LA Capital: The Biography of Mexico City12 reviews
Jonathan Kandell

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1990

Seeking a copy
I am seeking a copy of La Capital to give to a family member. I hope you will urge the publisher to reprint it. An article in the Dallas Morning News noted that Governor Bush said it was a good read.

The Living Gita: The Complete Bhagavad Gita : A Commentary for Modern Readers4 reviews
Swami Satchidananda

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1990

The Living Gita for Living People
I have explored several versions of the Bhagavad Gita with commentaries, among them, that by William Q. Judge and the one provided by Paramahansa Yogananda. Previous to reading The Living Gita, I have been confused and haven't understood the ideas expressed. Sri Swami Satchidananda presents the text in easy-to-understand English, and offers concrete examples drawn from our everyday life to ...

Flower Power: Flower Remedies for Healing Body and Soul Through Herbalism, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, and ...5 reviews
Anne McIntyre

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1996

Marvelous sourcebook for healing with flowers
This book is very comprehensive, covering herbal remedies, essential oils, flower essences and homeopathy. The pictures of the flowers are beautiful and interesting to meditate on as one works with a remedy. It's very well written, appealing to both novices and experienced healers. I've learned so much from this book, and I continually turn to it for guidance and information.

The Third Ear: On Listening to the World2 reviews
Joachim-Ernst Berendt

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1992

Broadening perceptions via consious listening.
This is not a "How-to" book, but an incisive examination of the human aural capacity. The tenet of this work is that the human sense of hearing and thoughtful human interpretation serve to not only make sound meaningful but also an effective multi-dimensional tool of time and space. Tim Nevell has done a superb job of translation. I read this book back in 1994 and still remember it!

Lucius D. Clay: An American Life2 reviews
Jean Edward Smith

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1992

Five Stars for a Four Star American Hero
Lucius D. Clay has the distinction-and it is not one in which he took any pride-of being the first four star general in the history of the U.S. Army never to have seen any combat. One might think that the career of a uniformed bureaucrat might have little interest, but such is hardly the case. Clay was a key figure in getting the U.S. Army mobilized during the Second World War. As military ...

The Book of Est16 reviews
Luke Rhinehart

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1976

One of the Most Valuable Books
This book is the real deal. It's more hardcore than the Landmark Forum, but it does contain many of the distinctions that are at the core of what makes the Landmark Forum so effective. I am dismayed, however, by those reviews that use the context of a book review to opine on something they have no clue about. Landmark Education is a for-profit business; yes, it has programs to sell; no, it ...

The Romagnolis' Italian Fish Cookbook: Over 200 Irresistible Italian-Style Fish and Seafood Recipes2 reviews
Margaret Romagnoli, G. Franco Romagnoli

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

Another tried and true classic
If you're looking for a great Italian cookbook and love seafood, look no farther. The recipes are easy to follow and the notes give insight into what you're making. I've made a dozen or so dishes from this, and we've never been disappointed. The cacciucco (Tuscan Fish Stew) is to die for!

Preserving Porches1 review
Renee Kahn, Ellen Meagher

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1990

Excellent details, a lot of fun to read, lots of pictures.
This book not only provides the nitty gritty of keeping the porch on an old house from falling apart, it gives the history of porches, details about the lifestyles lived on porches in the 19th and 20th centuries, and lots of photos of porches. Look here for the historically appropriate railings for an early Victorian porch, or the furniture to put on your turn-of the century porch. Amusing ...

The Miner's Pale Children1 review
W. S. Merwin

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1994

Excellent, but not for ev'ryone...
This is a collection of short stories from a man whose "natural" form (or at least the one in which he's most prolific) is poetry. Thus, the writing is absolutely gorgeous and poetic. However, many readers (not I!) may be turned off by his obscure stories, which, altough they often deal with seemingly prosaic subjects, are quite esoteric. (For instance, one story involves a man who has an ...

The Spell of the Vienna Woods: Inspiration and Influence from Beethoven to Kafka (An Owl Book)1 review
Paul Hofmann

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

A view of Vienna from a native.
I happened to pick up this book in an ebay auction after two visits there. Paul Hoffman is a Vienna native and has written extensively about the city and his native land elsewhere. The book is unique in describing points of interest in the woods which surround Vienna on the south and west. Points of interest such as churches, monuments, restaurants, homes and palaces are described in the detail ...

Kennedy for the Defense: A Novel1 review
George V. Higgins

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

introduces Jerry Kennedy (first of 3 novels)
Kennedy for the Defense introduces Jerry Kennedy, the "best sleazy lawyer in Boston." Kennedy (not those Kennedy's) was a popular character who comes back in 2 more Higgins novels. This charcter may be "autobiographical" in an alternate universe where Higgins didn't work as a federal prosecutor. Here, Kennedy is in his 30's, comfortable, but still in a crummy office with waiting room ...

The Ultimate Alphabet13 reviews
Mike Wilks

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1992

Look and Learn
I first heard of Mike Wilks when I was nearly 16. We saw a video about him in my art class at school back in 1992. All the kids looked pretty impressed, I certainly was. The film showed the way Wilks produces his pictures. We saw his studio in the Pyrenees mountains, an obsessively clean, sparkling white room, where the artist works in complete silence. The video made it quite clear that Wilks is ...

Whatchagot Stew: A Memoir of an Idaho Childhood With Recipes and Commentaries3 reviews
Patricia McManus Gass

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1992

Funny book with real recipies
The book is typical McManus humor interlaced with good, bad, and ugly recipes. Always the recipes have some story and show what cooking was like when they used things like bacon grease to cook with. No doubt some of these recipes are heart stoppers but a fun book with varying types of things for campers and home cooks which have to be tried. Recipes range from simple to complex and are ...

Grandmaster Meets Chess Amateur (Batsford Chess Library)2 reviews
Steve Davis, David Norwood

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

A total delight
Norwood is a genius. This book is both the funniest chess book ever written (where else can you see a photo of a guy sitting on the toilet reading a chess book! I have done that so many times), and one of the most instructive beginner/intermediate manuals. The teaching method is by comparing the thought processes of an amateur and a GM, and it works beautifully. I love this book!
