The life of Benvenuto Cellini, (Books that have changed man's thinking)3 reviews
Benvenuto Cellini

Heron Books, 1968

Praise of the autobiography's excellent entertaining quality
This piece is an excellent portrayal of life during the Italian Renaissance, but more importantly, the book is purely entertaining. Benvenuto Cellini tells the story of his life in a vivid tale of kings and prostitutes, artists and dukes, soldiers and necromancers, all the while proclaiming himself the absolute protagonist of his world. Cellini's autobiography is filled to capacity with ...

Stories (The greatest masterpieces of Russian literature)17 reviews
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

Heron Books, 1969

perceptive and heartbreaking
Chekhov simply astonishes. "The Lady with the Little Dog," one of his most famous stories, is rendered splendidly by Pevar and Volokhonsky. I don't know of any other writer who captures the confusion, fear and excitement of romantic love as well as Chekhov does here. The last line is perfect.

Raymond Chandler

Heron Books, 1982

A Lyrical Must-Read
According to Wikipedia, FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (1940) was Raymond Chandler's second novel and created from three short stories--"The Man Who Liked Dogs" (1936), "Try the Girl" (1937), and "Mandarin's Jade" (1937). This makes a lot of sense to me, since Chandler's great creation, Philip Marlowe, seems more like a character from a short story than the deep and complex creation that a great novelist ...

Variety Of Men1 review
C. P. Snow

Heron Books, 1967

A book almost as remarkable as some of the people whose stories' it tells
In this book C.P. Snow writes portraits, or 'intellectual biographies' of Rutherford, the mathematician G. H. Hardy, H.G. Wells, Einstein, Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Robert Frost,Dag Hammarskjold, Stalin. The essays are given a special perspective by the fact that Snow knew personally many of his subjects. The most fascinating are those on Rutherford, Hardy, and Einstein. The essays are ...
