Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (Henry Holt Big Books)50 reviews
Bill Martin

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 1992

Introducing animals and their sounds
I bought this book together with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" a couple of days ago, and my 3y.o. kid loves them both. My son helps me read out loud and is learning complicated words like "boa constrictor". It's very simple and great for introducing new animals and new words (such as "roaring" or "hissing"), we have a lot of fun reading it together every day.

In a Time of War: The Proud and Perilous Journey of West Point's Class of 20029 reviews
Bill Murphy

Henry Holt and Co., 2008

A must read - a heart-rending and gut-wrenching account
I have just completed Bill Murphy's moving book, "In a Time of War - The Proud and Perilous Journey of West Point's Class of 2002." The book is both gut-wrenching and heart-rending, yet it also leaves the reader inspired and proud of the young men and women who left West Point in the summer of 2002 to answer the call to fight the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. The title of the book is ...

Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners14 reviews
Laurie Keller

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2007

A Delight for All Ages!
The message is clear and presented in myriad ways, much humor and some really clever art work. Read each page slowly and don't miss a word or a picture. Your kids and grandkids will demand many repeats. And you will have as much fun as they do!

The Scrambled States of America64 reviews
Laurie Keller

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2002

A Show Worth Watching!
Okay, call me a sucker for any book that teaches while it entertains. This book excels at both. The premise is that, in the middle of the night, the state of New York woke up from a dream and shouted to all the other states, "HEY, EVERYONE--LET'S HAVE A TALENT SHOW!" And so they did. And what a rompus, good time was had by all. There's plenty of over-the-top humor, song ditties, and corny jokes ...

Brown Bear & Friends Board Book Gift Set15 reviews
Bill Martin, Eric Carle

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2007

Excellent little set, especially for the price!
The 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See' book was recommended to me by both my 4 year old daughter's speech therapist and her teacher. In town just this book alone was priced at 7.95. I found the set here on Amazon.com and the price was just too good to pass up! All three of these books are great for helping teach proper sentence structure and pronoun usage with I and you. Brown Bear features ...

Katie Loves the Kittens3 reviews
John Himmelman

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2008

A satisfying read that will have kids giggling
Katie is a clumsy floppy-eared dog whose owner Sara Ann has just brought home three kittens. According to the book it was, "the most exciting day in Katie's whole life." She's so happy that she can't help but howling, "AROOOOOOOOO!" As you may imagine, it frightens the kittens, and Sara Ann scolds her. Katie is determined to control her excitement around the kittens, but every time she gets close ...

This I Believe II: More Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women3 reviews
Jay Allison, Dan Gediman

Henry Holt and Co., 2008

Reaffirms the power of the story, the spoken word...what's not to love?
Once in a while an idea comes along that's so simple, so pure, as to demand: why hasn't anyone done this before? Accomplished freelance producer Jay Allison, of Falmouth, Massachusetts, struck upon reviving an mouldy-but-goldy: assemble articulate people to speak plainly, from the heart, about their deepest convictions. This is no mean feat speaking from an age of irony, where the best are ...
