Magdalena's Song7 reviews
Pat Mattaini Mestern

High Country Publishers, 2003

Great story.
I've never before been so caught up in the lives of a book's characters. From beginning to end "Magdalena's Song" kept me entertained, intrigued and totally immersed in the story. The book made me want to pay a visit the area in which the story took place - Ontario, Canada. I've placed "Magdalena's Song" on my list of purchases for Christmas presents for everyone on my list.

Essence: This child ghost wants to tell you her story9 reviews
Glenn Woods

High Country Publishers, 2005

Excellent, a worthwhile read.
I ordered this book in August. Finished it in two days, I couldn't put it down. Luzette is amazing, her story is one of fear, love, loneliness, fear, courage and hope. I wish sometimes that I would have an encounter like the ones described within. Luzette is now one of my all time favorite characters, and this is without a doubt my favorite book.

Weather of the Heart: A Child's Journey Out of Revolutionary Russia7 reviews
Nora Lourie Percival

High Country Publishers, 2002

Wonderful lady;wonderful story
I happened upon Nora Percival in Valle Crucis, NC where she was signing her books. I feel so lucky to have personnally autographed copies of her books and a photo of me with her. Nora Percival is as captivating in person as she is in her story. "Weather of the Heart" is wildly educational, exciting and inspiring, a study in optomisism. I literally could not put it down: I carried it from room to ...

Getorix5 reviews

High Country Publishers, 2005

A thoroughly captivating and intimate story of a young man's struggle with identity and pride
Judith Geary's debut novel, Getorix: The Eagle And The Bull is set in the days of the Roman Republic (rather than the later Roman Empire) and is the story of a young Celt named Getorix. Following the adventurous life of Getorix which includes the depressing defeat of his father in a battle with the Romans, Getorix: The Eagle And The Bull deftly carries readers through a Celtic family struggles ...

Where The Water-Dogs Laughed: The Story of the Great Bear5 reviews
Charles F. Price

High Country Publishers, 2003

Storytelling at its best, raised to the level of myth and timelessness
With this novel Price brings to a close a remarkable multigenerational saga set in the mountains of North Carolina, a remote corner of the world in which the brutal aftermath of the Civil War is up-close-and-personal and seemingly without end. But what an end to this four-volume feast of the senses! Price engages the reader in the rawness of human nature and lets us rise to the level of myth ...

Dirty Deeds: A Meg Malloy Mystery2 reviews
Mark Terry

High Country Publishers, 2004

The Author Speaks!
I'm of course biased--I wrote the book, after all, but was recently told to go review it myself. I won't do that, though I will say that readers have told me that Dirty Deeds reminds them favorably of Sue Grafton and her Kinsey Millhone novels. High praise indeed. Here are some review highlights from other areas: From Ginny Stolicker's review in The Oakland Press: "Author Terry offers ...

Weave Me a Song3 reviews
Lila Hopkins

High Country Publishers, 2002

Wonderful
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love descriptive way that Mrs. Hopkins writes. She has created characters that I can not only almost see, but care about. Pax especially is a character I would like to see more of in later books. Having spent some time in the area where the book is set, it makes me want to do so again.

Windmaster's Bane11 reviews
Tom Deitz

High Country Publishers, 2006

Fantasy, with a little bit of Southern flavor.
I bought this little paperback while I was attending the University of Georgia back in the late 1980s. The book immediately captivated me. It's a mixture of fantasy, with a little bit of southern flavor. The story is about the adventures of young David Sullivan and his friends, all high school students living in a rural area of the Georgia mountains. Not your typical rural teen ager, David's ...

Mount Doomsday6 reviews
M.D, Donald A. Berman

High Country Publishers, 2005

Best book I've read in years
Don Berman has constructed a page turner on par with Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code." The weaving storyline and the suspense driven plot create an exhilarating journey for any reader. Berman has shed light on the gloomy possibility of a disaster stemming from both natural and man-made events. The recent disaster in New Orleans has demonstrated just how dead on Berman was in predicting the ...

Rachel's Story: A Southern Girl in Pre-Civil War Boston5 reviews

High Country Publishers, 2005

A wonderful surprise
Someone gave me this book for a present and I wasn't sure if I would like it but it turned out to be really wonderful and beautifully written. The story itself is interesting and full of warmth and intelligence. I read alot of history and think the book is very accurate for those early American times. The main pleasure though is in the characters--especially Rachel of course--since they are so ...

Monteith's Mountains: Death Stalks the Southern Appalachians5 reviews
Skip Brooks

High Country Publishers, 2002

Get in the serial killer's head
Brooks makes his villian/victim as scary as Hannibal Lector and, and if anything, more believable. Walker Tom Monteith is like a wild animal -- beautiful, but dangerous. The background of the southern Appalachians at the beginning of industrialization is almost as scary as the fictional serial killer plot -- and it's real. You understand why the characters act the way they do, but at the end you ...

Balanced Bowhunting II
Dave Holt

High Country Publishers, 2004

by Dave Holt. A completely revised, expanded and widely-hailed version of author Dave Holt's best-selling earlier book "Balanced Bowhunting", which has been out of print for some time. Now Dave has put his great book back in print in this much-bigger and updated version. Dave Holt is recognized for taking a common sense "what works" approach to the subject of bowhunting at a time when technology is rapidly changing this method of hunting. ...

Ann Chamberlin

fantastic historical fictional fantasy

Dear Mouse: A Tale of Love, Murder and Movie-Making in the Carolina Mountains10 reviews
Schuyler Kaufman

High Country Publishers, 2001

A Fun and Absorbing Read
Schuyler Kaufman writes in a way that makes me feel like I was a part of each scene. I felt as if I was actually there, watching and listening to everything that was happening (from being on the movie set with everyone to being alone with only his letters to his daughter for company). Many of the scenes seemed quite familiar to me. For example, in the hospital room when the three women trash one ...

All Roads Lead to Murder: A Case From the Notebooks of Pliny the Younger7 reviews
Albert A. Bell Jr., William Martin Johnson

High Country Publishers, 2002

great new Roman mystery
If a writer wants to introduce a new series in the somewhat crowded field of Roman mysteries, he'd better have a unique twist. Albert Bell has done that. Instead of fictional sleuths, he uses historical characters, Pliny the Younger and the historian Tacitus, in the first of what promises to be a fine series. Bell combines historical knowledge, witty writing, and a plot with just enough ...
