thoughtful - thorough- practical & compassionate
Ms. Small's book is considered a "classic" in the field of counseling persons with addictive illness for very good reasons. Her writing is very clear, concise, jargon-free (a huge plus in a field where some books require a separate glossary to understand the terminology! ), and extremely practical. Her utilization of brief and to-the-point clinical excerpts from counseling sessions are always ...

Best Resource Available
I have found this to be an excellent resource for every aspect of addiction. Dr. Robert Dupont is emminently qualified to author this text. He does an excellent job of personalizing his writing with examples from his practice. He offers a message of hope for addicts and their families. It is a tome, but a very readable one, and he even includes (in the introduction) a way to "speed read" it in ...

Taking Care of Ourselves
A decade or so ago a friend who was going through a rough patch in her life had a therapist who highly recommended this book of meditations. I happened to be in Barnes and Noble with her when she bought Melody Beattie's book, and after perusing a few of the passages, I bought one for myself. What a difference reading The Language of Letting Go made (and continues to make) in my life. I've ...

great recovery tool.....for the non-alcohol drug abuser
this is a must-have resource for those whose drug of choice is not alcohol, but some other drug (cocaine, meth, marijuana, Rx meds, etc.) Like the book Alcoholics Anonymous, it explains the foundations of recovery for those starting their journey into sobriety and recovery. After reading this, I would encourage the person to read other recovery materials, especially from the Hazelden ...

"How it works..."
If you have/have had a problem with alcohol, this is the book to read. The AA program has "worked" for millions of people, since 1935, when other tried means did not. For the guy who said the chapter, "To the Wives," is a sexist piece of trash: Use your brains, buddy. It describes the alcoholic, whether male or female, and how their ("politically correct") significant others can cope. I'm a ...

MUST READ!!!
If you're in recovery, this is a great, great read. It takes a hard and quick look at this most elusive of steps. The BB tells us that 'alcohol was but a symptom of our disease.' If that's the case, how do we change the balance? We now have a happy liver. How do we get a happy soul? This book is the real deal. Highly recommended. I can't give it more than 5 stars but it deserves more.

A life preserver.
This book is a sanity saver. There are some inspirational things to take away from reading it. Beattie injects her own life story into this self-help book. Coupled with her other books, it makes for reflective and well written advice.

A must read for professionals and parents
This is an excellent book for social workers, rehabilitation counselor's, drug and alcohol counselor's, mental health therapists, teacher's, doctor's, and parent's of FAS/FAE children. The research-based studies showing behavior and life=skills improvement after trying the new strategies of treatment is an eye-opener. Basically, it encourages a new way of thinking in treatment for this ...

A profound, important, and implication-rich book
For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication. Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific ...

Restoration Resource - Can't Recommend this Enough
I was walking through my local bookstore when my eyes caught sight of this book. The title drew me in, as I am grieving the death of my brother. I saw the author and thought, "Oh, no - not that Codependency woman..." Melody Beattie - who was the first author I ever knew to use the term "Co-Dependent" a term that had come for many to mean "whiney person who thinks of himself/herself as a ...

At almost 2 years out, this is the most helpful book so far
My 9 year old daughter died suddenly at school almost 2 years ago. While I have continued to function and do the things that I must do, I know that I will be haunted forever by sadness and guilt (i.e. "the what-ifs") forever. When my grief was new, "When Bad Things Happen To Good People" helped some. It gave me permission to see her death as random, horrifically bad luck. Not as a ...

Insightful
Any man willing to take a true inward look will benefit from reading this book. As Kivel points out, this is really our work to do as men - to take a look at what makes us prove our worth by posturing ourselves and emphasizing our power over others. This isn't easy because the priveledge that comes with power is so latent in what we do, we have to really listen to ourselves as well as the women ...
