English Grammar for Students of Spanish 21 reviews Emily Spinelli
Heinle, 1997
A LittleTreasure A student in my college Spanish class a few years ago introduced me to this little treasure. I was so impressed by the way it was written and designed that I asked the college bookstore to make it available. It was quite obvious that 90% of my students did not know English parts of speech nor syntax therefore handicapping them if they wanted to learn a foreign language. I used the excercises at ...

La Grammaire a l'oeuvre: Media Edition (with Quia) 4 reviews John Barson
Heinle, 2003
Great information, not so great layout I'm not currently taking a class, so I purchased this book in an earlier edition to study grammar on my own. I like the way subjects are arranged in the book, and the examples provided are long enough to give good context.
My main complaint is visual- the book is organized into two columns with text packed in and items in tables are centered rather than left justified. I found this made it a ...

Triple Play Plus Spanish 4 reviews Syracuse Language Syracuse Language Systems
Heinle, 1998
Be Careful - won't run on XP I have this software for Chinese. It is fantastic software and I would highly recommend it. But be careful. I upgraded my computer to XP and the software will not load. It will only run on Win 95 or lower. Also the company that makes the software, is no longer in business, so no tech support (or I assume upgrades) is available.

German in Review 15 reviews Kimberly Sparks, Van Horn Vail
Heinle, 2003
The Best I've Ever Seen I studied linguistics in college and have studied and learned several languages to fluency. This is the best grammar review text I have ever used. It's straight forward, comprehensive, well laid out and unusually readable. The use of green ink to illustrate examples and highlight what's important is especially effective. I wish it were part of a series that included similar texts for French, ...

Heinle's Newbury House Dictionary of American English with Integrated Thesaurus: The Core of English ... 3 reviews
Heinle ELT, 2003
Best Dictionary I teach English as a Second Language, intermediate level. This is the best dictionary I have ever seen. The explanations are clear, in simple language, the thesaurus is great, and the sample sentences are easy to understand. Too often, in an all-English dictionary, the meaning of the word is in such complicated language that it is impossible to understand, even for native-born English ...

Against All Odds: Speaking Naturally with Idioms 3 reviews Marie Hutchison Eichler
Heinle ELT, 1991
It teaches hundreds of idioms in their everyday contexts. This is the most sophisticated idiom text I've seen in my 7 years teaching ESL. Ideal for the intermediate to advanced student, It includes the most-used phrasal verbs as well as expressions. The excercises are well designed matching, cloze, and conversation/role plays. What a pity if it's not re-published soon!

The Non-Stop Discussion Workbook: Problems for Intermediate and Advanced Students of English (Second Edition) 3 reviews George Rooks
Heinle ELT, 1988
The Non-Stop Discussion Workbook I am teaching English in China. Recently, I borrowed this book from a friend and it has been a lifesaver! Having to come up with topics was a chore but now... This book has each leson split up into four parts. First, students READ through the situation and then CONSIDER outcomes. Next they DISCUSS the questions. And if that hasn't filled up enough time, there is an EXTEND section that gives you ...

Everyday Chinese Handbook with Audio Pen 2 reviews Huang Hong
Heinle, 2007
Great invention! I recently purchased this product to learn to speak some basic Chinese before my trip to China and I'm amazed how easy and handy it is. My biggest problem with Mandarin is the pronunciation; This book comes with an audio pen that I can simply point at the text in the book and hear the correct pronunciation read aloud. I can play it over and over again without having to fumble with a CD or a ...

Der Weg zum Lesen 2 reviews Van Horn Vail, Kimberly Sparks

great for English speakers learning German This book has easy to read contemporary short stories. The stories are all written on just the right page, and on the left page are definitions for words that may be new or unfamiliar to the reader. The exercises after each story are also very useful to see if you understood the story and also to practice your German grammar skills. You definitely need to have had German in the past to be ...
