply because he took such an unbelievably large number of them, i.e. if you take a million shots aren't you bound statistically to get at least a thousand good ones? Good ...
