A thorough, complete and scholarly book on the Holocaust.
"The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945" is the most thorough, complete and scholarly book on the Holocaust that I have read. In an effort to try to understand why and how the Holocaust occured, I have read extensively about the conduct and activities of the Europeans as well as non Europeans (governments, organizations and people)during this awful period. Friedlander ...

A fun read with a message you can argue with
If I had never read another work of Kingsolver's, this one alone would have turned me into an instant fan, though the truth is I already love her fiction. I found this book funny and warm, if read as a "country adventures" sort of book and not as a bible to living right. I especially loved the recipes, and the "turkey sex" section is hilarious (BTW, artifically inseminating poultry is no big ...

Liberation
Two women from completely different circumstances share equally weighted chains --one of poverty and the other of abuse. Both find accidental liberation. This is a very powerful novel that explores the desperate emotions that only the victimized could feel as well as the appreciation of unexpected freedom.

Good info, still eating McDonalds though
Well we all know more or less the content but I am still eating fast food. If you change what you are eating you are just fooling yourself. We all know fast food is bad, but tastes good.

Michael Chabon

The bush that burned but was not consumed
Chabon does it again. He has written a deeply Jewish book about super heroes and magical worlds. It was an adjustment to read his yiddishified English but soon I could not put it down. I waded through the dirt, grime and murder until the end, a place of hope, where the bush burns but is not consumed.

Anthony Bourdain

Wow!
I've been a fan of Mr. Bourdain for a while. I had no idea that his early career was so much like my own foray into the culinary arts. Great book, down to earth and brutally honest look at the dark underbelly of working in a kitchen. Very funny and embarassing parts engage the reader so much so that you don't want to put the book down. I liked it so much I read it in two days, then read it ...

Very funny and thought provoking!
I read it and thought about so many of the memoirs. Some really told a story and some left you wondering, but it is well worth the reading time.

Cokie Roberts

Good, thought provoking narrative, perhaps a bit forced in spots
In general, I've found Cokie Roberts' book, "Founding Mothers" to be an interesting if not fascinating work: she has done an excellent job of digging into the frequently ignored role of women in the development of the American Republic during the revolutionary era; and has presented her findings in an easy to read and thought provoking narrative, structured as a series of mini-biographies of each ...

Welcome to the Flow!
I stumbled upon Flow and was pleasantly surprised. The book, based on extensive research into the nature of happiness and man's most fulfilling moments, promises to provide steps towards enhancing the quality of life. With many examples and concrete suggestions, I found that it delivered to an impressive degree. From the appreciation of art and science, the deepening of friendships and ...

couldn't put it down
Yes, I know that's the worst sort of cliche, but it's also true. This is the first Oates novel I have ever read, and it was hard to put down. I can't give a book higher praise than that. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but if this is your cup of tea, it's terrific.

A MUST REA
Someone said, "If you know someone who has Alzheimer's, you do not want to read this book." Absolutely not true! My father-in-law has Alzheimers and I found this book to be incredibly insightful and thoughtful in regards to Alzheimer's. Once I started this book I could not put it down. The way Debra Dean weaves the tales in this book just captured me. It is probably one of the best books I have ...
