Tenacious7 reviews
Julian Stockwin

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2006

Kydd improves as Stockwyn does.
The earlier Kydd sagas took a bit of fortitude to get through. Clearly, Stockwyn was so invested on seamanship, he did not seem as committed to spinng a page turning yarn. However, as time has gone on, Stockwyn and his hero, Kydd have improved. In this most recent novel, Stockwyn takes us into the presence of Lord Horatio Nelson, through the eyes of Thomas Kydd. It is a fascinating and ...

Stranger in a Strange Land536 reviews
Robert A. Heinlein

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

A Valentine of a Novel
This true classic has meaning on so many levels; it is science fiction at its best. Interlocking storylines, characters with depth, and hidden messages abound. Many interpretations are possible, equally relevant. I read this book with my roommate as an undergraduate, then again and again, often with my children. Each reading leads to deeper understanding and new discoveries and perceptions. ...

Watching the English - The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour15 reviews
Kate Fox

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Hilarious and revealing observation of the English by a social anthropologist
Kate Fox, a social anthropologist and Co-Director of the Social Issues Research Centre in Oxford, who has lived in England, America, Ireland and France, takes a revealing look at the quirks and habits of the English people. Being very English herself, she holds a mirror up to the English national character and reveals the most famous traits as well as the most bizarre reflex reactions. She ...

Conversations with the Fat Girl56 reviews
Liza Palmer

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2006

Long live Maggie & company
I just finished reading Conversations With the Fat Girl today and plan to head out to the bookstore to buy Seeing Me Naked so I can tuck back in to Liza Palmer's excellent storytelling on this cold and snowy winter day. I loved this book! It's rich with characters I'd enjoy spending time with. Creating interesting secondary characters is difficult, but Ms. Palmer made it seem effortless. I ...

The Dark Tower: Song of Susannah: Song of Susannah Bk. 6686 reviews
Stephen King

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2006

What a ride.
In reading this entire series, I could write a 10 page essay. I will spare you all that. This book is a greating ending to the series. It will explain just about everything and even tug on your heart-strings. So be prepared for the final roller coaster that is The Dark Tower Series.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress231 reviews
Robert A. Heinlein

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Once in a Generation
Rarely -perhaps a for times in a generation - does a book come to be which explores the bedrock philosophy of economics & the nature of an economy, the arbitrary yet inevitable evolution of societal norms, the paths that humanity faces in our collective future, and so on... all in the format of a gripping and vastly creative novel. Heinlein's now-famous concept "TANSTAAFL" -"there 'aint no ...

September39 reviews
Rosamunde Pilcher

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Excellent novel, one of Pilcher's best
Septmeber is one of Pilcher's best novels, second only to her classic, The Shell Seekers. Her characters will stay with you, she has such a wonderful way of making them real, yet still likeable for the most part. Many of her other works are good as well but this one (along with Shell Seekers) is one that I happily reread on a regular basis because it's almost like saying hello to old friends.

Something Rotten65 reviews
Jasper Fforde

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

About as good as Harry Potter
This is the fourth book in the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. I liked all of them. They provide a similar kind of escapism, magic and drama as Harry Potter books, but there is also a lot of original humor.

The Search for Nefertiti14 reviews
Joann Fletcher

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Perimortem damage to both "younger lady" and teenaged boy
Good book in general, readable, and willing to challenge entrenched opinion. I don't know what Hawass' problem is, but from his past buffoonery, I don't really care either. For those who do, here's the "more daddy than mummy" link. http://www.cbc.ca/disclosure/archives/040113_nef/test.html The tone of the entire program hardly inspires confidence, and there's no reason to believe that mummy ...

Airs Above the Ground (Coronet Books)14 reviews
Mary Stewart

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 1991

She Paints Pictures
I have loved every novel written by Mary Stewart, some more than others. I read this one well over twenty years ago and many times since then. It is one of my many favorite of her books. In her books you get to travel; you feel as if you are really there. I have wanted to visit almost every place I have visited in her books. I too had pledged to see the Lippizaner stallions someday & I ...

Invitation to Provence11 reviews
Elizabeth Adler

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Wonderful!!!!
Elizabeth Adler has a lyrical and detailed way of writing so that the scenes vividly come alive off the pages to be experienced by all of the reader's senses. The tastes, scents, sounds of Provence are all so tangible!!! The product description on the back cover really sells the story short because it is about so much more than a wife becoming friends with her husband's mistress. It's about a ...

Winter Solstice156 reviews
Rosamunde Pilcher

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Wonderful
I reread this book every Christmas. Rosamunde Pilcher has a way of capturing the true spirit of the season and makes the weather that we endure enchanting. I love to sit by the fireplace and drink some cocoa (or more appropriately tea!) while I read it. It's truly a gift to have just a good, pleasant story to read around the holidays.

Return Engagement (Settling Accounts, Book 1)13 reviews
Harry Turtledove

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

This is a great read !!!
It's about time Turtledove sent the Confederacy into the U.S.A. to exact some much needed retribution for the unlikely defeat they put on them in the Great War books that he wrote. Now lets see how far the Southerners will take their punnishment to the U.S.

Quarterdeck11 reviews
Julian Stockwin

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Quaterdeck
I am an avid age of sail fan. I have read the entire Hornblower and bolitho series. The kydd series is the first I have found that starts forward and moves with the character to the quarterdeck. I have enjoyed the entire series thus far.

Write Away: One Novelist's Approach to Fiction and the Writing Life26 reviews
Elizabeth George

Hodder & Stoughton Paperbacks, 2005

Probably the best guide on the subject by a really talented author.
I've read many books on craft, some by supposed big name writers. Many have been disappointments. This one was finally what I'd been looking for, not merely a guide to what fiction is and how it works, but also how to put it all together. There is nothing vague about her approach to craft. And being a teacher as well as practitioner allows her to explain it with a clarity lacking in other guides. ...
